I’m often drawn to music in the minor keys, even though I wasn’t so fond of too many flats and sharps when I grew up taking piano lessons, since they tended to test my limited skills constantly. Minor key songs are often dark or melancholic. Not to say I’m not an optimist, but I’ve always been in tune with the darker side of things. Perhaps that’s why I find a song named A Flat appealing, especially since it opens up with a plethora of brooding keys. A Flat, which has already been played by Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 1 and featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist, comes from London newcomers Zooni, an art pop band with a penchant for hypnotic beats, delicate piano, angular guitars, and haunting vocals. It’s a beautifully striking piece that blends the sounds of Portishead,  Radiohead, our Bay Area favorites Waterstrider, and even a hint of Foals altogether. Zooni has been making their expanding mark on the scene this past year with a series of releases, the most recent prior to A Flat being Cotton Blue, another swathe of Radiohead like fermenting brilliance.
