The Fool's Dance

I tiptoe up to my parents to scare them. Do it As quietly as possible and I make sure that they can't see me. there is a thrill and anticipation: i expect laughter, surprise, delight.

I stand on my tiptoes to reach for the candies. The treasure is right on the surface—just one simple movement, and I already have it.

I play hopscotch with my friends. And each of us knows that the most correct jump is the one on our toes, because this way there is more lightness and flight.

In adult life, it is not convenient to walk on tiptoe. Here, everyone should step firmly, from the heel, confidently and without hesitation. But who says it should always be like this?

🔸Hemlock (Tsuga) is a tree often associated with concepts of power, control, and firmness. In mythology and culture, Hemlock can symbolize both wisdom and danger. In traditional culture, it is seen as protective and stable, but with a dangerous aspect, reminding us of the risks of power abuse and rigidity.

🌿 Symbolism of the objects on the card

🔸Cacao — an ancient sacred plant used in rituals, ceremonies, and healing practices. In Maya and Aztec cultures, cacao was not merely a drink, but a gift from the gods, a tool for meditation and a means of deep understanding of the world.

The Maya saw a similarity between the cacao pod and the heart — symbolizing the soul and spirituality. They also saw a connection between chocolate and blood — symbolizing the fluid that holds life energy within.

Let's talk about the shadow side of the Fool Arcana.

I should mention that I usually perceive Tarot Arcana as energies and don’t divide them into good or bad. However, for the sake of explanation, I sometimes use the terms “shadow” or “light” manifestations of energy. I distinguish these manifestations based on creation and destruction. If the energy is directed towards creation, it is a light manifestation; if towards destruction, it is a shadow one.

Now, back to the Fool Arcana. There is a striking example of the shadow Fool in pop culture: the movie Joker.

⭐️ First, take a look at the visual representation (the movie poster and the Fool card from the Rider-Waite deck).

⭐️ Second, let’s turn to the history of the cards. Playing cards have a direct connection to Tarot. The Fool is the only Major Arcana that made its way into the standard deck of playing cards. And it happened thanks to its "emptiness." In a playing deck, the Joker can take on any value. The visual resemblance is also obvious.

⭐️ Now, let’s talk about the Joker from Todd Phillips’ film.

The Fool symbolizes new beginnings, a leap into the unknown, freedom from stereotypes and restrictions, carefreeness, and openness to the world. The shadow Fool, however, is a madman who does not realize the consequences of his actions, a person detached from reality, living in illusions. And we know that the protagonist has multiple diagnosed mental conditions.

In the movie, we clearly see Arthur stepping into the Fool Arcana — his dance on the staircase. That moment represents his "leap of faith", symbolizing the beginning of his new path. Speaking of the dance… It may seem out of place or overly dramatic, but historically, only court jesters were allowed to behave in such an unpredictable manner in the presence of a king.

One can also note his bright costume and makeup—both referencing the classic Fool archetype.

His new path leads to complete transformation, but unlike the light Fool, who is free and open to the world, the shadow Fool follows a path of chaos and destruction. He rejects old rules not to gain wisdom but to break down the established order.

It’s also worth paying attention to Arthur’s state before his final transformation. The Fool represents pure potential, but in its shadow aspect, this potential lacks direction—it becomes a chaotic force capable of destruction. Arthur wandered in search of recognition and acceptance, but in the end, rejected by society, his "leap of faith" turned into anarchy and violence.

This film shows us the extreme manifestation of the shadow Fool — when spontaneity turns into uncontrollable chaos, and rejecting the old world leads not to growth, but only to destruction.

Chaos was infinite and dark, a yawning chasm through which the jumbled elements that would later make up the world were forever falling.
