Zuumi was Zasammel's firstmate back when Sammy went by Captain Dyre Brineheart, back when she was bright eyed and bushytailed about everything in the world, a curiosity that could rival a sylvari. Captain Brineheart needed a better edge for treasure hunting and navigating the sea, she was a newly minted oceanographer looking for field work, and he was able to charm her to work on the ship. Zuumi believed in him and it was actually out of a "well why not" whim that Zummii even became a member of his crew.
She took to it like a fish to water, and really truly respected and admired Captain Brineheart as her captain and as a person. Unfortunately, Brineheart also has a horrible habit of using people for personal gain, so often time he would offload a lot of responsibilities onto her and abuse her willingness to help mainly because it was convenient. Outside of that though, she was able to take some of the saltwater out of his briny heart, be less of an artificial character and more personable. After the loss of the ship and crew...he hasn't seen about her since he took on a new identity but thinks about her often. Zuumi on the other hand, pulled a full ass Spinel from Steven Universe, scorned and jaded, doesn't trust anyone else but herself, and absolutely despises Zasammel.
