So far things are going somewhat according to canon...

Though Chris is currently moping over Ada because Leon got there first.

It's that time of month again, but there isn't much movement for any of the Obey Me games this time around.

Obey Me holds steady at $50k.

Nightbringer holds steady at $30k.

Ido climbs a little to $50k.

These are unfortunately all firmly in dead game territory, but the original game's performance is still notable considering how many years it has now been running with no new content.

Ido could definitely have done worse, I half expected it to miss the charts entirely this month, but it has rallied a little. The April revenue may be affected however by the game being unavailable at the beginning of the month, and by the announcement of another new game...

[Nb Creek & River is an outsourcing company, so it's curious that the changeover caused such a kerfuffle.]

March was not a big hitting month for the majority of the usual players, however Twisted Wonderland quintupled its revenue in Japan, meaning the game in total pulled in over $8 million.

I don't have a huge amount to say about this one, so my apologies to my inbox asking me about it, I'm just kinda ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and don't wanna rain on anyone's parade!

I'll be very happy if it's good, but at this point I've long learned not to get my hopes up, and tbh I'm not terribly impressed that they ran a whole crowdfunder for a game with barely any content and have now announced yet another brand new game soooo. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah that is a really solid point honestly, when there are teams with way less funding and industry connections putting out some amazing games.

Sassy Chap Games came out swinging with Date Everything, Teary Hand Studio made waves with And Roger, Fields of Mistria is the debut of another indie dev, Touchstarved is still in development but has a ton of excitement in my discord server for it, and the list goes on.

Not to mention smaller hits from equally small teams...

Solmare meanwhile was in the same spheres as Mihoyo and Papergames but with more experience in gacha and romance game development.

I think unfortunately the truth of the matter is that Solmare decided to exit gaming as a field entirely. Hence the shutdown of their other titles, and the offloading of Ido to another company not well known in the industry.

The fact that Solmare is a rich company, and is owned by a billions-making company in turn, means that making a few million a month is arguably not worth it. Not that OM is making that, but I'd wager that's the potential if it was properly explored, to earn around 2 mill a month.

And while that's a lot in terms of otome games, it's not a lot in a portfolio dealing with hundreds of millions.

I make emotes in my spare time, and that one is from my Obey Me Pride pack I made for my discord server. So I'd guess it's because it's designed to be that size!

It's that time of month again that nobody looks forward to, revenue time ಥ_ಥ

February is a hard month across gacha games as a whole, for obvious reasons given the end of the fiscal year.

Despite that, some otome/joseimuke games did show increases over their January stats - Lovebrush, Mr Love and Tears of Themis are in the green, and indications are that the erolabs contingent did well too.

As for Obey Me though... it's not great.

OM Ido is down to just $30k after two months, matching the revenue of Nightbringer, a game that hasn't been updated in over a year.

That is a massive 81% decrease in two months - Nightbringer did not decline that fast by a LONG way.

Weirdly, this is also the first time in over a year that the original game has also seen a decrease in revenue rather than holding steady. It is still the most successful of the three this month (a fact that has always been true throughout this series), but it seems not only has Ido failed to capitalise on the success of the original, it may even be contributing to killing it ಠ_ಠ

Reasons for Ido seeing further revenue loss? I mean, I don't think it's that much of a puzzler really. Game breaking bugs. People locked out of their accounts. A half-hearted chapter 2 split in two parts. An event with cards that aren't even animated. And then every other criticism of this game that has already been put forth.

The numbers back up the fan disappointment.

Honestly, what makes me actually sad is seeing the og game start to fall now as well. It is the only one still in non-cancellation numbers, despite being the one that Solmare abandoned first.

I'm still playing, but I haven't read the valentines event yet.

I think what enthusiasm I had was just wiped out entirely by the lackluster (half!) Chapter 2 update, plus the ongoing refusal to address the game-breaking bug that has many players locked out of their accounts.

Up till Feast of the Fallen I was still pretty into gathering all the lore and such, and my love for the overall series was kicking in but now? I dunno.

It feels like the fandom enthusiasm has waned as well.

I think chapter 2 just confirmed how short these episodes are and how little effort has been put into this game. There's no main route, the characters are underwritten in specific cases (alcoholic Mammon, feet obsessed Belphie, Beel being moved miles away...) and even in the more fitting moments, they're so short and shallow, with MC having even less agency than before.

Nightbringer wasn't my cup of tea plot wise, but it didn't feel like a straight up cash grab - greedy, yes, but they were trying out new things, however misguided they turned out to be. And I wish of course that they'd just put that effort into the original game which remains the only successful one to this day with HUGE potential.

Ido is very much just a cash grab.

The crowdfunding proved how loyal the fandom was, how much any new game would be given every chance to succeed.

I got this card pretty easily for once, and used my Star Tears to get the second copy.

Cute enough, but my fave part is this expression part way through the last one - it's very Mammon!

But I think it's important to note that this is yet another gacha/event update without any sign or acknowledgement of the game-breaking bug that still has MANY players locked out of their accounts - including players who contributed to the crowdfunding for the game, and who have spent irl money in-game.

Sure! Ferinsy over on r/gachagaming does the hard work every month of compiling revenue stats for "Husbando & female-oriented version" gacha games. I've my own records for a few years as well, because I'm a huge nerd ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Gacha games by nature are some of the biggest earners on mobile across genres, so while these games differ by mechanics, genre, story etc, they are all broadly aimed at the same audience, and on mobile platforms represent the bigger hitters.

(Other gacha like Genshin, Arknights, Uma Musume etc are listed in other charts elsewhere - aside from LaDS and Twst, most of the other ones here don't make the overall charts.)

The games I have as my benchmarks for comparison are, in declining order of revenue, these:

Love and Deepspace - the top tier

Twisted Wonderland - top non LaDS game

Lovebrush Chronicles - steady earner

Mr Love: Queen's Choice - steady earner

Tears of Themis - once on par with OM

Ikeman Villain - where OM should be at least

NU Carnival - the censored version

What In Hell is Bad - censored versions

Other than one version of censored WHB, all out perform every OM game. But when I first started tracking OM figures, Obey Me was earning more than Ikeman Villain does now, and outperforming Tears of Themis which has since skyrocketed after committing to a more adult tone.

(NU Carnival and WHB both make more money than this, but non-censored versions don't give revenue figures.)

As a snapshot, here are my figures for the last five months.

Green is stable or increased revenue on previous month, red is a loss.

As you can see, losses in January are typical (nobody has money!), and gacha games as a rule do fluctuate a lot in revenue depending on banner etc.

That's why I also track yearly averages.

Funnily enough, the original Obey Me is the most stable game in revenue across my stats, and has been since its heyday. It decreased to its current figure very slowly, and didn't fluctuate much when popular.

That is to say, it was a standout performer with huge potential for growth - it could easily have reached the same figures as Twisted Wonderland with the right investment in artists and writers, especially with the anime reception and the demand for merch that has never really been met.

As I mentioned last month, one month of stats doesn't tell us much though the first month debut can give an indication if taken with a grain of salt.

The original Obey Me launched at $150k and swiftly built to a regular $500k per month in its first year.

Nightbringer launched at $450k but swiftly dropped to $180k per month at its peak.

And OM Ido launched in December at $160k - disappointing compared to Nightbringer, but given it was also part-kickstarted (unnecessarily), there was some leeway.

In the second month however, OM Ido has fallen to $70k, very much at the bottom of the otome/joseimuke charts.

This is a very similar drop to Nightbringer but with small numbers to begin with.

Nightbringer itself also continues to decline with $30k in January, while the original game refuses to quit and maintains its steady $60k a month.

Yup, that is correct - Ido made only $10k more than the original game, a game that has had no new content in years.

If that ain't telling I don't know what is!

The drop off between month one and two is unfortunately entirely expected when looking at feedback and experience of the game from the playerbase.

Many players are locked out of their game due to an unfixed and unexplained bug. Some remain locked out from a bug that was there at launch(!!).

There has been a story update and two event updates since launch, but these bugs remain.

The locked out players include those who have contributed to the crowfunders, and those who have spent hundreds in irl money in-game.

No explanation or notice regarding the game-breaking bug has been given, and there are no known shared triggers (it occurs across device, OS, and even when the game is closed).

Why would anyone spend money on a game that may suddenly lock them out of everything they've worked on?

And again, this was marketed as a game, not a lifestyle app. But even for the latter category, Ido does not stack up well at all.

I'm lowkey reluctant to even post my thoughts on the Chapter 2 stuff I've read, when I have friends who cannot get into their accounts at all.

No wonder the buzz has died down ಠ_ಠ

Just a reminder that if you haven't already, it is very important to link your account in game. You can do this in the main Menu on the top right of the Home screen:

This is in case you change devices and need to get your account back, orrrrr in the case of game-breaking bugs...

I'd also recommend grabbing your User ID number and keeping it somewhere safe. You can find this by tapping on the start screen in the top left corner or by going to Options in the Menu next to Link Account, and it will be listed there under the name and nickname you picked for the game.

When I say game-breaking bugs, unfortunately there are several. The calendar bug that locked people out of their accounts has still kept many locked out. Time zone changes can lock the game even if you haven't changed your time zone(!).

And most importantly, a game-breaking bug can appear for no known reason that completely locks your account:

In such cases, I'd advise following the official advice - go to Support in that same above Menu and follow the steps.

If you haven't linked your account, the official advice is to contact them with info and they'll try to help.

Unfortunately, I do know of several people who have done all of the above and still have no access to their account.

This includes people who have spent irl money on the game ಥ_ಥ

Which is yet another reason I really cannot recommend spending money on Obey Me Ido, as there is zero guarantee you will get to keep what you buy.

Additionally, there have been several updates since these bugs were made known - some of the bugs were present at launch.

This is not acceptable for an app that has real money purchases available, and just not acceptable for any app or game tbh.

Fixes should always take priority over updates, especially when people are completely losing access.
