Anatoly Karpov against Fridrik Olafsson, Round 6, 1976 Euwe Quadrangular Chess Tournament in Amsterdam. Max Euwe is seen sitting behind in the background.
Analysis written by Robert Byrne on 15 June 1976 for The New York Times:
Karpov's play is noted for its singleāminded clarity in handling positional themes, a quality apparent in his last round defeat of Olafsson. Persistent pressure against a backward QP resulted in its capture [...] and game technique did the rest. In the Taimanov Sicilian, 5 NāN5 is played to induce 5 ⦠PāQ3, after which the Maroczy bind is set up by 6 PāQB4. If White rushes with 5 PāQB4, Black has an easier time, for example, 5 ⦠NāB3; 6 NāQB3, BāN5; 7 NxN, NPxN; 8 BāQ3, PāK4 with equality. The point of the strangeālooking retreat 8 NāR3 is to keep the queen file open, inhibiting ⦠PāQ4, while the knight observes QN5, discouraging a later break by ⦠PāQN4.

checkmate!
the ladder checkmate is my favorite one to do because it makes sense and im actually really bad at chess
applied to the uniās chess team selection contest for fun bc i thought iād get dropped immediately but turns out it was a rapid swiss tournament where i spent 3 rounds sweating my balls, blundered 3 queens and barely held it to endgame
