self care resources and tips
so as long as i started being on tumblr i have been into recovery and spoonie blogs. i found a lot of wonderful resources here but now i think i am ready to give back to the community. here are some of the things that help get through life as a depressed, anxious adhd person with ptsd and some chronic pains.
!!! TW: mentions of depression, selfharm, food !!!
Apps
Finch
self-care app that is very flexible and forgiving!
you take care of a small cute penguin by taking care of yourself - it can be anything from just getting through the day to doing big things
loggin your mood in a non-bearing way, breathing excercises, journaling with promts and a lot of cute clothes for the birb included!
there is a free and a paid version but i had no issues with using only the free version - the differences are minimal!
i highly recommend this because it doesn't have a punishment system (like habitica, for example) and you can use it inconsistently without any worries. the main goal is to take care of yourself but even if you don't log it in - totally ok!
App for IOS
App for Android
Pokémon Smile
for all of my fellow neurodivergent people who struggle with brushing your teeth!
you help cleaning a dark pokemon by brushing your teeth AND you are doing it with a cute hat on!
you can complete a pokedex just like in a normal pokemon game
the app shows you how to brush your teeth thoroughly and has hints and a timer so you don't have to think about it
i personally use this on low spoons days and when i am too brain foggy to manage something like this. or on bad depression days, when i have no motivation because pokemon is my hyperfixation. i also recommended this app to a lot of younger neurodivergent kids and teens and they all found it super helpful!
App for IOS
App for Android
Calm harm
if you are struggling with selfharm it is a pretty good app for grounding yourself
you choose from many excercises depending of what helps you personally and then try to ground yourself
it is very customizable so I found it very easy to use even in public places (i.e. tasks like find colors are perfect for when you discreetly need to calm down)
it is also very bright and colorful AND you can choose your companions! i have animals because they are cute :)
App for IOS
App for Android
Real life tricks
10 minute cleaning
this is not a new method but still a very useful one
if you struggle with cleaning or motivation or lack of energy this is a very good one! especially if you have a combo of adhd and depression
so have you ever tried to clean "by areas"? it takes so much time, it is exhausting to even think about it, it is so...hard
that's how i feel so i started a very simple and spoonie-friendly method: if i have one extra spoon (or more) i clean for 10 minutes
whatever i can do in those 10 minutes - put two things away or clean the whole table - doesn't matter!
the main goal is to just spend 10 minutes tidying up
some days i can't do it and it's ok, some days i do more than 10 minutes - it is not about checkmarks but slowly making your living space more comfy over time
it helps with not stressing over "finishing" something, trying to perfectly clean every nook and cranny or even get hyperfixated on cleaning and get tired
snacks in breaks
important: this is not using food as a reward! if you struggle with ed or similar things, please be very careful with this method! food is not a reward, it is a neccesity
this is something my counsellor adviced me to do when i don't enjoy other things because of depression
i personally use it for when i get too much hyperfocus moments along with pomodoro tecnhique
if you have a favourite snack (or drink! preferably sweet) that can be divided into parts, use one part in every break you take while you are working
this method keeps you not hungry and/or hydrated, serves as a distraction because of the change of activity (chewing/drinking) and a new sensory stimuli
try to be mindful about it! savour the taste, imagine you are remi who is trying the cheese and strawberry together
you can do more in your break, of course! but if you are too hyperfocused and everything else seems boring snacks are a good way to prevent a massive burnout
so far this is all i wanted to share! if this helps a lot of people i will try to make more posts with my coping strategies because oh boy do i have a lot
Some apps that helped me with ADHD functioning/adulting.
TL;DR at the end!
EDIT: I still heavily struggle with keeping up with everything and it can be overwhelming, but I'm trying to figure it out and hoped that this could be some help for you guys.
I made it look overwhelming with all the colors, but I promise that they're a lot more accessible and easier to use than it seems. Edited for accessibility on August 6th.
📋 1. There's an app called TickTick
It has...
🍅 a built in POMODORO (with customisable timers, a strick mode with an app and site blocker, and a whitelist),
⏱️ a TIMER that you can set on specific tasks or subtasks,
📅 it has a CALENDAR,
📚 LISTS, TAGS, an Eisenhower-matrix, Kanban Board,
🤩 you can endlessly CUSTOMISE it with colors and emojis,
🚩 you can set PRIORITIES and set the lists to show the items SORTED BY date or priority or name or custom, etc.,
🏡 you can create SECTIONS within the lists too,
📮 you can set NOTIFICATIONS that POP UP ON YOUR SCREEN giving you the option to start a timer, postpone it for later, check it off, or skip it.
📈 You can create both SUBTASKS and checklists for your tasks, and it shows a tiny PIE CHART with the prescentage completed. It also shows how many days are left.
- With school tasks, I've listed everything I had to get done for the exam and added all the information and details, e.g. for all my readings, I included the link/where to find it in the library, the pages I had to read and the number of pages for quick access.
- To make it more fun/gamify the process, I added a little emoji (e.g. a waterdrop 💧 or a colored book 📙) before the name of the thing I have just completed and e.g. a bucket 🪣 or river 🌊 or plant 🌱 for the raindrops, or a bookshelf 🗃📚 emoji for the books, and as I complete an item, I collect the books/drops, etc. in there.
For example:
✉️💌📧📦🗞 >> 📬📮
🌧💧 >> ☔️ or 🌊 or 🪣 or 🌱 or 🪴
📕📙📔📗📘📖📚📒📑📜 >> 🗃🗄📚
🌟🌙🌠🪐🚀🌕☁️ >> 🌌
Etc.
🪣 2. Then there's Tody!
🧹 An app for HOUSEWORK,
🙌 it REJOICES when you complete a task,
💦 it puts little SPLASHES on the area where there are tasks to be done
🙆 you can set "EFFORT LEVEL",
✉️ it also sends you a NOTIFICATION
and meassures how dirty one thing might be based on the last time you cleaned it.
You can RESET it.
🍽 3. Then there's WonderFridge!
It's an app to keep track of the CONTENT of your fridge and pantry, it has plenty of beautiful ILLUSTRATIONS for every sort of drink or food. It keeps track of the EXPIRATION DATES of foods and sends you NOTIFICATIONS so you can eat/use them up before they go wrong.
🕑 4. Then there's Boosted!
Boosted is a very SIMPLE app, originally created to MEASURE the time spent on different projects and their subtasks. I personally use it to break down tasks in the moment and do a speed run doing them as fast as I can. (Especially when I'm about to hit a deadline.)
🐦 5. Then there's Finch!
Finch is an adorable SELF-CARE app in which
you hatch a LITTLE BIRB and as you do your tasks, you give them ENERGY to go, explore and every day come home with a new thing explored, CHAT with you about it and GROW a little.
💡It has TASK SUGGESTIONS,
📓 a built in JOURNAL with or without prompts,
❤️🩹 breathing and grounding exercises, an S.O.S. mental first aid box,
⏲️ timers, reminders, lovely messages,
🤗 acts of kindness, and many more.
You can also group your tasks into JOURNEYS.
🙂 6. Then there's Daylio!
Daylio is a very SIMPLE JOURNAL/DIARY to KEEP TRACK OF THE DAYS ('cause I rarely remember what happended yesterday or which day did something happen.) You can set up little BUTTONS for activites, moods, symptoms, the weather, or anything you fancy and just tap over the ones that fit the day. You can also freely ad text, photos, or create a sound entry.
It's fully customisable (even the colors and moods) and makes you plentiful of different STATISTICS so you can check long term tendencies. It's super useful for monitoring mental health.
⏳️ 7. There's also Tiimo
Tiimo was developed by and keeping in mind the needs of neurodivergent people. In it you can set up routines and tasks with their duration and an emoji (they have a beautifully colored emoji set!). You can schedule your tasks at a specific time or set them "to do anytime" and set them to repetition. Once the scheduled time comes you get notified and the app starts a visual timer (even if you don't start the task...) and once done, you can check it off.
TL;DR
TickTick is a cool to-do app where you can make colorful lists, tag tasks and it helps you sort them by priority. Tody is a chores app that measures the dirtiness and is happy for you when you complete a task. Wonderfridge is an app where you can keep track of your food and their expiration dates and has nice icons. Finch is an adorable self-care app where a little bird grows with you and that suggests you self-care activities. It is a 100% mental illness/disability/neurodivergency friendly. Boosted helps you break down tasks and measures time. Daylio is a low-effort diary to keep track of the days, especially useful if you have memory issues. It makes statistics too so you can see how a thing might affect your mood. And Tiimo, a visual timer for tasks and routines.
-------
I hope I could help some!
If I made any typos, let me know!
*friendly salutes* Until next time! 🫡

These seems epic!!
Honestly my best advice for any trans woman coming here from Twitter is to obviously install shinigami eyes so that you can tell who's a crypto terf or whatever. But also to genuinely just search terf and radfem keywords and just go down the list and block like 300 people.
And then to take that a step further (because no amount of blocking is enough unfortunately) when they start interacting with your content, don't just block that person, take the time to go through their blog and block who they reblog from. Then if you notice one name popping up in the notes more than usual, go to that person's blog and do the same thing.
Deny then access. Don't prune the weeds, scorch the earth.
Boosting this for all the new reddit girlies
Also? We watch out for each other here. My moots (and even a few of my random followers) will let me know if I’ve missed a name because Shinigami Eyes doesn’t work on mobile. It is ALWAYS okay to tell someone you follow “heyo this post turned up red.” 99.9% of the time you’re going to get some variation on a curse word followed by them deleting the post and thanking you, and the remaining .01% of the time you’ve found a new name for your block list.
This this this this this. Some folks like me tumbl almost exclusively mobile and don’t have shingami eyes via the app.
^^^^ i use mobile please please tell me if i accidentally reblog some terf shit !!!!!

Autistic people of driving age, do you drive?
I drive regularly
I drive rarely
I've only driven as a last resort
I know how to drive but I don't
I don't know how to drive
Not autistic / See results
"Autism be damned by boy can-" Wait no hold up. Why are we damning autism. I love autism. Autism be blessed.
Wishing all my mutuals a very blessed autism.
Autistic Person rates Autistic Characters in Media
In this post, I will be rating some autistic characters in media (specifically TV and movies) based on how well represented I feel by them as an autistic person. Keep in mind that this is thus a subjective list since autism is very individual and no two autistic people will have the same experience or opinions. I would also like to add that I am what would be considered a Low Support Needs autistic person, seen that I can generally live without too much assistance or accommodations, which means that my experience is going to not be relatable to autistic people with higher support needs than mine. On that note, also please keep in mind that “low functioning” and “high functioning” are harmful labels and that they are not the same as “low support needs” and “high support needs”. Also, obviously, since this is subjective, I am not saying that nobody else on the spectrum can’t like or relate to any of these characters; this is my own opinion, not a purely objective rating. Finally, whilst I will be rating these characters on a scale of 1 (worst) to 6 (best), I will not be ranking them in this post.
This list includes characters that are explicitly named to be autistic or that are widely accepted to be autistic, for example because the creators or actors confirmed it in retrospect or because the canon very strongly implies it and the creators have not spoken out in denial of it. Also I can obviously only rate the media I have actually seen so if your favourites aren't on this list, this is why.
CONTENT WARNINGS THAT APPLY: mentions of antisemitism (briefly), mentions of Autism Speaks, mentions of ableism, mentions of an autistic male character acting creepily towards women.
I will be signalling Pros/positive points with a + sign and Cons/negative points with a – sign.
Dr. Isidore Latham (Ato Essandoh) – Chicago Med (2/6)
- “curing autism” theme in the episodes centric on his personal experiences
- usage of the outdated and antisemitic term “Aspergers” over “Autism” (this is especially harmful considering Dr. Latham is Jewish)
+ Black autistic representation (which is rare seen that most autistic characters tend to be White) and Jewish autistic representation
+ whilst Dr. Latham is shown to not be the most social man and to be very direct, he isn’t outright rude or unprofessional
- as far as I could find out online, the actor is allistic (it is always better to cast a disabled actor for a disabled role)
Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) – The Good Doctor (0/6)
- the show collaborates with Autism Speaks, who are known to be a hate group not actually looking to help or listen to autistic people
- allistic actor
- extremely stereotypical in its portrayal (extremely antisocial, no friends, always literal, no social awareness – even though autistic people struggle with allistic tone patterns, usually they would be able to pick up at least somewhat what other people consider rude behaviour and would try to avoid it, something Shaun never seems to do)
- transphobia from the one autistic character, implying directly that autistic people are unable to understand the concept of a transgender identity (when in truth, studies show that many people on the spectrum also often identify as not on the gender binary or as transgender)
- Autistic Savant trope (portraying autistic people as geniuses when in fact, less than 5% of all autistic people are a Savant and even if we are very interested in a topic such as medicine, we still need to learn and study just as allistic people)
Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi) – The Community (4/6)
+ writer of the series is on the spectrum
+ PoC autistic representation
+ whilst not clearly being labelled as autistic, the character is recognizable as an autistic person without hitting all the stereotypical tropes such as being antisocial, never joking, always being literal or being a “genius” without ever studying etc. - allistic actor
- whilst generally not labelling a character as autistic is not a bad thing, it makes it harder for autistic people to definitely say “this character is autistic”, meaning that allistics can ignore the coding if they wish to cling to their own, often stereotyped idea of what autism “looks like”
Dr. Alfred Jones (Ewan McGregor) – Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (3/6)
- allistic actor
- stereotypical, but not as badly as other portrayals
+ avoids the trope of autistic people not having emotions, instead showing Alfred’s struggle expressing and understanding tone and emotions
+ generally good portrayal of a special interest being made part of the life via the job (salmon and fly fishing)
Music Gamble (Maddie Ziegler) – Music (0/6)
- creator Sia has openly shown ableist behaviour, putting down autistic people, not listening to autistic voices and criticism etc.
- allistic actress
- collaboration with Autism Speaks
- extremely stereotypical portrayal and infantalization of autistic nonverbal people
- harmful techniques such as restraining being shown on screen
- graphic meltdown scenes being shown
Sam Gardner (Keir Gilchrist) – Atypical (1/6)
- allistic actor
- in-universe infantilization of autistic people (via Mother Elsa)
- having the autistic character act dangerously, for example locking someone in the closet because they annoy him or borderline predatorily pursuing his therapist, sheds a harmful light on autistic people
- as far as is known, no autistic people were included in the production or writing process
- many instances show autistic-related habits or traits, for example wearing noise cancelling headphones, but frame it in a way that the audience is supposed to find it funny or laugh at the protagonist
- instead of making Sam sympathetic, he is largely just shown to make everyone around him uncomfortable
+ the ongoing portrayal of Sam’s special interest is generally well-done
- an ongoing theme is Sam’s girlfriend Paige restricting his info-dumping and by extension his special interest (something autistic people get active joy from) to three “dumps” a day so he can act “more normal” – this might teach allistic viewers that this is something they can do to their autistic friends
Sara Eriksson (Frida Argento) – Young Royals (5/6)
- usage of “Aspergers” both in the show and by the actress
+ actually autistic actress
+ autistic traits like mirroring, struggling with social context or tone and directness/bluntness as well as a special interest (horses) are shown whilst tropes like Sara being entirely unempathetic, rude and antisocial being avoided
Isadora Smackle (Ceci Balagot) and Farkle Minkus (Corey Fogelmanis) – Girl meets World (2/6)
- usage of “Aspergers”
- the original title of the episode centric on autism was “Girl Meets Normal”, implying autism is something abnormal, which is a potentially very harmful rhetoric
- autism is shown as something bad, with Farkle’s friends actively trying to fight over him being not autistic, insisting he is “normal”, generally treating autism as something they don’t want their friend to be associated with – a very harmful take in a show for kids and young teens
+ Smackle is a major, long-term autistic character rather than a One Episode throwaway character, even though she is generally quite stereotypical (but given that this show generally has every character act over the top and often fitting in specific categories this is not as bad, it just makes her fit in the framework of the show; she is not the only one who is largely stereotypically portrayed)
+ actor Ceci Balagot is themselves autistic (according to their twitter that is)
Renee (Madison Bandy) – Loop (6/6)
+ PoC nonverbal autistic character portrayed by a nonverbal autistic voice actress
+ in production, an active effort was made to make the actress feel comfortable, so that her experience working on the film would be accommodating and positive rather than unnessicarily stressful
+ generally very well-done portrayal of both sensory seeking and sensory overstimulated behaviour and the experience as an autistic person
Matilda (Kayla Cromer), Nicholas (Josh Thomas) and Drea (Lillian Carrier) – Everything is gonna be okay (6/6)
+ autistic actors playing autistic characters and autistic writer
+ very realistic portrayal of autism and how it differs in different people, as well as how it can affect interpersonal relationships (also having the sister mention that she thought she understood autism as a whole but later realized she only understood her sister's autism specifically because it is so individual)
+ realistic portrayal of sensory overload, stimming, communication between different autistic people etc.
+ queer autistic people – gay and asexual autistic main characters
+ autistic people joking, showing emotions, humour without the autistic people being the butt of the joke
+ empathetic portrayal of an adult realizing they might be on the spectrum and the denial and questioning that comes with that
+ portrayals of autistic special interests and autistic joy
Quinni (Chloé Hayden) – Heartbreak High (5.5/6)
+ autistic actress playing an autistic character
+ autistic queer representation
+ themes of ableism are included but dealt with sensitively and without making the ableism seem harmless
+ realistic portrayal of stimming, struggle with abrupt change of plans, overstimulation, meltdowns, autistic joy, info dumping etc.
+ autistic character having genuine friendships and friends who support her and know her sensory needs etc.
- because it is set in high school, this is a very specific group being represented so it is possible that the largest part of the autistic community won’t see themselves completely accurately portrayed, but chances are they can relate to Quinni nonetheless at least in aspects.
hey all - I’m planning out my PhD application (to submit Fall 2024) and know I have to do a “scholarly writing sample” do you think a meta analysis would be a good idea for that? aghh this is intimidating.
THIS!!
But also planner DOES help me but only for like assignments and such and it took a lot to create a system that allows me successfully use it. Which mostly includes: highlighters, colored pens, having it out and open when doing my HW.

Reasons I like subtitles:
1. I can see how people’s names and the cities and the countries are spelled.
2. I don’t miss any words, so everything they say makes sense.
3. I get to know what background noises and conversations are.
4. The descriptions of the noises people make are freaking awesome. Ex: splutter, grunt, chuckles.
5. I can see who says what.
6. I don’t have to have the volume super loud so I can hear the dialogue, and I don’t blow my eardrums out because the ambient noises and music is SO FREAKING LOUD.
I freaking love subtitles.
Have you ever met a non-speaking autistic person before? The lack or absence of actual words physically spoken does not reflect the level of sentience a person possesses. Learn how to “listen” better.
I love the insight this dude provides 🖤
Hello! I was hoping to request the help of some of you all!
I am doing a research study for one of my college classes on the benefits of mentorship amongst neurodiverse K-12 students. I would appreciate it if those who meet the below parameters and have the time and spoons would take the survey. It shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes.
Parameters:
18-35years old
Neurodiverse (self-diagnosis is accepted)
Had a mentor (formal or informal) during K-12
If you know of anyone who would fit these parameters please send them this survey as well! Thank you!
https://bsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0BVkRNhVicEkqma
PLEASE! If you are neurodivergent in ANY WAY -including- self diagnosed PLEASE do this survey! It shouldn’t take more than 10min of your time!!
With April almost being here… I just want to make sure it’s clear that:
This blog does not support Autism Speaks.
Please listen to the voices of autistic people.

Plounce on twitter
Just a reminder since they're making it harder to get diagnosed with autism soon, if tools made for either autistic or ADHD people help you: use them. That simple. Don't worry about taking away resources because most of the time if more people are using a thing the more accessible and normalized it becomes
This still blows my mind
I will happily delete this if I’m derailing or taking away from the original message (initially I put this in the tags, but a friend asked me to reblog as text)
If you don't want to pursue an autism or adhd diagnosis and you have access to a doctor or therapist you can get them to write you a note attesting to a symptom of your neurodivergence (rather than naming the condition itself) and stating the need for accommodation.
It's something my therapist told me about when we were still working in offices. I have sensory processing issues and on multiple occasions the noise in my office was so bad I broke the skin on my hand clenching my fist.
This work-around of course won't fix structural ableism and relies on you having access to a doctor/therapist who actually gives a crap, so still might only help a couple of folks.
Thats a good add on
