Subaru did his best to give you as much space as the locker allowed. His hands and shoulders were pressed against the wall, chin tilted up and to the side to allow you room to breathe. It looked like he was more afraid of you than the anomaly.
“Its okay, Suba.” You never used the nickname on him before and hoped it would distract him from whatever had him so flustered. He had already apologized twice when the two of you squeezed in the small space. He glanced at you, surprised. He attempted to relax his shoulders, still keeping as much distance as he could. Every inhale had your chests touching, and it was too hard to breathe in the locker for shallow breaths.
“Sorry.” He wasn’t even sure why he was apologizing anymore. You were too close for him to think straight, your smell sweeter than the flowers in Hotarubi. He swallowed, sure you heard him gulp. He glanced at you, quickly averted his gaze when you locked eyes.
You heard the anomaly pass by, and instinctually flinched into him. Your face was tucked into the juncture of his shoulder and neck. Sensing your fear, his timidness disappeared and he put his arms around you to protect you. You stayed huddled together until the anomaly passed. Subaru slowly leaned his head back to see if you were relaxing, but his arms stayed around you.
Intense longing pinned you in place. You became mesmerized by his tender gaze, noticing when his amethyst eyes glanced at your lips. He must have noticed the shift. He shyly looked away, loosening his embrace enough for you to push his arms away if you wanted.
You didn’t. You leaned closer, until your faces were nearly touching, and touched his jaw so he would turn his head to face you again. He couldn’t resist any longer and pressed a soft, hesitant kiss to your lips. You bit your lip after he pulled back, your smile all the encouragement he needed to give you another, hungrier, surer. He held you firmly, cupping your cheek and finding more solace in you than he had known in a long time.
Haku Kusanagi
Between the way you were pressed up against him, and the harmless ghosts leading away the more dangerous anomaly to ensure your safety, Haku was practically giddy. He took deep, slow breaths to keep himself and you calm, and to enjoy how nice you smelled. He leaned into you as much as he could without squishing you, hoping his desire for you wasn’t coming through too strong. Normally Zenji or Subaru were his chaperones, keeping him from being too blunt about his feelings and wants. He couldn’t help that you felt perfect in his arms, and he’d wanted to hold your hand again since he first guided you through Galaxy Express. He wanted much more, most of his thoughts sweet. Most.
Haku smiled to himself as he unwittingly nuzzled you, pulling your attention from the ghosts and anomalies to him, content as a cat in your arms. He was an expert on these creatures, and if he wasn’t alarmed, you had little reason to be either. You allowed yourself to relax, and sighed. Your breath fanned across his chest and neck, causing him to suppress a delightful shiver.
Haku nuzzled you again, closer to your nose so your lips were on the brink of touching. You knew he had a soft spot for you and caved, closing the minuscule distance to taste his lips for the first time. He pressed against you fully, deepening the kiss and making it known how thoroughly he enjoyed being close to you. He left you no room to shift away, so happy he finally got to kiss you that you would have to push him away to get him to stop.
Zenji Kotodama
You felt cramped in the small locker. It was just you and Zenji’s doll, which took up little space. He left it in your care, and you cradled the doll to keep it safe, worried something would happen to Zenji if it was damaged.
Zenji floated into the locker, partially inside so he wasn’t too close to you.
“Stay inside a little longer. The others are on their way.”
Zenji remained to keep watch over you. He made no move to take the doll back from you. In fact, he smiled at how you cradled it.
“Thank you for taking care of my brother. Even if he is teasing me for being in your arms when I cannot.” His words were meant to be jovial, but he couldn’t hide their melancholic edge. His hand hovered by your face, as if he rested his palm against the wall. His sight was beyond human’s or ghouls, and he could see you perfectly in the dark. His ghostly glow allowed you to see him just as easily, and his illumination made you less afraid.
You held the doll in one arm when you reached for Zenji’s face, moving as though you were caressing him. The air he occupied was colder, and you felt goosebumps dancing up your arm. You wanted to know if you could feel him on your lips. If you focused hard enough, maybe there could be some contact.
He drew a sharp breath when you leaned in. He was curious, wanting nothing more than to be able to touch, hug and kiss you, and researching ways he could grow strong enough to do so. Maybe the hope he felt in that moment would bring him one step closer. He drifted closer to your face, stopping when he passed through you a fraction. He lined his lips with yours as well as he could, and made a light kissing sound. What you did feel was his breath wash over you when he sighed and disappeared, longing for true contact but elated at your attempt. The doll shifted in your arms, kicking its feet happily.

໒꒱ ₊˚ thinking about … subaru, haku, zenji ,, and their classic shoujo cliches.
GENERIC ADVICE ?! subaru – subaru had been more in the dumps lately; even you could tell that much. he still wore the same smile, but his body language told another story. what more could you do than drop in and try to cheer up the glum captain?
yet no matter what games you played, how much tea you drank, or how many walks you took along the lake, it all amounted to nothing. he tried to look more upbeat for your sake, yet his eyes remained devoid of that certain spark. it almost became painful to be around him, his sighs growing longer by the day.
one restless night later, the cure to his misery finally hit you. why not simply ask him what was wrong and listen? it had been so obvious, why hadn’t you thought of it sooner?
eventually, you sat down and listened to his worries: how overworked he had become, the long nights spent on paperwork, the constant stream of students approaching him with their miniscule issues, and how he just wanted to curl up under his blankets and sleep off his incoming cold.
“why don’t you do that, then? subaru… you can ask people for help. you shouldn’t have to burden everything, even if you’re the captain.”
and the way he looked at you nearly stopped your heart. the dull eyes that gained a small glimmer of hope. the tiny twitch of his lip paired with his eyes closing, wrinkling in an airy smile.
you were so perfect, knowing exactly what to say. if only he had the confidence to admit that he wanted you there with him, your body warming his under the puffy blanket while the sound of pattering rain on the roof lulled the two of you into a deep slumber.
NO UMBRELLA ?! haku – hotarubi was a place of constant rain. everyone knew that, and everyone knew to bring an umbrella if they planned to visit. so how had the vice captain managed to forget one?
perhaps it was his rush to get to your “impromptu date” on time. perhaps it was because his mind was too full of the idea of inviting you back and sharing an umbrella with you on the walk home. perhaps it was the phantom pleasure of your shoulder brushing against his. perhaps, perhaps…
what he hadn’t accounted for was actually forgetting said umbrella. and you, not knowing you would be heading back with him, were also empty-handed. you exchanged a look, one exasperated and the other weary.
both of you could have gone to the campus store to buy one, but neither of you wanted to triple your steps today. instead, you mentioned the idea of, “maybe i should head back.”
his body reacted faster than his brain could process. he yanked off his jacket and raised it above your head, curling his back to shield you. his reassuring smile was enough to convince you to briskly walk back with him.
you ignored the blunt gazes of others, focusing instead on your hand resting on the vice captain’s bicep. your grip kept tugging his arm back toward you whenever it tilted just enough to let rain soak your shoulder. your attention stayed on his laughter, the shape of his lips when he shouted, “watch out!” right before you plunged your foot into a massive puddle. and, of course, the little knowing smile he gave you when you grimaced at him with your now drenched shoe.
STALKING ?! zenji – you’ve been feeling oh so scared recently. or, at least, that’s what you should be feeling. instead, you remain blissfully unaware of a certain ghost trailing your every move.
during each lecture, your gaze passes straight through zenji’s hovering form as you write down useless notes. you never once suspect that a ghost is an inch away from you, examining every pore and blemish on your face with a lovesick swoon.
during lunch, his hand sweeps across a page as he desperately searches for words that can capture even a fraction of your beauty. no language can compare to you, and he is cursed to try, over and over, to confine you to sentences that never do you justice.
being a ghost may be torture, but it comes with its perks. he can’t use a camera to frame your wonder, but he can sit upon your desk and paint your likeness in perfect detail.
he’s had enough time to memorize your favorite foods, the exact hue of your eyes in every kind of lighting, and even the number of moles on your body. he wrote a song about them too. it’s surprisingly beautiful—so beautiful, in fact, that he has played it for you at night beneath your window.
nights like that are hell for you. you’ll be in a deep slumber only to be dragged awake by some unknown serenader, only to discover it’s the floating biwa on the campus. you slam the window shut, and you swear you hear it strum a single sour note in shock.
when luca and kaito finally comment on how sleep-deprived you look, that’s when you demand haku do something. he promises to get rid of it or at least talk to it. there’s a long pause… and then a blessed week of uninterrupted sleep.
then it starts again, each night with a brand new melody.
haku was right after all! he did have to take a week off just to let your absence marinate and give him new ideas.
Angst fic where the mc finally learns something vital yet so devastating about zenji and jiro's past that it causes her to have to choose one of them to stand with if she doesn't want to lose both of them . its the first time she's noticed jiro isn't so indifferent about a situation. and of course....zenji understands when, if, or why she chooses his little brother. Ugh
foursome with the hotarubi boys but since zenji can’t actually touch he is whispering praises into your ear as suba thrusts into you with trembling hips and eyes glued to your face as you have haku’s cock in your mouth with teary eyes
I'm back! You said to remind me of the request and here I am, I wanted a story where the MC despairs about the curse, to the point where he even stops going on quests, I leave it to you to decide whether the ending is good or bad, whatever you want🙏
exhausted w/ zenji kotodama
note: here you go! i may have tweaked it a little bit and added zenji since you didn't specify if you wanted something with the ghouls or not, hope that's okay!
contains: possible ooc (first time writing for zenji), some body horror, spoilers up to episode 18, hurt/comfort, suicidal thoughts...
You were tired.
Tired of seeing things you shouldn't have to, of making others risk their lives for your safety, of trying to keep yourself positive despite every failure.
You kept going and going, forcing your aching body to stand up and go ahead with another day. Classes, doing tasks for faculty members or some of the ghouls, spending your time in the library trying to search for new information if there wasn't a mission, going back to bed without having made any progress... Rinse and repeat.
Now you were looking at the sky, elbows on the windowsill as the cool breeze caressed your hair.
"My dear, you shouldn't lean forward too much."
The unexpected voice almost made you slip, an ghostly arm instinctively shooting forward in front of you as if to stop your fall, but you managed to grab onto the ledge. The man floating by your side sighed in relief.
"See? As alluring as the night sky might be, it's very dangerous to let yourself be blinded by its beauty."
You try to give him the best smile you can. "Yeah, sorry, I didn't notice I was leaning so much."
The thoughts of your impending doom were too distracting, after all. So haunting that sometimes you were sure you could feel the tattoo on your back slowly grow bigger and bigger.
Just by seeing Zenji's soft expression, you prepare yourself for what you knows will follow.
"... Everyone has been quite worried about you, dear."
Of course they would be, at least those who actually seemed to care about your well-being. You hadn't talked to anyone these last few days since the Star Festival ended, not even Kaito or Luca, who only caught a brief glimpse of you during classes.
You didn't respond to any texts, be it from the ghouls who demanded something from you, others who tried to invite you over, or even those that mentioned possible details for a mission.
The disappointment you felt after seeing another chance to free yourself from the curse vanish before your eyes was... not easy to deal with.
It was just so tiring to keep hoping only to be let down time and time again: the Genesis, Yuri's medicine, Edward's attempt at making you a vampire, the Sheepdog, Shi San Long... and now, the Sky King. Some of them might have worked, if only to give you a few more months to live, but others meant sacrificing your humanity, which was what you wanted to maintain in the first place.
With every failure, you felt more and more like the Kyklos was laughing at you, watching with that giant eye you couldn't forget. Waiting in her corner for flowers to sprout from under your skin, to watch your head burst in a colorful bouquet with an eye just like hers, vines intertwining with your veins, a horrible, bloody smile on what remained of your face...
Such vision followed you every night when you closed your eyes, making you wonder if maybe it would be better to end your life before letting that despicable anomaly take over. Darwick would make sure you wouldn't survive if the curse took you, either way.
"My dear?"
Your thoughts were interrupted by a worried voice and a cold feeling against your cheek. Zenji's hand retreated, his red eyes filled with understanding and pain. Of course, he was always so empathetic, he likely had an idea of what you've been thinking about.
"I understand the despair of not knowing if you'll be able to reach your goal. You're carrying such a heavy burden..." One of his hands hovers over one of your own. There is no touch, no warmth, no physical comfort, it's akin to a breeze. "But, remember that you are not alone."
"... I don't want them to risk their lives for me anymore." You never did, but now even more so. "It's just... failure after failure. What if one of them gets hurt trying to protect me, only for me to still turn into the Kyklos?"
"That is their choice." The firmness in his voice disconcerts you for a moment but, as you glance back at him, his red eyes are still soft. "You can't tell them not to protect their beloved friend. They're very much aware of the possibilities."
You stay quiet. No words come out of your mouth, nor do sentences form in your head. You're tired, exhausted, but know that Zenji's right, you can't decide for them, and thanks to Edward everyone knew you'd become an anomaly when your time was up. Nothing was hidden from your friends.
The two of you spend some time just watching the stars, the only sound being that of the ghost's gentle humming by your side. It's calming, a lullaby to wish you the sweetest dreams and good luck.

✷ stay with me, hold my hand. There's no need to be brave | 856 | cw: Zenji x f!reader, mentions of death, ZENJI REAL NAME SPOILER!
🎧 I will - Mitski
Beep. Beep. Beep
The sound of a repeating beat coming from the monitor echoed across the surgery room. As you stood there, eyes staring at the flat line, indicating that the patient was dead.
Another failed surgery.
“Patient died at 3:09 am. Cause of death; perioperative mortality.”
Your coworkers shot you an empathetic look. One of them patted your shoulder as an attempt to comfort you. But you stood there, your eyes never leaving the ECG monitor with a clenched fist that your hand turned white.
You hate death. You always do.
The word alone sends you through spiralling emotions and unwanted memories creeping back to you as you try your best to push it away. But the more you push it away, the more it haunts you till your sleep.
Sometimes, you think, maybe it's karma that's catching up to you. After you failed to save a person and watch them die in your very eyes─who has relied on you and had high hopes of getting saved and making it out of the hospital alive. the family and friends who’re waiting for them outside the operating room─clinging on to their very last hope, only for it to be crushed by heartbreaking news.
You sat outside the operating room after changing out of your scrubs. From the distance, you can hear the muffled sobs from the family of the patient you just lost. It made your heart twist and ache in the worst way.
‘Im sorry’ was the only silent words that you can offer for the grieving family.
Your coworker noticed your defeated self. He knew you've always been sensitive to the death of your patients─he knew that your weighing feelings makes it hard for you to recover from your trauma.
Bending his upper body a little bit, he hugged you and rubbed circles on your back,”it's okay, it's not your fault. The infection was unstoppable anyway… so don't beat yourself up to it” he reassured before taking his leave.
All of your pent up emotions come crashing down, as tears fall in your hands that's muffling your sobs. It hurts. Everything hurts. Your heart feels heavy─it's grieving─at times like this, you would always seek comfort from someone. Someone who could ease and carry the heavy weight of your feelings.
But that someone simply doesn't exist anymore. So, whose arms are you going to run now?
Your sobbing and gasps filled the hallway of the hospital. The wind feels nothing but a cold embrace to your skin. As if no one's there for you but only yourself.
Suddenly, you heard a strum of biwa playing.
Your eyes widen at the familiarity of the tune, as the vivid imagery you wanted to push away slowly comes back.

The sound of the rain and the strumming of biwa brings you a sense of comfort. feeling your mind enter in its peaceful state as you lay your head on your lovers’ lap, who's humming a lullaby.
“Feeling better now my dear?” Taro looked down at your serene state, his warm hands engulfing yours. Giving it a slight grip to reassure you that he's here with you. resting with you in his chamber─the place you always run to when you need peace of mind.
“Mhm” you hummed, nuzzling your cheeks against his touch on your cheeks, enjoying the warmth it's giving aside from the cold wind.
“can you.. hold me like this until I fall asleep?” you murmured, glancing at Taro whose eyes are already gazing at you with a curled smile.
“Of course, doll. I'll hold your hand and chase away the bad dreams!” He exclaimed, earning a chuckle from you, shaking your head in amusement.
“You're turning into a bad dream hunter now? Don't leave me alone here in the physical world.”
Taro shook his head, using his other hand to play with your hair.
“Wouldn't dream of doing that, dear.”

“Why must you come back now?” you muttered, voice raspy due to crying.
After reminiscing about your past lover, you stared at the white ceiling. In attempts to push the tears back into your eyes. Your eyes hurt, you're not in a mood to cry anymore─not after you spent hours weeping alone until you feel like you can't cry anymore.
Your heart yearned, crave for his touch again. To see him again even if it's just his faint spirit.
But you know you can't see him anymore. He's gone for a year─there's no hope of being with him again.
You felt something touch your hand, you looked down to see a doll with dark purple hair, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing that looks similar to what Taro wears.
Its eyes bore to you, despite its emptiness, you felt a sense of comfort and warmth through it.
The same feeling you get when you're with him.
Pursing your lips into a thin line, you gritted your teeth as you held the doll in your arms, using it to muffle your anguish cry. and before you know it, you slowly drifted to sleep, letting the darkness fill your vision.
You faintly sense what feels like someone clasping your hand, sending you to deep sleep, where joyful memories awaits for you.

He shouldn’t be doing this, and yet he couldn’t help it. It had been a few days since he accidentally phased through your wall in the middle of you changing. Zenji had caught sight of you in your undergarments, before he quickly left with a small ‘sorry.’
Even though Zenji had tried to forget what he saw, it kept popping up in his mind. That’s when he felt his pants tightened, and he decided to do it.
He pulled his dick out of his pants and started stroking. His mind wandered to the sight he saw, your exposed skin and those undergarments you wore. His hand moved faster as he thought of you. He wished it was you stroking him instead of himself.
He felt it build up, his thoughts increased. His speed picked up. Finally he released into his hand.
Zenji felt guilty about using your image for something like this. Perhaps one day he’d apologize to you directly.
I’m a new follower haha, I am super happy that you are taking requests! I love the students from hotarubi so much!! I am also a hotarubian (at least according to the house sorting in the early game). Would you mind writing a soulmate AU for the hotarubi characters? Thanks a lot!!!
Soulmate AU with the Hotarubi boys.
I don't mind at all! This was my first time doing a soulmate au, so I hope it turned out good. I was also sorted into Hotarubi, and I love all of them(though Subaru's my favorite). I didn't really change anything except for the soulmate part, so I did skip around a bit.
Each boy has a different soulmate prompt for variety. I’ll label the ones I used. I decided to use the prologue for Haku, since that's when we meet him.
Spoilers for the Hotarubi chapter
Subaru: Same markings
You had always wanted to find your soulmate. The same person that shares the mark you have on your skin.
Despite your best efforts, you haven't found them yet.
Years passed on, and you just decided to give up.
In the end, you ended up forgetting about your soulmate. Perhaps you’d find them sooner rather than later.
You were on an assignment from Darkwick to inspect Hotarubi. And you were going to meet the Captain.
He came in and knelt before you, and introduced himself. However you caught a glimpse at the mark on his hand, one that matched yours.
“It's you,” you said, confusing both Haru and Subaru.
“What?” Subaru asked.
“The mark on your hand. It's the same as mine.”
You showed him your hand. His eyes widened at the sight.
“So you’re my soulmate.”
Haku: First word said to each other
“All right. Let's get out of here for starters.” Were the words written on your arm.
You had often questioned them, like why were those the first words your soulmate said to you?
Then you got saved from an anomaly, and almost got thrown out of the train by the boy who saved you. Fortunately you were saved by another boy.
“All right. Let's get out of here for starters,” he said. You tried to say something, but the boy played his flute and you fell asleep.
When you woke up, the train was back to normal.
“Sorry, but I’m still here,” the boy said, watching you from the seat beside you.
“Huh? Aha-” You nearly fell to the ground due to your injured leg.
“Whoops, looks like we injured a civilian.”
“Wait a second,” you yell. The boy looks up.
“What is it?” He asks.
“You're my soulmate,” you exclaim, showing him your arm. The boy looks down at his arm.
“Well, what do you know,” he mutters.
Zenji: Red Strings
You had often stared at the red string wrapped around your pinky.
You wondered what your soulmate was like, and how you would meet.
But something happened. One day, a year before you had come to Darkwick, your string turned black, and was cut.
You were heartbroken. Why did this happen? Did something happen to your soulmate?
Then after working on a mission, Haku took you and Subaru to the teahouse, and revealed the third ghoul in Hotarubi.
“Are you Zenji?” You asked the boy now in front of you. He seemed ecstatic that you could see him.
“You can see me, my dear?” He asked. And when you nod, he grabs your hand in delight.
Then the dead string that you had on your pinky reacted. It reached out to connect to the dead string on Zenji’s finger.
“You’re-” you started, before you were interrupted by the happy crying of Zenji.
