Goldfish myths are embedded in our culture. Here’s a closer look at many misconceptions people have about them. As a goldfish owner/lover myself, I think it’s important when anyone new to the hobby learns why these myths hurt goldfish as a pet, and how to properly care for them so they can reach a nice ripe age of 10-20. I’d love it if these myths could be dispelled to the point where no one believes goldfish belong in fish bowls. :) Here are the links for the references:

Why I don’t recommend gravel or pebbles in goldfish tanks: my goldfish have both become big enough to swallow these algae tablets whole. Luckily, the pellets disintegrate very quickly and do no damage. A piece of substrate this big (or even smaller pieces) will get stuck if your goldfish swallows them (which happens quite often!), and in a lot of cases you’re going to have to take them out with tweezers. This is very stressful for the fish.
