Tatum fought back, but could only do so for so long before knowing that she needed an escape.  The doggy door to the garage seemed to be the only way out, so she sprinted toward it, shoving her head and shoulders into the small entry. In her panic, she struggled to get more than the top half of her body through.

Instead of opening the automatic garage door, which wouldn’t have worked anyway with Tatum’s weight holding it down, Ghostface made his way toward her, driving his knife into her back. Tatum went still after a moment, blood gushing from the wound and the killer assumed she was dead. In actuality, Tatum had gone unconscious, passing out from shock and pain. 

Sidney still saw her friend as she was running from the killer, half sticking out of the garage doggy door, assuming she was dead. It was only later when the paramedics arrived that they discovered Tatum was still alive and badly injured.
