This could be based on literally anything, including just vibes. But ideas could come from mythology (gods and spirits and heroes and monsters from different cultures). Or history (figures who famously studied or thought about or worked with geology, etc.). Or media (many different stories, games, and movies have characters, classes, and species who are connected with stone, caves, mountains, etc.). Or simple word association derivatives (for example, with "earth" you could get "seismology", which could yield Sei, Eismo, Ismolo, Smolog, etc.).

Pardon me, but I am the QUEEN of oc naming :3 Including unique names like one of my dragons, who's name is Gairnati, and a snake-lizard thing named Firuzeh :3 but then again I do have a Kanea and a Kavara, A Lilac, Lilly, Lyla, and Lillian, and then the ocs I named after rocks.. Tourmaline, Sapphire, Ruby, Obsidianpaw (Shes a warriors oc), Jade, Jet, etc.

but yeah i like naming ocs, especially if I get to mash up names of different things in different languages. Or even things in english

Take Gairnati. Their name is taken from Garnet, air, and tekhelet (a shade of blue)

and then there are the ones that are simply single words google translated

Like Jigeen is literally 'Feminine' in some language I forgot. yes, I am being serious. And her sister Verge is Guard in another language I also forgot. So on and so fourth, other languages are good ideas on how to make oc names!

Color names are good places to start, find a color name that sounds cool to you. Preferably a single word but it can be more than one squished together. and then take something that looks like it could relate to the character. For Gairnati I took Garnet and Tekhelet because Gairnati is a mostly red-maroon dragon with blue horns and spikes. So do something like that

Smoosh the stuff together into a way that rolls off the tongue (Or doesn't, it really doesn't have to :3) and boom, oc name!!

You can also have noun, verb, or even adjective names, such as (Again using my own ocs as reference): Sting, Char, Tempestuous, etc!

you can also use real names that you like, the possibilities are endless!

or you can.. be Trivago I guess. It's not going well though, so I don't suggest naming your ocs after hotel companies.

I also find it funny when you make an oc with a name that normally represents the other gender (Or have a nickname like that) like a girl named Evan (Evana) or Alex (Alexa) or the other way around! (I personally cant think of any examples rn lmao)

heck, name your ocs after animals, like Bluejay or Wren!

Or even places like Nile!

The possibilities really are endless!
