´Pot-Heads’ 2026, 20cm high

Two artworks blending studio pottery and figurative surrealist sculpture.

The grotesques sprout from the neck of the pottery vases like spooky ectoplasm.

The faces are grimacing and bruised. I wanted to reveal turbulent inner emotions trapped inside a rigid external shell.

They were quickly and spontaneously formed from air dying clay to fit into the necks of two small pottery vases found in a charity shop.

I like the dove grey simple shaped pots.

The sculpture represents a person (gender neutral) balancing by its stomach on a metal pole.

The position shows vulnerability with legs and arms flapping helplessly.

How have they got into this awkward position?

The tap shoes suggest that recently they were dancing, learning new steps, performing for others - in control.

Although not conventionally pretty this one has turned out to be quite cute, in my opinion. Certainly not as ugly as they usually are.

Her hair is very lovely, if I may say so myself. It is wavy and brilliant shade of red. Real human hair.

Wrapped In Pain

First started in 2021 the sculpture was finished recently with the addition of the trivet as a base.

The head is head is made in layers of bandages, patches and gesso, to suggest physical or emotional trauma, injury, or surgery.

The stacked metal sieves (labeled as Endecotts laboratory test sieves) look heavy, cold, and dirty. They sit directly on top of the soft, bandaged head like a heavy crown or a crushing weight.

Mental Overload:

With this assemblage work and others such as the crushed "Brick Heads" the sculpture is conveying a sense of a person bearing a massive weight of worries, thoughts, or societal pressures. The mind is literally being weighed down by something industrial and rigid.

"Sieve-Head 2" 2026

First started in 2022 and added to in 2026, the "Sieve-Head" collection are assemblage works using found objects, in this case sieves used for laboratory science work as well as baking.

The Great Magician of the Elizabethan Age

Full of intriguing details, this book by Benjamin Woolley is highly enjoyable.

John Dee has been considered by others during his lifetime and afterwards to be a great philosopher and magician and by others to be mad or deluded. In his book The Queen's Conjuror: The Life and Magic of Dr Dee, Benjamin Woolley is open-minded in his study of an extremely complex intellectual, who may have frequently discoursed with spirits and angels in his study.

I love the description of the visit to Dr Dee by the Spirit girl Madimi, at his house at Mortlake, London in 1583. As she skips around amongst his piles books and papers and esoteric instruments, in his cluttered private library, the heaps of papers seem to move aside to prevent her tripping over them. The visit is recorded by Dee in his diary, along with many other visits by angels (or demonic sprites) and transcribed by Woolley.

" She seemed to play up and down, child-like, and seemed to go in and out behind my books, lying on heaps: and as she should ever go between them, the books seemed to give place sufficiently, distinguishing one heap from another, while she passed between them...Am I not a fine maiden?" the spirit asked flirtatiously. "Give me leave to play in your house".

Dee's skryer (medium) Edward Kelley, noted that as she skipped passed the 'great perspective glass' in the corner of the room, there was no reflection in the mirror.

My own version of a Madimi-like spirit girl in the attic, is a much plainer dressed little person. But I like to think she has a similar playful energy.

The little girl in the attic has an otherworldly appearance. Is she human or a changeling or a sprite? Her short jagged hair signifies that she is untamed, wild, and cannot be captured by human hands.

The attic space above a staircase is a location freighted with atmosphere. A poster on the wall shows Isabella Rossellini in the film Blue Velvet.

Title: Stemco Hubodometer

Sculpture 2022- 2026

Mixed Media, Hubodometer, Plaster, Bread Board.

Stemco Hubodometer utilizes a found mechanical hubo or hubodometer, a device used to measure the distance a vehicle has travelled by counting axle revolutions and displaying them on a counter.

It shows a twin headed skeletal torso whose pale body appears to have a mummified appearance. A hint of red, suggestive of seeping wounds underneath the bandages adds to the abjection of the work.

The uncanniness of this piece stems from the idea of the abnormality of conjoined twins whose shrunken heads are trapped painfully within the metal device of the hubo. At the same time the heads are pressed together to create a feeling of being trapped in an uncomfortable forced intimacy.

The work is part of a large body of work made between 2021 and 2023 which aimed to create an uncanny anxiety by juxtaposing mundane, mechanical objects within the context of the human body.

A new doll sculpture installed in my attic studio.

Mixed media, wire, muslin, wig, tap shoes.

The attic has an alcove with a built in shelving unit, which was used by my brother long ago to store his clothes and books.

I had the idea to hang the doll inside the wardrobe unit to give it the appearance of being enclosed inside a box-like space.

Enclosing the figures within cages, boxes, suitcases and furniture is a recurring theme in my work. I like to add a feeling of anxiety and uncanniness to a very mundane domestic environment.

This series features small, soft sculpture heads literally crushed by heavy household objects, such as reclaimed Suffolk White bricks from Ipswich. This uncanny collection uses a darkly humorous aesthetic to explore themes of extreme anxiety and the psychological pressures inherent within domestic environments.
