who wants to know Aku's actual canon phone number?
Everyone? great, cool. first you have to sit through science class.
TECHNOLOGY LESSON: you know the little beep sounds phones make when you push the number keys? (Landline phones always do it when you push a key, mobile phones typically only do it if you're in a call and the other end is tells you to "press 1 for yes, press 2 for no" or whatever.)
The beeps are how phones communicate. Each beep is a chord made of two notes.
See the numbers below and to the right side of the keypad? Hit 1 on a phone and it plays a tone made of two sounds at 697 hertz and 1209 hertz, etc.
When you push a key on a landline phone, it listens for the sound to figure out what number you pushed. It's called DTMF (dual-tone multi-frequency) signaling. No relation to the song.
STEP ONE: audio recording of Scaramouche dialing Aku's number.
STEP TWO: chop up the phone number, slow it down, and fiddle with it to make the DTMF tones more audible over Scaramouche's voice.
STEP THREE: shove it in Audacity, do a frequency analysis of each note one by one, look for the two places where the frequencies peak. Like this:
STEP FOUR: record the hertz value of each peak; use that to look up what number corresponds with that tone.
Aku's canon phone number is 000-5479.
(I'm hyphenating based on where Scaramouche pauses. afaik we have no direct evidence of how phone numbers are hyphenated in-universe.)
OBSERVATION ONE: the little tune Scaramouche sings doesn't actually match up with Aku's phone number. :( I'm gonna choose to believe he does that on purpose to make it harder for eavesdroppers to identify Aku's number. (eavesdroppers like ME, dammit.)
OBSERVATION TWO: Realistically the 000 is probably just whoever did the show's audio making the number sound fake, like how most fake numbers in fiction start with 555. But I'd like to imagine it's either some kind of specific area code for government phone numbers; or it's something Aku himself requested so his number could include the void.
OBSERVATION THREE: The only other in-universe identifiable phone number I can think of is the extra thicc assassin delivery service, which unlike Aku's number is only six digits. At a quick listen I think it's 852-149—it's a lot easier to identify when SOMEBODY isn't singing the wrong notes on top—but I ain't re-opening audacity to check tonight. I'll do it tomorrow.
