Just another day at the office

Ascension Day was finally here. For Reichard, it was one of the few times a year when his schedule was not inundated with meetings. Actually his schedule was completely free allowing him to enjoy the holiday to its fullest. He loved volunteering and spending time with the people of the city. It was a much needed change from his suffocating office. He was making his way through the crowd when he spotted a familiar mop of hair. He disentangled himself from the mass of people, thanking his lucky stars for his height. âI know,â Reichard said with a smile approaching his sister. He nodded toward her feet. âYou ok?â
Jaela had always been stronger than most even from a young age. He was proud that she had done something meaningful with her life. Even though she didnât need anyone looking out for her, Reichard couldnât help but worry. It was his job as an older brother, he guessed.
Jaela laughed. âSome small sacrifices have to be made to look good for the holiday. Not all of us are as lucky to look so dashing in something sensible.â She waved off his worrying though she was used to it by now and found it mostly endearing except for when it got in the way of her experimenting. âYou know I wouldnât wear them if I didnât want to.â Jaela pushed at her brotherâs shoulder affectionately. âI like seeing that work has not taken precedence over the important holiday. So tell me, are you going to take every night for the 16 days or is Tekiel Industries likely to combust without itâs CEO putting in overtime a week or two? Iâm going to make you dinner with me at least one other night during the celebration.â Her brother knew well enough that she wouldnât take no for an answer, even if it meant showing up at his office and dragging him out of there. Or if he was in a good mood, convincing him to use a few well placed steelpushes and head out off the balcony.
Reichard let out a good natured laugh. He missed spending time with Jaela, as stubborn as she could be.
âHey someone needs to keep the family name going! The company canât run itself...â A thought he had more often then he would like to admit while pouring over important documents late at night. âI suspect I canât say no to your offer,â he chuckled. âBut yes, I would love to have dinner with you. How are you spending the holiday? Not cooped up in your lab I hope.â
Reichard understood how important Jaelaâs research was to the greater good but sometimes he felt as though she never left her laboratory. If he wasnât so busy himself, there were many instances where he would have dragged her outside to get some much needed fresh air.

It was Ascension Day, the beginning of just over a fortnight of festivities. Jaela had dressed up beyond her normal lab attire, though keeping with her fitted attire that allowed her navigate using steel pushes if necessary. And considering the crowd she was failing to get past, now perhaps was one of those times. The streets were understandably bustling with people, but Jaela was feeling impatient. Judging the distance would be easy to clear she stepped back, dropped  a coin and burned steel to push directly off it, a second coin dropped just beyond the first was all Jaela needed to vault herself over the small crowd coming down in a small empty space and taking a few additional steps before she controlled her momentum.
She drew the gaze of someone about a foot away, and she cocked her head as their eyes met. âI promise I wasnât even going to come close to running into you. Iâve made that kind of jump perhaps thousands of times.â Allomancy wasnât something Jaela tended to hide, even if using it did draw attention. Then again, being a Tekiel did that all on itâs own, so there was no reason not to have fun. âThough Iâm thinking I could have thought to wear some more sensible shoes,â Jaela looked down at her feet with a half grimace, grateful that at least sheâd decided against the full heels.Â
