Even when it feels like everything is going wrong, many positive things are still happening around the world:
🇯🇵: Scientists in Japan achieved a true breakthrough: for the first time in history, they removed an extra chromosome associated with Down syndrome directly from human cells.
👁️🤓: By the end of 2026, eye drops that temporarily improve near vision for up to 10 hours are expected to reach the market. They work by reducing pupil size, increasing depth of focus, and helping people read without glasses during the day.
🇯🇵🛜: Researchers in Japan set a world record for data transmission speed, reaching 1.02 petabits per second (more than 1 million Gbps).
🧑🔬: Scientists are creating living structures made of beta cells that respond to glucose levels and could completely replace daily insulin injections. One of the most promising advances against type 1 diabetes.
👁️: For the first time in history, a blind patient successfully received a cornea grown from human cells and printed using a specialized 3D bioprinter, restoring their vision.
🇧🇷💊: Brazilian scientists developed a vaccine that blocks the effects of crack and cocaine. The substance creates a barrier in the bloodstream that prevents the drug from reaching the brain, helping fight addiction. The medication, called Calixcoca, is being developed by researchers at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil.
🇫🇷🫀: France introduced the Carmat artificial heart, an innovative device capable of transforming the future of transplants. It runs on external batteries and gives patients more mobility, independence, and a real chance of prolonged survival.
🇰🇷🚶: In highly crowded urban areas and transportation hubs in South Korea, such as Seoul, there are special pedestrian lanes designed to organize the flow of people, reduce stress and rushing, and prevent collisions between pede
Google just made AI Mode the default for global Search. The biggest change to how humans find information in 25 years. What actually shipped at Google I/O on May 19:
The search box is now an AI conversation tool. It expands as you type, accepts text, images, files, videos, and Chrome tabs as inputs. Search results now generate custom dashboards, trackers, and mini apps inside the page. The answer stays on Google. Search agents now monitor the internet 24 hours a day in the background and send you what they decide is important. AI Mode is now powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash and rolled out in nearly 200 countries and 98 languages with no subscription required. AI Mode is at over one billion monthly users. That number doubled last quarter.
Since AI Overviews launched, small websites have already lost 60 percent of their referral traffic. This update is the next 30 percent. The skill the internet trained you in for 25 years was compare, verify, decide. The new system replaces all three with one AI answer you cannot fact-check without leaving the page. If you build a business online, your pipeline just changed. If you read the internet to stay informed, your truth filter just changed. Tag one person who still thinks Google traffic is coming back. Billionaires lie. All the time.
WASHINGTON—In the latest of a series of escalations in President Donald Trump’s highly publicized war on “woke,” the U.S. Department of Justice reportedly removed all mentions of justice from its website Friday. The purge follows a directive from the DOJ last week to roll back pro-justice programs and delete thousands of webpages that contained banned words, including “fairness,” “integrity,” “due process,” and “honor.”

“Why not bring the family?”
But that’s like something an ICE agent would say if he wanted to arrest your entire family in one go?
New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has collected $9m (£6.6m) in unpaid fines from Amazon, which has been violating the city's clean air laws by leaving engines running on its parked vehicles.
His office announced the recovery of the money last week, days after Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos appeared to criticise Mamdani’s push to tax the rich in order to fund education.
“Amazon is worth $2tn. Yet it did not deign to pay the millions of dollars it racked up in unpaid fines as its trucks illegally polluted our air and forced New Yorkers to breathe in their exhaust,” Mamdani said in a statement.
“We are going to collect every dollar they owe the people of this city.”
Lisa F Garcia, commissioner of the city’s Department of Environmental Protection, said: “I applaud Mayor Mamdani and the Department of Finance for securing more than $9m in illegal idling fines from Amazon, which has long been among the top worst idling offenders in the city.”
In an interview with broadcaster CNBC last week, Bezos criticised New York’s public education system and said that even doubling his taxes would not help local teachers.
“If we ran Amazon the way New York City runs their school system, your packages would take six weeks to arrive,” he said.
Mamdani’s administration has prioritised enforcing existing laws against large companies as part of a bid to rein in corporate power and improve public finances. Earlier this month, his office said it had secured a record-breaking $31m (£22.9m) in penalties against negligent landlords.
It's a predictable cycle.
Trump gets frustrated by his failure in the Iran war.
Trump threatens Iran with annihilation, war crimes, genocide, etc.
Trump calls off Armageddon citing progress in negotiations or favors granted to somebody in the international community.
Repeats cycle when necessary.
Seriously, even in Japan people know all about TACO.

Mammoth Cave Data Centre
There are plans to put a 1000 acre data center in Kentucky.
This isn’t just any space they're planning either, it’s planned for the exit of Mammoth Cave National Park. The world’s longest cave systems, with more than 400 miles explored, diverse unique and protected wildlife and it's one of the oldest tour attractions in North America.
As of Monday 18th May, Cave City leaders voted four- to-one, approving the first of two required readings of a moratorium that would block data center permit applications for one year. Now there is a year's long moratorium in process. Be loud, make noise, get more and more Cave City people to show up to town hall meetings than there are already (which is a good number).
The cave network began forming roughly 330 million years ago. Indigenous people began exploring and mining minerals from the cave's dark depths at least 5,000 years ago.
Because the cave is pitch-black, it is home to uniquely adapted eyeless and colorless creatures, including the Kentucky cave shrimp and the southern cavefish.
This data centre also affects one most biologically diverse water systems in America, The Green River, which flows into the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and supports wildlife and millions of people with drinking water and farming.
There is also concern that the lack of power and surface water, as well as vibrations over the sinkhole plain makes this area even more dangerous, yet they're desperately pushing for it.
What about Mammoth Caves dark sky certification? Data centers are bright and loud. This would completely ruin the brilliant stargazing opportunities there.
The data centre will harm and potentially kill the bats that live in that cave which are essential to the ecosystem and protected under the endangered species act, all bats are federally protected.
For a video on how dangerous and disruptive sound from these data centres can be check out this video from Benn Jordan here.
