Suddenly, I revived an old draft, churning out 14,000 words in literally just two days.
It was supposed to be all lighthearted fun and games, but—as usual—it turned into a 89% platonic BruMira story, complete with drama, a deep psychological dive into the characters, only rare glimmers of humor here and there… and an attempt to shout all the way from Earth to Pluto (a successful attempt, at that).
Art to commemorate 10 years since release of first episode of animated series «Fantasy Patrol» («Сказочный патруль» / «Fairytale Patrol»).
This is a Russian magical girl series, and its premise is focused on protagonist, Alyonka (in Eng version Helena), meeting three girls arrived for vacation in her hometown Myshkin (inspired by real-life town of the same name), known as tourist attraction themed around fairytales. As it turns, the town is a secret residence of fairytale and mythical creatures, and Alyonka’s new friends, who are also visitors from magical world (the native home of Myshkin’s residents), are becoming town guardians, each a master of elemental power, keeping under control unstable magical entities within it. Alyonka also becomes their ally, despite having no powers of her own, while a mystery unfolds connecting two worlds and a secret of Alyonka that was unknown to her.
I’d like to draw a piece for each episode and many of characters of the series eventually, as I did couple of pieces inspired by it in the past years.

Though initially I’d planned to finish it to March 6, I’ve decided to complete it with no hurry. Previous one was finished in a rush, and I wasn’t quite satisfied with a result, so now I want to take my time for the better outcome, while still having it by the end of month.
It’s the beginning of the project dedicated to 5th Anniversary of “Encanto” movie, which I dubbed the Year of Madrigals.
Its premise is to make 12 portraits of the members of Familia Madrigal during the year, starting from the youngest one to the matriarch herself. Its initial plan was to have one picture a month, but as one can see, its start was moved to the beginning of Spring. Anyway, I’m going to stick to the plan and catch up on it through March, so starting with April, it would follow the intended schedule.
The idea behind it to represent Madrigals and their gifts after the events of main story, so expect some artistic license in designs (think a year-two after the movie’s plot). I’d like to also speculate on directions their powers would go with a renewed source of magic, but maybe, in its own turn. Or, look at it as simple fan interpretation of characters! In addition, I would go yapping a bit about my subjective opinions on each of them.
There’s not a lot I can say about Antonio, he’s a very straight-forward character and only a young kid, definitely one of the purest characters and one of the only in family who, as I like to joke, aren’t in the need of therapy (or, rather, spared of the need of it in time). He’s somewhere among the favorite characters in the movie for me, by default, since the first trailer. (I remember my preliminary thoughts were like: probably, I’m going to like the animal kid and maybe, this hermit-like person with rats, too.)
My overall take on him is all boiling down to two things, essentially:
Out of all the kids, his personality appears to be closest to Bruno, no wonder, he forms instant, even though brief, connection with his uncle. (Again, his name is a possible reference to the Saint Anthony, a Father of All Monks, known for his reclusive life, which is not far from Bruno as well.) Ironically, he was born after Bruno’s disappearance, and, considering complicated and tumultuous feelings his mother carries for her brother, one can figure, there should be air of additional sentimentality surrounding the child so strikingly resembling the gone relative, especially for those who knew him in his childhood. To some degree, maybe, even Alma’s caring attitude toward him is rooted in some apologetic feelings towards her runaway son. Or Pepa, that mad woman, unintendedly subconsciously raised her new kid in image of her bro, that is too a possibility, haha…
Another thing is, a subtext of Antonio’s gift, which emerges in time his family is in dire need of reconnection and resolving their long-brewed conflicts, and concept of the gift is: ability to listen and speak in return with those that don’t have a voice to speak their mind (to other kind of creatures). So, he’s representing the power needed for restoration of connections and mutual understanding. The hope not only for the miracle to keeping strong, but for family to stay together and strong (he’s also appearing to be someone people are coming together for, despite their tiffs). To some degree, if not Mirabel’s pursuit for becoming a miracle’s savior, it could as well be Antonio, who would eventually unveil the mystery of Bruno, via those treacherous rats. He would have been a protagonist all along, interesting to think about.
A last thing, in regard of the art, I’d like to draw more creatures, there’s just as many of them as one can put into picture without trailing away from the main character. Fauna of South America is immense ad diverse, there’s still many species and natural habitats that are hidden from researchers, truly a “The Lost World”. I just included some of my favorite ones. I like to draw creatures, even if I’m far from skilled animalist)
So sweetly does the fire lick our tender flesh, to lure out the flame within our blood, that of passion, of ambition. So pungent is the serpent's venom, fang plunged deep to fill us, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty. If sharp succor we yet take in one another, as king in ichorous red and queen in silken white, then let our fell purpose be unshaken. Let the heavens of gold peer not upon our consummate blasphemy, 'til deign we to part the dun smoke of this earthen peak, that our keen knife relish the wound it makes.

I finally did it! I did it! I wrote a sweet, light, and fluffy story about Bruno and Mirabel's wedding. I didn't turn it into another maxi-fic (though I tried), it's just light and fluffy fluff.
oh yeah, it's not exactly a platonic brumira, but.... 70%?
