Zines have long been a way for marginalized communities to record their stories and organize. Zine libraries are making sure those histories aren't forgotten.
At their roots, zines are a way of disseminating information and narratives that mainstream channels have rejected. They are a space for communities to come together to record and share their own stories, whether they’re about family, politics, culture, or anything in between.
LEEDS WEIRDO ZINE FEST 2019
So FB erased my friend’s event (it promotes queer, PoC and disabled people so do we even need to ask why?) So it would be great if people could share the heck out of it on here as well! https://www.facebook.com/events/407906363105996/?notif_t=plan_user_invited¬if_id=1549313635128781

RIP ZAPP
I just got some really shitty news. There used to be a REALLY AWESOME zine library here in Seattle called ZAPP. I used to volunteer there. It was housed at Hugo House, which does writing classes and readings and stuff--I've taken a couple of classes there. Maybe five years ago Hugo House kicked them out. All this time they've been saying they're still trying to find a new space and open again, and I've been really wanting them to, both so I could use the library and because I loved volunteering with them.
Well, they just sent out an email making it official that they're not looking for a new space anymore--all their zines are just going to the public library. Apparently the deal is they still want to be their own independent thing, but Hugo House still legally owns all the zines and they didn't want them to. I was already mad at Hugo House for kicking them out, but this is straight-up BULLSHIT. It's like when Conan went from NBC to TBS and NBC said he wasn't allowed to do any of his old characters anymore--"We don't want this thing anymore, but we're not going to let you have it even though it should rightfully be yours." The classes I've taken there have been really good, but I'm so mad at them I almost don't want to take another class there again. But there aren't really other places in town to take writing classes--the library has them sometimes, but the topics aren't as specific and interesting as Hugo House's, and it'll just be an afternoon instead of a couple of weeks or more. But yeh I am pissed.
I know it's good that the zines will still be at the public library--I am really happy about that at least. But I'm sure the library won't do as good a job cataloging them, and they (I think?) won't be collecting new ones. ZAPP had classes about making zines too and I'm sure they won't do that. And on a personal level I'm just really sad I won't be able to volunteer with them anymore, cos it was superfun. So yeh this is really fucking shitty.
