No but listen!!! I think this adaptation with those two captured the very essence of the play.
It's not canon, they're not the center of attention in the original play.. except they very much are.
R&J is a tragedy about hatred. And what screams tragedy more than two kids hating each other for no reason but family feud they're not even directly part of, until it kills them both.
The story of Romeo & Juliet is as much about Tybalt and Mercutio as it is about Romeo & Juliet. And yeah, you can squint and see queer undertones to it, and you can not, both work and both reach the same conclusion. Hatred killed the youth of Verona.
Tom and John did a perfect portrayal of that. They have incredible dynamic and managed to capture and represent the idea better than any adaptation that used those two complicated characters as probs to get to the main event. THEY ARE THE MAIN EVENT.
I'd say the Italian version of the musical also got very close to that, especially with keeping Tybalt's motive to pure family feud and not loving Juliet. But honestly, the dynamic between John and Tom was just perfect.
