Joshua stumbled inside.
But Nicola caught his arm immediately.
“No. You can’t be in here.”
“I need— I need to see him—”
“You can’t,” she said, already guiding him backward. “We’re preparing for resuscitation.”
The word hit him like a blow.
Resuscitation.
“No— no, please—”
Nicola pushed him gently but firmly back through the doorway.
“Outside. Now.”
The doors closed.
Joshua pressed both hands to the glass, breath fogging the window, heart pounding so violently he thought he might pass out.
Inside, the NICU erupted into motion.
He was outside.
He was helpless.
He was watching the shadows move.
And the thought hit him — violent, unbidden, unbearable:
He was watching his son die.
He pressed his forehead to the glass, tears slipping down his face.
Inside, the team moved faster.
He didn’t know how long he stood there. Minutes. Maybe more. The alarms screamed. The silhouettes moved. The crash cart rolled closer. The ventilator tubing shifted. The oscillator trembled.
He whispered, “Please… please don’t die.”
The shadows kept moving.
When the doors finally opened again, Nicola stepped out, her expression tight, her voice low.
“He’s stabilising.”
Joshua’s knees nearly gave out.
He followed her inside, breath shaking, vision blurred.
The baby looked impossibly small — the length of a ruler, barely more than a pound, chest fluttering with the oscillator’s tremors. The polyethylene wrap glistened under the NICU lights.
Joshua whispered, “I’m here.”
Nicola adjusted the ventilator tubing.
“He’s very sick,” she said softly.
Joshua rested his hand lightly on the port, not touching the wrap, just being near enough to feel the tremors of the oscillator through the plastic.
“He doesn’t have a name.”
Nicola didn’t respond.
The monitor beeped sharply.
Joshua flinched.
Nicola moved quickly, adjusting the ventilator settings.
“He’s desatting,” she said. “I’m correcting it.”
Joshua’s breath broke.
He stood there, shaking, helpless, watching the numbers flicker like warnings he didn’t know how to read.
“You should go back to SICU soon,” Nicola said. “Sophia needs you.”
Joshua shook his head.
“I can’t leave him.”
“You have to,” Nicola said gently. “You need to rest. You need to check on her.”
“She doesn’t know anything,” Joshua whispered. “She doesn’t know he’s alive. She doesn’t know he almost died. She doesn’t know—”
“She’s unconscious,” Nicola said softly. “She won’t know you’re gone.”
Joshua swallowed hard.
He looked at his son — tiny, fragile, unchanged — and felt something inside him fracture.
He wasn’t enough for either of them.
He couldn’t save his son.
He couldn’t reach his wife.
He couldn’t hold his family together.
He stepped back from the isolette.
He looked at his son one last time.
Then he walked out of NICU, the door closing behind him with a soft click that felt like the world shutting him out.
He walked out of the hospital into the Miami heat — thick, humid, heavy enough to cling to the warm SICU scrubs he’d been wearing for nearly fifteen hours. His hair was greasy. His stubble uneven. His eyes red and swollen. His hands shook.
He looked like someone who had been living outside.
He crossed the street slowly, the plastic hospital bracelet tight around his wrist. Walmart’s automatic doors opened with a blast of cold air that felt too bright, too normal, too unaware of the fact that his wife was unconscious and his son was fighting for his life two floors above him.
People stared.
He grabbed a basket.
He didn’t remember doing it.
He walked down the aisles mechanically, picking up what Nicola told him to buy.
Briefs.
Polo shirts.
Cheap jeans.
Toothbrush.
Toothpaste.
Shampoo.
Deodorant.
A razor.
A charger.
He moved toward the book aisle.
A baby name book caught his eye.
He picked it up.
He didn’t open it.
He couldn’t.
He took everything to the counter.
“Take care,” the cashier said quietly.
Joshua nodded.
He walked back toward the hospital.
Halfway there, he stopped.
His legs wouldn’t move.
He sat down hard on the curb, the bag dropping beside him, the book thudding against the concrete.
He pressed both hands to his face, breath breaking, shoulders shaking.
He didn’t sob loudly.
He didn’t cry out.
He just broke — quietly, violently, helplessly — on a Miami sidewalk while cars passed and people walked by and the world kept moving as if nothing had happened.
He stayed there until his breath steadied. Until his hands stopped shaking. Until he could stand again.
He picked up the bag.
He walked back to the hospital.
He didn’t look at the book.
He didn’t look at the charger.
He didn’t open either.
He couldn’t.
Not yet.
Not without her.
Not ever.
He stepped into the family shower room, turned on the water, and scrubbed until his skin stung. He washed his hair. He shaved. He changed into the cheap Walmart clothes — stiff jeans, thin polo, deodorant that smelled like someone else.
He didn’t feel clean.
He felt scraped down to bone.
He walked toward NICU with slow, uneven steps. The corridor lights buzzed overhead. The air smelled like antiseptic and cold metal.
He reached the scrub station.
He washed his hands again.
He stepped into NICU.
The oscillator hummed softly.
The monitors flickered.
Nicola looked up.
“You’re back.”
“How is he?”
“He’s holding steady,” she said. “For now.”
Joshua stepped closer to the isolette, resting his hand lightly on the port.
“I’m here,” he whispered.
Minutes passed.
Then the door opened.
A SICU nurse stepped inside — fast, urgent, her expression tight.
“Joshua.”
He turned.
“You need to come with me.”
“What happened?”
“It’s Sophia,” the nurse said. “Her numbers are bad.”
“What do you mean bad?”
“She’s destabilising. You need to get to SICU now.”
“Go,” Nicola said. “I’ll watch him.”
Joshua ran.
He scrubbed out with shaking hands.
He ran again.
The SICU corridor was louder than before — alarms, footsteps, voices raised in controlled urgency.
He reached her room.
Stopped.
Two nurses at the bedside.
A respiratory therapist adjusting the ventilator.
A doctor pressing hard on Sophia’s sternum.
Another doctor preparing the crash cart.
Her chest didn’t rise.
Her chest didn’t fall.
Her chest didn’t move.
“She’s in cardiac arrest,” the nurse said quietly.
The doctor lifted the paddles.
“Clear.”
Sophia’s body jerked.
The monitor flickered — a flat line, then a jagged attempt at rhythm, then nothing.
The doctor resumed compressions.
Joshua stood there — clean, dressed, scrubbed, hollow — and realised something terrifying:

Summary: Liam’s Coronation to King. King Liam selects Madeline as the person he will marry. Riley is devastated.
Word Count: So over on this one: 1888 , but you know what, I wouldn’t change a word. I had no desire to try to trim this one. This just felt right as is.
Warnings: Profanity, Depression, Starvation, and a whole lotta sad.
Everything had led up to this point. She was so nervous and excited. She had staggered her re-entrance to the ballroom a few minutes after the Prince to avoid suspicion, as they had just finished making love in the palace maze. The maze where he told her she was the one he wanted and after he was crowned King, he would ask her to marry him. She would say yes. Even the thought of having children, producing heirs for him, didn’t scare her anymore, because the children would be his.
Even though they had just been together, when she entered the room again, she could feel Liam’s eyes on her, intently following her every move. He had seen her naked, a little while ago, one would think he still would not be staring at her in that state of awe fully clothed, but he was. Riley smiled at him. He smiled back.
Then she woke from the sweet dream plunging headfirst into the nightmare.
The scandal revealed ….with pictures of her almost nude for the world to see. Then worst of all, Instead King Liam calling her name, he called Madeline to be his Queen. Wake up Riley this can’t be real… but it was.

“Honey, do you fancy a game of chess with me?” Sofia, holding a chess board in her hands, flirtatiously asked her husband who was reading a book on the lounge sofa.
“Why, since when is my wife interested in chess?”Liam smiled, putting the book down. Sofia climbed into his lap and whispered between his lips:
“I just heard a rumor that you were a chess master when you were younger.”
Liam laughed heartily:
“I might know from whom that rumor came, but that was not so true. I only entered one competition and almost got eliminated.”
“That happened to be the European Youth Chess Championship. And you got the third place!”
“My Queen, you know well about me.”
“Not well enough that now I have to witness that witty brain of yours, Your Majesty.”
“Whatever suits your fancy.”
30 minutes later.
“Ha, checkmate.”
That was the cry of Sofia when she cornered Liam's king piece.
“Well done, my love.” Liam put a kiss on Sofia's lips.
“I have a feeling that you went easy on me, didn't you?”
“Well, I might have forgotten my sharp skills, don't you think?”
“Not convinced. I demand a second round. This time, you must not play below par. Consider me your real opponent.”
“I can’t when I look at you.” Liam smiled warmly.
“Alright, let me see what I can do about it.” Sofia stood up and walked towards the wardrobe. A few moment later, she came back, wearing a beautiful golden mask covering the upper half of her face.
“Ta-da.”
“You went really far for this.” The king tried to suppress a laugh.
“Now, I'm ready. You're ready. Let's start this.”
5 minutes later.
“Done.” Liam smiled, gently took Sofia's king piece.
“Whaaat? How did you do that???”
“Let's just say you help me to focus more this time.”
“Interesting.” Sofia's lips curled into a smile.
She slowly took off her mask, came forward to kiss her husband.
“I will truly believe your chess skills, my King, only after one more round. Cause now we just tied.”
“Alright, but I can still see your face.”
“Let me set this up.”
Sofia went into the bedchambers to take a bedside lamp, then she came back, put the lamp in the middle of the coffee table. After that, she turned off all the light in the room, except for the lamp that shone over the chess board on the table.
“Very professional.” Liam praised “I feel like a real contest.”
“Not done yet, baby.”
Sofia took off her pyjama, leaving just her panties.
“My Queen, what are you trying to do?”
“You can’t see my face due to distraction, but other parts of my body don’t count, right?”
Liam shook his head in half-disbelief, half-amusement.
“You never cease to tease me.”
“Can’t stand some spiciness, Your Majesty?”
“My love, we both know how promtly this game will end.”

Ethan Ramsey gripped Cassie Valentine’s hand, holding her steady, as she fished around in the storm drain for a stuffed toy and wondered how this was his life.
A few hours ago, he’d been blissfully enjoying his day, ignoring the fact that Harper Emery was pushing him into a fellowship competition he didn’t want or that Valentine had caught him in moments of weakness, not once but twice.
First, when Harper had patronizingly overruled his objections. Then during his daily walk with Teresa Martinez, one of the handful of people he let his guard down with.
Actually, scratch that. It was three times in less than 12 hours. Just an hour ago, Valentine had asked one of his oldest friends if he’d always been handsome and expressed shock (somewhat mockingly) that he actually had friends.
Well, he’d tried to shut both avenues down with a warning and a glare. Cassie had ignored him as cheerfully as a barker at a circus, impervious to the crowd’s disinterest.
Dolores hadn’t helped matters by indulging his intern’s curiosity. Nor had she been of any use when she rejected his offer of taking the squish balls in his office as a perfectly acceptable replacement for the lost stuffed toy frog she had bought for her unborn son.
And somehow, he’d been commandeered for a search-and-rescue mission to locate a stuffed toy on the side streets as fire crews battled the blaze in Dolores’s office building.
This is not how he’d imagined spending the last few hours of his thirty-sixth birthday. Trying not to breathe in the acrid smoke blowing their way and wishing he was at Donahue’s sipping a celebratory scotch in peace.
On top of that, he’d just spent an awkward half hour on the drive over fielding Cassie’s seemingly endless curiosity about his life: “If you have one, that is,” she had added archly at his sharp look.
Most interns withered after one glare from him. Just look at that curly-haired intern who was always hanging around Valentine like a puppy dog.
She appeared to be made of sterner stuff.
Ethan supposed that if he’d had one-on-one, interrupted time with an attending in his first month of residency, he’d have been mining them for information too. But he’d have stuck to medicine and not pumped them for hospital gossip.
He paused in reflection. On the other hand, he had appreciated her restraint at not spreading rumors about what she’d witnessed between him and Naveen a few days ago. Her curiosity today was only natural.
“Got it!”
At her excited exclamation, Ethan pulled Cassie back out of the storm drain, lifted her to her feet, and—before he could question the wisdom of it—dusted off the dirt and soot sticking to her scrubs as best as he could.
There was a moment, just one, almost like a whisper, when he thought she went still beneath his touch. But when he stole a glance, she was looking at the toy in her hand, not him.
He noticed a smudge of grease on her cheek. A few strands of her blonde hair were also sticking out at the ends. He almost reached out to wipe it off and smooth down the hair, but stopped himself just in time.
“Mission accomplished,” Cassie said with a smile full of delight as she held out the stuffed frog.
He stared at it thoughtfully. He reasoned, underneath all the muck, it was a cute little thing and very much something Dolores would buy.
“Excellent work,” he said neutrally, reverting to his role as her attending. “You can give Dolores the good news when we get back.”
Of course, the frog would have to be cleaned up first, he thought absently, turning towards where he’d parked his car.
“After we sterilize this, of course,” she said, walking beside him. “We wouldn't want it anywhere near a pregnant woman, otherwise.”
“My thoughts precisely,” he said, smiling in approval.
They climbed into the car, buckling themselves in before Ethan started the engine.
Just before he pulled out into the street, she turned her head, throwing him a soft smile, likely of gratitude for indulging her and Dolores.
Based on their conversation on the drive over, she had clearly assumed he was a robot, incapable of feelings because she couldn’t imagine him wanting to rescue a toy.
What had she called him? Ah, yes. Dr. Terminator.
Under the glow of the streetlights, he once again noticed the grease stain and made a decision.
“You have something….” He pointed to her cheek.
Cassie flipped the visor down to check the mirror, turning her face sideways.
Ethan reached for the box of tissues he kept in the glovebox and handed it to her.
“Thanks.”
Ethan waited for a break in traffic, banged a uey, and headed back to Edenbrook. To prevent a repeat of the question-answer period, he turned up the volume on his car stereo, and let Puccini fill the air.
A short while later, he turned into the driveway leading to the hospital’s main entrance instead of the parking lot.
The journey back had been even more awkward than the one before because the silence had stretched, as if waiting. After that, he needed some distance from her before he headed back inside.
“I’ll drop you off here,” he said, pulling up outside the atrium doors. “Page me when you get Dolores’s labs back.”
“Yes, Dr. Ramsey,” Cassie replied, waiting for locks to disengage before opening the door.
She was halfway through closing the car door when she paused, leaning back inside to peer at him.
“You’re actually not that bad when you want to be.”
Ethan smirked, secretly pleased to have surprised her for once. “Don’t let anyone know that or people will expect this from me.”
“Your secret’s safe with me… Dr. Softie,” she added the moniker boldly, her green eyes twinkling under the overhead lights.
Before Ethan could respond, Cassie shut the door and ran up the steps, disappearing through the sliding glass doors.
He wasn’t sure how long he sat there staring after her, but the sight of Bobby the security guard waving at him shook Ethan out of his reverie.
He waved back, changed gears, and drove off towards the parking lot, shaking his head at the audacity of this particular intern.
No, he mused again. This is not how he’d planned his day to go, and certainly not how he had imagined he would feel about Cassie Valentine when he’d evaluated her residency application all those months ago.
She already intrigued him, but he suspected the biggest revelations about her were yet to come.

“I don’t want to go.” Olivia threw a tantrum umpteenth time.
Drake again patiently tried convincing her. “Come on it’s been a month since we planned the Christmas eve at Beaumont’s manor.”
“Don’t push me Drake. I know you want to don the best uncle’s hat for Bartie and Eleanor. Go ahead. I. Don’t. Want. To. Go.”
“ Livia, please.” Drake closed the distance between them. Standing behind her, he curled his hands around her shoulders, kissing the loose red tendrils of hair away from her neck. “I promise it will be fun.”
“You said it last time too when that bone-head Beaumont set up the April fool prank and look where I stand now.”
Drake delicately moved his hands from her sides to cover her swollen belly. “Well, I don’t regret what we have here, thanks to that prank.”

They were newly weds when Max called them over to help him prepare for his first book reading session while Bertrand was off to the palace for some official meeting. He locked them in the library and planned to have some fun on April fool’s day. As luck would have it, Bartie fell down and got hurt. Max had to rush to the hospital with Savannah and the couple was left bolted, forgotten by Max. Alone in the library without any rescue plan, soon their carnal desires took over. What were they thinking? No protection and a month later Olivia tested postive.

Olivia leaned back, Drake taking her weight and trying to relieve her stress. Olivia was an organised person and this unplanned life changing event in their life was giving her nightmares. She was still not prepared, even after all the parenting classes Drake planned and attended with her. To add to it, she witnessed Eleanor’s birth and she was shit scared if she will be able to go through it.
“Livia, you were the smartest little girl I knew growing up. The sharpest teenager I admired and you bloomed into the strongest woman I know. You give me strength and courage to look into the eyes of this world. Our baby will be blessed to have you. You will be a great mother. And I promise I will be there with you at each step, always at your side to share all the moments. Please, stop questioning yourself.” He tilted his head to kiss her on her temple.
Olivia turned around and shrunk into him as he hugged her, trying to wash away her insecurities.
‘How? How will I take care of the tiny being? I grew up with servants, Liam and Drake were my only family. I have never known what being a mother is ? What if I hurt the little life? I want to give you the world Drake but I don’t know how?’ Olivia thought to herself but she still didn’t have the courage to voice it out in front of Drake. A teardrop rolled down her cheek whilst her face was hidden in his broad chest.
She pulled herself together for Drake once again and dressed up in the Red floral dress Drake had bought for her. “ For god’s sake, floral pattern Drake?” she had scowled.
“Don’t be stubborn, try it! Red colour is for you dear, the flowers are for our little bean.” he had lovingly planted a kiss on her growing tummy.
Drake was all smiles to see his wife in the dress. “Lose the grin Walker!” she threw the car keys at him, which he caught at the right moment without letting them smash his face.
As they drove to the Beaumont manor, Olivia warned Drake against Max. “ I promise you I will stab him if I find that bone head within 6 feet of my vicinity.”
“And I promise you that he won’t stand in the room that you occupy. He has still not revived of the shock you gave him last time when you tried to kill him by targeting that flower vase at him.”
Once at the manor, everyone got busy in the preparations for the festivities. Olivia kept close tab on Riley and keenly observed how Riley managed little Eleanor. Riley had sensed Olivia’s anxiety long back and would always keep the company whenever they met.
Max was always at safe distance. Even for dinner, he sat at the far end of the table away from Olivia.
After the meal, Riley and Savannah took their kids to bed. Bertrand and Max went to load the gifts with Bastein to be taken to the charity next day. Liam and Drake sat in the library and discussed the security for Christmas party at the palace. Olivia relaxed in the parlour. She got up to get a glass of water for herself when it all happened suddenly. Olivia felt a sudden rush of fluid down her legs. At the same time, Max came hurrying to pick the leftover gifts and bumped into Olivia. She twirled a bit as Max held her in his arms firmly but she lost her mind. “Drake!!!” she screamed.
Drake barged in, absorbed the scene in front of him and didn’t waste a second. He lifted Olivia and scurried to his car calling out, “ Liam call up the hospital and tell them I am on my way with the mamma bear.”
Luckily, Bastein was out near the car to help. He volunteered to drive them to the hospital.
In all the overwrought, no one realised that the younger Beaumont was left frozen in his place. He was scared to death, never realising that it wasn’t his fault.
“I told you I didn’t want to come!”
“Calm down dear. It has nothing to do with Max. All is under control. We were expecting this. It's time. Have faith Livia! Just breathe!” Drake maintained his poise while reassuring his wife.
Dr Montgomery was waiting at the hospital after receiving the phone call from the king himself. Olivia was admitted. Next few hours passed in a whirlwind, Olivia trying to concede in her fate, unsure about what was to happen. Drake never left her side for a minute. He was holding her hand and talking sweet nothings to their baby while soothing Olivia at the same time. He kept dabbing her face, rubbing her back running around for the ice chips. He had the hospital bag ready in the car for emergency. She had never even bothered about it. She knew he would be a doting father. Olivia was counting her blessings!
Her contractions started nearing and it was finally at the dawn of 25th December that the Duchess of Lythikos along with her loving husband welcomed their baby girl.
The royal couple who was waiting in a special room at the hospital was informed and called in, to greet baby Nevrakis-Walker. Max came with them.
Olivia was holding the tiny little red head in her arms, her eyes welled up with tears. Riley went to her side and hugged her. Liam congratulated the proud father while Max stood at a distance.
Olivia caught his attention and smiled, “Come here you!” Max apprehensively came close to her. She stretched out her free arm to hug him. “I have targeted you a lot this year. Blame those hormones.” Max was relieved that Olivia and baby were fine. “You planned it well for us Beaumont! Look we have a Christmas baby!” Olivia said gleefully. Drake was glad that his nervous Olivia was finally relaxed and happy. Max was overwhelmed, and left speechless. He just hugged her back.
“So what do we call this little bundle of joy?” Riley asked, all excited.
Olivia looked at Drake quizzically. Drake circled his arm around Olivia and gently moved his fingers over their little red head. “Lilith, fierce and strong, just like her mother.”
“Lilith,” Olivia repeated softly. “You will be the strong and protective eldest daughter of our family.”
“Livia!” Drake was surprised at her announcement. His wife who was unwilling to accept any change in her life till a day prior just announced that she was ready to dive in and let the family grow! He couldn’t stop himself and kissed his wife. Olivia was beaming at him.

I actually searched for the meaning of many names and then zeroed on Lilith. And I thought Drake should be calling his wife Livia to make more sense of choosing this name.
I did have Addison in my mind and that's how Dr Montgomery came into existence. I am so excited to see our minds thinking alike !

I'll organize all the links into a masterlist (whether it's 1 list or a few smaller ones will depend on the number of entries)
