You Are Enough

Three words that I think everyone deserves to hear. Three words that can make such a large impact on the people around you.

Noelle, to me, shows what a truly tragic character is supposed to look like in a very scary and realistic light. Trapped in her routines, faced with trauma after trauma every single day of her life, she longs for freedom. Freedom from the chains of grief that come with her father being ill. Freedom from the constant fear of being something her mother never wanted her to be and hiding her identity and constantly being shot down because of it. Freedom from the anguish and sadness of losing her older sister. For a long time, she keeps her head down and simply takes hit after hit. She starts finding comfort in horror while similarly feeling that, if she were to die, she would finally be free from her torment. And that is where the Weird Route in chapter 5 truly takes us.

The Weird Route takes us on a journey through Noelle's experience with feeling power, something she's never had before. And with that, she slowly starts realizing that there's something more, not just with her, but with her childhood friend as well. Susie, as Kris walks through the empty festival with her, explains every sign that Noelle is ready to take her own life; - Giving away all the money she had - Writing something and putting it away quickly before anyone could read, more than likely for her mother to see after it was too late - Spending time with someone she loved and being completely calm, something she never really was before. Everything that she and Susie did was a step closer to her plan, that she knew she would carry out one way or another. This leads us to Kris's interaction with her. Her dialogue shows that she is a very depressed and mentally disturbed teenager, one who had been lost in her mind for a long time. She finally sees a chance to change things, and she saw the change in her childhood friend as well. While it's implied that there's more to it, all we have is the fact that this girl and her best friend both drown themselves in the lake. The only reason she had confidence to do something like this was because she was driven to it through every action that she was told to do by 'Kris'. She kept demanding that Kris say the one word she needed, the one that would set them both free. Noelle shows just how quickly mental health can take a turn in the blink of an eye. It only took a few days for her to spiral the way she did, which is something that a lot of people experience on a regular basis.

Playing through the Pool Rooms has gotten me really thinking about the liminal space and ambiance that Dreamcore truly has to offer. Whenever I think of it, it really is unsettling yet comforting in a strange way. When you reduce the world to nothing but sounds and atmosphere, the natural mysteries of one's surroundings has so much room to thrive. From the sounds of a single individual wading through water, to the footsteps echoing in a building completely deprived of life, it unnerves the brain. Humans are social creatures who thrive on interaction and other people, so to have nothing; no animals, no humans, no sounds other than what the environment provides, it starts this cycle of uncertainty. The brain begins to fill out what the surrounding area is missing, and it causes this striking sense of unease. Nothing is there, yet it always feels like something or someone could be just around the corner. It's fascinating, in a morbid sense.
