Create levels of interaction with the story; make sure that they can take something away from it regardless of how long they look at it for.
Know your target audience and know what they will respond and interact with.
Make sure you pay homage to the medium you choose through your design. (E.g. Make a webpage that embraces new technologies, don't just make a static page).
Know the the basic purpose of the story and the communication it is trying to get across.
Plan out the story and know where you want it to go, and where you want it to take people.

My favourite piece of work is the Clever Foxes posters (http://twentypercentextra.com/projects/lbb-clever-fox-posters/). I like the connotations associated of "an eye for design", as they are looking to recruit new designers. They are looking for clever individuals with a keen design sense who have an interest in politics; hence the hipster, sly look of the fox.
