⭐Tips for more effective Tarot readings⭐
1. Ask open-ended questions!
Avoid starting with “should”, “will”, and “when”. Instead, ask “how”, “why”, and “what”.
Yes or no questions are considered close ended questions and won’t lead to deeper insight.
2. Get to the heart of the question!
“What’s my soulmate like?” is a close ended question. Instead, ask questions like “What signs might I see when my soulmate appears?” or “What might I do to attract the right partner for me?”
3. Ask follow-up questions!
For example. Some good follow-up questions to “How can I live in alignment with my soul’s purpose?” might be:
What is coming into my conscious awareness about my soul’s purpose?
How can I discover my soul’s purpose?
What is my soul’s purpose?
How am I presently living in alignment with my soul’s purpose?
What inner work do I need to do to be in alignment with my soul’s purpose?
What resources are available to me that will help me to live in alignment with my soul’s purpose?
What will bring me closer to my soul’s purpose?
What may stand in the way of me fulfilling my soul’s purpose and how can I overcome this?
4. Consider this!
Am I asking the right question of the Tarot? Is it open-ended and does it allow for deep exploration and insight? Does it get to the heart of the matter? And are there follow-up questions I could ask?
5. More question ideas!
Clarifying the circumstances
What do you have no control over?
What is hidden?
Who is involved?
What do I need to know?
How is your environment?
Where can I find help?
Where are opportunities?
How am I approaching the problem?
How do others perceive me?
Where in the journey am I?
Targeting the underlying problem
What is blocking me?
What are the obstacles?
What is my true wish?
What is my ultimate goal?
What would make me happy?
What do I need to develop?
What can I change?
What are my strengths?
What are my weaknesses?
What is my biggest challenge?
Finding the solution
What advice do I need?
What can help me overcome?
What can I do?
Where is this leading to?
How can I use opportunities?
Where should I focus?
What do I need to let go of?
What do I need to learn?

Stop Learning Tarot Cards Like Flash Cards (You’re Better Than That)
One thing I’ve noticed as I’ve started teaching tarot cards to other people is that they have a tendency to think that every card has an individual meaning and it is their duty to memorize 78 complex sets of meanings before they can begin reading for others.
That’s simply not true.
It’s also incredibly inefficient and totally kneecaps you when you move on to learn another deck (and try memorizing ANOTHER 78 complex sets of meanings). Cards exist in relation to one another. Understanding those relationships lets you remember meanings quicker, better understand how cards in a spread might be connected, and give much smoother readings.
If you’re learning Tarot for the first time or looking to bush up, here’s my advice after reading cards for 10 years. Please, learn from my mistakes. Tarot is a language
In the same way you learn letters and string them into words and then string words into sentences to communicate, tarot is a language you learn so your intuition can communicate more fully with you and others. And like a language, it’s often best to start with the phrases that you’ll use the most.
Practice: Go through your deck and pick out no more than 12 cards that are really calling to you and look up those meanings. Write them down if you’re up for it. Go through your deck and pick out no more than 12 cards that give you a feeling of unease and do the same. Notice any reoccurring symbols?
Tarot is a story
How you understand that story may vary on your tradition, your experience level, your aims. Most standard Tarot decks follow the Fool’s Journey through the Major Arcana as he becomes more skilled and then more enlightened. A similar pattern can be seen in each of the suits. The Court Cards are less narrative in my opinion but a similar progression can be seen.
Practice: Take out each of the suits one at a time and lay them out in a row. Read the meanings of each card and see how the story progresses. Write down a summary. Do the same with each of other suits’ courts and the major arcana.
Tarot is a system
You aren’t fluent until you know the language well enough to speak smoothly and in most situations. Similarly, it takes understanding Tarot at a high level to give the best quality readings and read without a book. No card exists in isolation and just like when they show up in a reading, you must read them in relation to the rest of the spread - it helps a lot to know them in relation to the rest of the deck.
Practice: Lay every card in your deck out like this (pardon my bad MSPaint job). Major Arcana up top and Court Cards off to the right and all the numbers lined up with the Fool and World left hanging. Pick one of the cards that resonated with you in the first exercise and look at how it relates to all the other cards in the deck. If it’s the 8 of Pentacles, what do the other 8′s look like and speak to? What do 8 (Strength) and 18 (the Moon) in the Major Arcana connect to it (if at all)? How does it relate to the rest of the story of the Pentacles? Hope this helps! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

The Veil
(a spread for Samhain)
This spread is for gaining insight about the upcoming season and what Samhain will bring for you.
1. Where should I look for guidance?
2. How can you find peace and relaxation this season?
3. What should you focus on internally?
4. Where should you look for warmth this cold season?
5. Where should you direct your focus?
I will be offering readings of this spread for the rest of October! Message me for pricing info!
Samhain will be here before you know it. Sometimes referred to as “The Witches New Year” it is, not only a time that’s believed to be when the veil between our world and the afterlife is at it’s thinnest, but also a time to reflect on the past year and look to the future.
Let this spread be a guide as you prepare yourself for the cold and dark months ahead.
Card 1 : Your Past
This card represents all you’ve learned and experience this past year (since last Samhain). Let this be a reminder to you of how far you’ve come.
Card 2 : Your Future Love Life
Will you have one? Is it important? What should you be focusing on in your relationship in the new year? These are all questions that this card can answer for you.
Card 3 :Your Future Work
This card will represent your career for the coming new year. Whether this be to help you figure out any doubts you have about a new career path or promotion, or if how you can better improve your current work ethic / attitude. Let this card help you figure out where you’re trying to head [in your career] in the new year.
Card 4 : Your Present
What are you still dealing with right now? This card will help you better understand where you’re at in this moment so that you’ll better understand how to get to where you want to be.
Card 5 : Your Future Self
Let this card be a guide for your coming new year. Allow it to represent where you need to be in the future, as far as self and self-love goes.
**feel free to print this out and add it to your tarot journal, BoS, Grimoire or whatever sort of notebook system you use**
Yesterday was a good day filled with simple joys: I ate pizza with my youngest sister to celebrate her birthday, I cleaned my car and filled the gas tank, and I spent the evening with my niece and my baby nephew. Comfort, company and humble pleasures are a few of the things that we usually take for granted. I wanted to bring this up because the Considerate Cat Tarot deck, by Madeleine Belanger, highlights those softer moments in life that deserve so much more attention and gratitude.
This tarot deck is inspired by the stories of rescue cats. All of the cards include cats with different personalities and in different situations. Many of the cards focus on a real rescue cat with a story to tell - and in fact, it is possible to read all about them here. While some of the cards feature anger, sadness or fear (nicely reflected in the cats’ gestures, postures or surrounding details), I would like to mention that, overall, the vibe I get from this deck is one of rest, of encouragement, and of relief. This comes from both the actual, very real background of this deck and its stories, but also from the chosen colour palettes and the artwork in general.
In terms of symbolism, some of them are more traditional while others are freer in their execution. In general, all of the details are really well chosen to aid the main cat (or cats) convey and deliver a message. There’s always something new to extract from each card, and they are just so charming! The (mostly) lineless design allows a natural flow between the main elements and their backgrounds. When I pick more than one and put them together, they almost look like a quilt - where every square is different and has its own personality, but which is part of a bigger, cohesive structure. The illustrations feel airy with a grounding touch that makes them balanced and welcoming. I think this can be clearly observed in the backs too!
The 40 page pocket guidebook is a great companion to the deck. It features an introduction, spread notes, card guide and explanations (including keywords) and a “rescue cat glossary” - with actual pictures of the cats, and everything in full colour! The court cards have been renamed to daughter, son, mother and father. It’s a bit bigger than the deck so it comes outsidde of the box, which is very sturdy and features a green ribbon to lift the cards easily. The deck also comes with an extra card with some more information, and a cute little postcard.
The Considerate Cat Tarot deck is both a work of art and a personal mission. These cats are real and have stories to learn from, which combined with the wisdom of tarot, allows us to go a step beyond. In fact, 5% of all proceeds go towards local rescue work in Vancouver. Madeline proves that such a gentle, loving and kind energy is only the gateway to powerful improvement work, which is where its real potential is hidden (aside from being simply beautiful). You can find more pictures, information and products on the Considerate Cat site, so go ahead and let your feline curiosity shine!!
