After however many hours of silence since Tanaka left, the liveliness and volume he brought was rather jarring. Numa stared from his seat in bed, hunched like a disgruntled cat and his eyes narrowed with irritation.
How the topic of a curtain was brought up in casual conversation was beyond his abilities to care. "Not hungry," he snapped back and turned around, tucking himself against the wall. "Just leave it in the fridge."
His expression softens and nods. "Fine." He puts Numa's sandwiches and drink in the fridge. Knowing damn well it's going to go bad if Tanaka doesn't remind him.
Still he doesn't push.
Setting up his meal at the table, Tanaka is pleased with his choice of food today. It's just junk food--- a difference from their usual diet. He unwraps the sandwich and takes a big bite. "Mmm... So, today kinda sucked. I kept trying to talk to you, but I forgot you weren't with me."
He waits for Numa to get used of him being around.
"Then I listened to those audios you recommended. They were awful. I was scared for the rest of the clean."

What a long day... of doing absolutely nothing.
What was the point of anything? Numa should be up at least cleaning the apartment, or actively searching for work- but even doing something as getting up to use the toilet seemed too much. It was all a bother. Life seemed too much; too much effort, too hard, nothing good was meant for him.

Today, Tanaka was working a small job. It was a one room clean up and he figured Numa could use the day off. Already the night before Tanaka could tell something was brewing within his friend. Numa talked harsh and blunt, knowing Tanaka wouldn't take it personally.
They spend so much time together, Tanaka knew when to give the man some space or when to keep him entertained. It's a full time job, but he doesn't mind. Tanaka loves being needed.
The door swings opens.
"Numaaaa! Are you hungry? I picked up some sandwiches because I want to win a contest for a jacket." He toes off his shoes by the door and hangs up his jacket. "I met a man who wants to take back the curtains, but I didn't tell him about all the designer clothes we walked out with."
He's talking out loud waiting for Numa to respond or not.
"Come eat with me or I'll start bitching."

"That was nice of them," he commented lightly and flicked ash from his cigarette. That sounded hardly respectful to the deceased, assuming it was next of kin that handled the aftermath.
Not that it was any of his business.
He nodded in answer. "She was arrested at the airport," he informed. It caused a whole scene and had the news raving for nearly two days. No point in trying to keep it secret when anyone can look it up online, in his opinion.
"So why the curtains?" He couldn't help but ask. The place looked to belong to people that enjoyed luxury, so out of everything it was curious to him that someone would choose a window furnishings over some expensive art piece or appliance.
"Say what you want about the wife, but she had style." He comments like he's remembering standing in the home; in the middle of the crime scene. The home was decorated with care; everything had a place and it was made to look luxurious. "It reminds me of my old apartment. I recognized the curtains were the same ones I had. Plus, the husband was too short for me to take any of his clothes. I did take one of his colognes. Then me and Numa were already going to the bar and we couldn't haul everything." Tanaka was a chatter and could fill the air with a one-sided conversation.
"Was there more people involved? How are my curtains involved?" Did he bring home a bloody curtain? He feels his stomach flip with an uneasy feeling. "Are my curtains dirty?"
Was he going to be haunted now?

Did... did he hear that right?
"They're in... your living room?" he clarified in disbelief. His shoulders visibly sagged at the news and he shook his head. This would be hilarious if it had been happening to anyone else. This is also why he always refused to do footwork- it was always the weirdest people that needed to be tracked down.
"And I suppose you see nothing wrong with that," he sighed, resigned to the news. Technically, this could be labeled as obstruction of justice (possibly theft?).
But was he willing to be that petty?
"Did you hang them up as is?" Gods above, please tell him they were not washed yet. The universe needs to give him a fucking break.
Why was it so hard to believe that Tanaka would take the curtains? "It's not like I didn't ask." He takes a sip of his coffee. "The guy who hired us, said we can take anything we wanted after we finish the job. My roommate picked out some clothes and I took the curtains." He says so confidently to the detective.
Tanaka continues to lead the man on his path home like a pair of street cats, without a care in the world.
"That job was awful--- did they ever catch the lady who did her husband in? I heard she did some unspeakable shit." Blue eyes zero in on the detective. "Are you allowed to talk about it?" Always here for the tea.
Oh, this kid was outright rude as all hell. He waits for the young man to finish the insulting endorsement with a frown. "Thanks." He said flatly and purposely blew his cigarette smoke into the younger man's face.
"Anyway.. That's part of why I wanted to talk with you. Does this apartment look familiar?" he asked, showing Tanaka a photo of a living room space. White leather couches, dark marble floors and curtains missing from the rack. A cleaning job done well.
"I need those curtains," he stated and flashed Tanaka his badge. "Please."
"Your welcome."
He coughs in response to Ryo. "Wow! You're an asshole." He fans the smoke away. Tanaka wasn't sure why Ryo was so offended in the first place, it was the truth. Was he supposed to lie? He leans down to grab his drink from the vending machine.
Coming back up and shaking the can, he looks over to the phone screen. He does recognize the living room. "Oh yeah, me and my roommate were paid pretty good too. The guy said if we put extra effort, he'd tip us good." Blue eyes drop to the badge. "Sure, but I have them hanging in my living room. I couldn't pass up on designer," he admits with no shame.

Heh... now that they were both introduced. "I have the rest of the day off. What about you? Want to go look at the rest of the plants in the park? Not everything is out, but enough are." He waits for her response.
His eyes flick from the lighter to the other man's eyes before taking it. He has a cigarette lit within two strikes, steadily staring with a tired expression. "Not my scene," he says and offers the lighter back.
"Thanks. And you?" he asks, raising his phone and fiddles with whatever on the screen. "You around here a lot?"
Taking the lighter back and pockets it. "It's not your scene? Then what do you do with friends? Oh no, are you the old man type already? You can't be! With a face like that, you still have a fighting chance. Ladies looooove a fixer upper!"
He leads Ryo towards the vending machine and orders himself a hot coffee. "I'm not in one place for too long. I work as a special maid."

Coming to the park, Tanaka figured it would be a way to work off some energy then go home to settle down for the rest of the day. Taking the time to look around and get caught up in his own thoughts.
Pulled from his thoughts, he noticed her backing up and said nothing. When she bumped into him, Tanaka laughs. "You're fine. Did you drop your bread?" He's not sure he can fight off the ducks.

The older man had been standing out there for a while, seemingly minding his own business with his phone out. It was a quiet evening, about the time shift workers switch out and when smaller businesses close up for the day.
It was only when someone stepped out into the street, Ryo followed after and fell into step with them.
"Hey, got a light?"
"What?" He pulls out an earbud.
Turning around, Tanaka glanced over to the man asking him for a lighter for his cigarette. His nose wrinkles in disgust. "Gross." All the same, he pulls out a lighter from his bag. "Here." Silently he's waiting for that familiar scent of cigarette. "Are you drinking around here?"
