Zootopia is one of the major cities within America, basically rivaling the equivalent of New York City. It was the very first city in the U.S. to introduce expansion on environmental technology and cohabitation between 64 different species and climbing. A city of dreams, where anyone can be anything. At least . . . that's what they say.
The reality is that Zootopia has always struggled with inclusivity. On the outside it's a paradise where "anyone can be anything", but behind the scenes there's constant backlash between species. Thousands of people have been affected each day by the rapid political stances rising between "Predators" and "Prey". Terms used very loosely to subject carnivores and herbivores into harmful categories and stereotypes, not taking into account the wider spectrum of species categorization.
At the end of the day the people of Zootopia are consistently measuring the worth of a species based solely on whether or not they fit into society's version of the word "harmful". It'll take more than one rabbit or fox to fix this city, but at least they're taking the necessary steps to carve the path to a brighter future.

Artist Notes:
(No Zootopia 2 spoilers)
I know I might get some backlash on certain aspects of these designs, especially for Judy. She is so much different to her in-movie appearance and that's for good reason. I hit a spark while I was searching for references and knew I needed to go with it.
I know they're both cops (at least in the second movie) but I've always seen them more as detectives because of the events in both plots. Both with Bellweather and the Lynxley/De Snake Family. The amount of detective work they do warrants an upgrade, so these two are rocking their own little badges on chains and as I've seen in almost every detective show I've ever watched or seen clips of, very comfortable clothing.
I gave Judy the MOST detective looking outfit I could find on pinterest and gave Nick a very comfortable sweater that still gave that baggy feel to it, without having to draw those stupid shirts he wears in the movies (idk why I don't like them, no I don't need therapy).
As for the changes in actual appearance, I tried to keep it as close as I could while still sticking to my style and preferences, while also using real animal references. (Yes. I gave Judy hair. Deal with it. I'm not changing it, it looks good, and it makes me happy. I worked really hard on those dang colors.)
Now as a Zootopia (Universe) fan (not so much the movies themselves mainly the worldbuilding/characters tbh), I'm keeping their personalities as close as I can within the story. Of course my character development is going to be slightly different because the majority of the first part of the A.S.A. story is within the Zootopia universe. Which means I have to go along with the logic/canon of the movies while also creating my own storyline which I am very heavily working on right now.
Now, that being said, as a fan I'm going to be brutally honest. Judy Hopps is a reallyyyyy hard character for me to love on. She ticks off all of the boxes that, irl, I would rather jump in a hole than talk to this chick. But as an MC I have always rooted for her because Disney didn't do that bad of a job making her a semi likeable character in the end of both movies especially the second one (she really redeemed herself for me). She's still learning and growing and that's what I appreciate.
Nick of course grows a lot too, and I'm going to make it a point, within the story, to dip into his childhood a bit more than what they did in the movies. And yes . . . Mrs. Wilde gets a PROPER comeback . . . you're welcome. She is an icon and deserves the spotlight for once. (Yes, you’re right! She does get her own redesign!!) Woman raised that boy by herself on a waitress' income and you're telling me Nick never talks to her???? NAH. We fixin' that. Boy you better give some respect to your mama or I SWEAR—!!!!
Ahem . . . what was I saying?
Oh yeah.
Anyways I hope you all like them. I was SO nervous over Nick's design because I have such a hard time drawing Forerunners (visit my evolution post for more info) aka the classic hind leg walking anthros (there’s GOTTA be a better term for that) we all know and love. THANKFULLY I got him in one go and I think Judy was a little bit more difficult but we figured it out in the end. I'm getting a LOT better with rabbits/foxes (thank you Tweak/Y.N.) so hallelujah, I didn't die this round. Praise the Lord.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments! If you come at me for giving Judy hair I will be in your dreams tonight . . . good luck.
(For those of you who haven't watched the second movie, don't worry. Until the end of this year any Zootopia (2) content will be marked as "Spoiler" just in case anyone needs to catch up on their watch list. I do REALLY recommend watching it, but just so you know you may get some whiplash watching it. It's very fast paced and I've still been meaning to go re-watch it with my girlfriends because I KNOW I missed some important details leading up to the finale.)
