Zubes and Zines
First off zubes aren’t a thing. At least not something I’m aware of. I just tried to spell the word zines, and zubes is what I got. Which is great, because the word zubes really made me laugh. Which in itself is a wonderful thing, because I accidentally made a joke. Zubes. Zuuubes. Anyway, onto the proper appreciation post. Zines. I love zine culture. There is an unfortunate discrepancy in terms of the amount of artists there are, and how many successful artists there are. So many of us want to live by creating, and for many it isn’t a reality. Even if we can’t live off our art, the joy of being able to share our creations with others is often enough. But in our society we so often only assume that big talent is worth buying into. This is where zines come into it. People willing spend their money supporting unknown artists! It’s a fucking miracle! People will walk around shops filled with tiny little magazines all created with love by mostly local talent. You look through these piles of paper, each one crying out for attention, an artist waiting to share a part of their own mind and life with you. You flick through until you find one you like, and if you decide to buy it, you keep that artist going a little longer. It’s beautiful to see an entire community take the time to celebrate each other like that. Zuuuubes.Â
