Hell Is In Pittsburgh Tonight
I.
It almost felt like the Before. Before the oil dried up. Before war, pestilence, famine, and death became old drinking buddies instead of harbingers of the end. Before Hickey fashioned herself the savior of the poor, huddled masses. When there were still lights at night and it was easy to visit his family in Detroit. Now Detroit was an impossible walk and even the days started to feel dark.
II.
A battered man moved cautiously across the clearing. His honey-brown hair was long, beard unkempt. When Edward met his gaze, his one good eye darted wildly, as if he were a hunted animal. The other was gone, blood trailing down his cheek like a Grecian mourner.
βWhat happened? Who did this?β Ed gasped, moving to help.
The man didnβt speak a word. He raised a sure and steady finger, pointed straight at Edwardβs heart.Β
