been playing zero parades for dead spies, and it tickles my brain in just the right way.

it's such a shame that the cloud of studio ownership and info about the shitshow with the creative team hangs over it, because what's here is a really engaging rpg. there's obvious and unavoidable comparisons you can make to disco, but it deserves to be judged on its own terms.

reading disco superfans' opinions on this game is actually maddening. "style no substance." "no ideological stance" "so clearly ripping off disco"

if you're boycotting za/um because of what happened to kurvitz and lindpere et. al. fair enough, but don't pretend like that means you know the merits of zero parades based on the two screenshots of dialogue i keep seeing bandied about. or whatever turned you off the game in the demo. you're making up a game in your mind and getting mad that it's not some platonic ideal of a "disco elysium successor". it's a quasi religious reverence for the ur-text of post-communism crpgs. that's no way to go about engaging with media.

plus, it's almost unanimously agreed on that the game is at its worse when it's knowingly making nods to disco elysium, but that's such a small percentage of what happens in the game. it's actually not trying to be another disco elysium. it's trying to tell its own story in its own setting, and it deserves to be met where it's at.

zero parades is a beautiful story about the personal and moral compromises inherent to working for a large, unfeeling state apparatus. the ambiguity of it being a personal failing or the failing of your employers. the futility of individuals in the face of the cooperation between international capital and a vast fascist cultural machine that's primed to use military force anyway.
