Axel sighed as he and Domino entered the cafe, hoping to get some caffeine in them after a hard day of training from Colossus and that idiot, Wade.
âI'd much prefer energy drinks.â Axel muttered as he and Domino stepped in line and waited to be served.
âYeah, well, Xavier said coffee might be better.â Domino shrugged.
Axel sighed and rubbed his tired eyes. He was kind of hoping to go back to his place and get some sleep before Colossus made them go hard again with even more training.
âAxel?â
The X-Force member turned at the mention of his name and his green eyes widened as he saw the familiar girl standing before him.
He remembered her. He had not seen her in six years.
Six painful years.
Six years of feeling like a complete shithead and guilty. Incredibly guilty.
And all those memories and feelings came flooding back.
â(Y/N).â he croaked. He cleared his throat.
âLong time no see, huh?â
âYeah, I guess so.â he said, weakly.
He remembered walking with her along a quiet sunny beach. He'd been younger then and also very naĂŻve about his future and also with himself. She had been so perfect in the summer sun. The sun rays radiating her skin in a beautiful haze.
Until...
They'd been talking. About what Axel didn't know but they'd been talking and then...
He'd began to feel weird. Something was not right.
âAxel? Sweetie, you okay?â
His hand flew to his mouth. His stomach was doing somersaults. Why not? Why was he going to vomit at this fucking moment?!
âAxel,â she said, staying loyally by his side. âCome on, babe. Let's sit you down, okay?â
âNo.â he said as the sickening feeling wore off. âIt's okay. I'm fine.â
âYou sure? You look pale.â
He huffed a small laugh. âNo more than usual.â
She smiled, too.
You couldn't believe your luck. Or anything really. He was standing right before you. Six years. Where had the time gone?
Was he still upset? Hurt by what had happened?
Surely not. Although, not seeing him for less than half a dozen years and him running in panic would just about do that.
You smiled at him.
Even though there were some things about him that had changed, he still looked the same as he had done since you'd last seen him.
Still ruggedly handsome. Shy and dorky.
Your eyes darted to the older girl next to him.
âUm,â you squeaked, suddenly becoming a little embarrassed. âI'm...am I interrupting something?â
âOh, no. We were just getting something to drink. Um, (Y/N), this is Domino or Neena. She's a recruit like me and, Dom, this is (Y/N).â
âAn old girlfriend, I presume.â Domino smirked. It didn't sound like a question.
â...Yes.â Axel blushed as you giggled.
âWell,â she said, pushing Axel move towards you. âI'll leave you to it.â
And with that she left. Axel looked at his colleague, aghast before slinking over to you. You lead him to your table.
âSo,â he started.
âSo,â you echoed, teasing him.
A silence fell between you two. Axel was not meeting your gaze. It seemed as though he was still feeling guilty after all these years.
âAxel.â you began. âI...you know, I don't blame you.â
He looked at you, bewildered. âSure, you do.â
You reached out to him, unknowingly with that arm. Your touch made him tense up and glance warily down at your arm. The sleeve of your thin shawl had crept up revealing to him just what he had done to you.
âI don't.â you said, breaking the silence. âYou didn't know that was going to happen. Nobody did.â
â(Y/N).â he whined. âI burned you. Look at this. How can you forgive me for what I've done to you?â
You had not expected it. You had sat him down after he had felt a little sick and just sat a few feet from the rolling tide and stared at the sunset. You were cuddled up to him, with his arm around you and just enjoying the comfortable silence and just being close.
Then it hit him again. The nausea.
He started retching. You were calling out to him, trying to get him to respond and calm himself. And then you reached your arm out to his shoulder to soothe him, and Axel's mouth opened and something clear fell from his mouth and splattered on your arm. It wasn't vomit. It was searing. Agonising.
You screamed in agony as you flung yourself away from him. You cried out, tears running down your face. Axel was calling to you...you think. You clutched your bicep, the only part that wasn't affected by...whatever had come out of Axel's mouth. The skin was becoming callous, eating away at the flesh.
What the fuck had just happened?
When you looked round to ask Axel to call an ambulance, you saw him running away, kicking up the sand as he ran.
And you never saw him again, but now you were determined to make amends and not let him go.
âBecause I was never one to hold grudges.â you said, simply. âAnd I still don't.â
He stared at you, amazed at your forgiveness and your...understanding. âI'm sorry.â
âDon't be.â you said, stroking his tattooed arm. âBesides, I like to think of it as something to remember you by.â
âDon't say that. That really doesn't help.â
âSorry but it has. Every time I see it, I'm reminded of how you were the one good thing in my life. I've missed you, Axel.â
â...I don't go by the name, now. Not all the time.â
âOh?â
âYeah. I call myself, Zeitgeist.â
âWow. I like. So, are you part of some kind of Area 51 sch-tick or...?â
âYou ever heard of the X-Men?â
âI think so. Is it like the Avengers?â
âProbably. Well, they have a...kind of programme thing for people like me. Mutants.â
âMutants? That sounds a little harsh.â
Axel shrugged.
âSo, now that you've told me, are you going to kill me, so I don't blab.â
Axel smiled and he clasped his hand in yours. âI would never do that to you.â
You smiled back at him.
âI've missed you.â
âYeah...I missed you, too.â
âNice tats, by the way.â
âThanks. I'm thinking of getting another.â
âYeah? Cool. And what's that above your top lip, pubic hair?â
Axel barked a laugh.
âPuberty hit ya hard, didn't it?â you joked.
âMy god. You've not changed, (Y/N).â
âNeither have you. Mutant powers, tattoos and pubic hair moustaches aside.â
âDo you want to grab another coffee sometime?âÂ
âYeah, I would. Um, how about Sunday?â
âYeah, if all goes well.â
âGood. Cause we have a lot to catch up on.â
âWe do.â
Tentatively, he pulled your sleeve back, showing the cracked and old burnt skin that had scabbed your arm. You could see that he was still shaken up by it all but you didn't say anything.
You raised your free hand to his cheek and stroked the skin there with your thumb. He looked at you with watery eyes. Regret and remorse in his eyes. But he didn't need to say it. You didn't even need to voice your forgiveness again. You were thankful that he was back in your life.
âWant me to leave you two alone?â Domino smirked.

Havenât written a reader-insert in a long while but I finally sat down and watched Deadpool 2, fell in love with this asshole, and 800 words later, here we are.
Totally disregards a certain wood chipper-related mishap, because you canât make me fall for a character and then kill him off two minutes later.Â
Let me know what you guys think and if youâd be interested in seeing more!
You're fucking around on your phone, fighting lethargy with mindless entertainment when you hear the front door creak.
You hide a sleepy grin in the pillow you've propped your head on, scrolling through another cluttered social media feed without really seeing any of it while you listen to the familiar thud of heavy boots hitting the carpet, muffled grumbling broken by a yawn, the squeak of the bedroom door -
"Oof." You wheeze as a heavy weight settles across your back, your phone falling from slack fingers. "Axe," you half-groan, half-laugh, wiggling futilely beneath his body. "Gettof."
Axel grunts, not budging an inch. Stubborn asshole.
You buck your hips, though you're honestly not trying very hard to dislodge him. He's not even that heavy, though the long, lanky length of his body covers yours completely. He smells like ink and sweat and faintly of smoke - cigarette smoke, from whichever of his clients indulge in the habit. The scent makes your nose wrinkle, but you prefer it to the acrid stench of fire and blood and soot that had coated him after his first (and last) attempt at heroism.
It's been months since the night he'd staggered in bruised and singed around the edges but otherwise whole, and in the privacy of your own mind, where you've run through one disastrous scenario after another, versions of that night where Axe never came home at all, you're grateful for every reminder that he's still in one piece. Â
"You're heavy," you huff, just to be a little shit, anyway.
"Deal with it," Axel huffs right back, long arms wiggling between you and the mattress to wrap around your waist. His cheek lolls against the ball of your shoulder, his breath fanning against the nape of your neck. No mouthguard, then. You prefer it that way, always have. You like the look on his face when you sneak a kiss to the corner of his mouth, the way he'll glare, half-scolding and half-heated. Reckless, he'll call you, slipping his mouthguard back into place with a pointed look.
Says the guy who tossed himself out of a plane.
"At least let me turn over," you grumble, exasperated.
A brush of lips through the thin cotton of your sleep shirt. You shiver, but not from fear. Never from fear.
"No oneâs stoppin' you, sweetheart," he says, voice low and tinged with amusement.
It takes some effort, but you manage to wriggle onto your back beneath Axel's dead weight, huffing in annoyance when all you get for your troubles is a pair of dancing eyes above a crooked smirk.
"Dick."
Axel's lips twitch. It really is a damn shame you can't kiss them. Well, you could, technically speaking, if you felt like risking a nasty acid burn. It'd almost be worth it, you think longingly, even as you watch them curl into a self-satisfied smile.
"Such a mouth on you," Axel murmurs, tapping an ink-stained finger against your lips. You make a grab for his hand, curling your fingers through his and using the loose grip to drag his palm to your mouth.
You love Axel's hands, have spent more time than you can measure just admiring them. You've been caught, too, more than once, though at this point you've lost all shame about it. They deserve to be admired: every callus, each long, slender finger, every blunt, ink-stained nail and knuckle.
You love to watch them work, wielding needle and ink with a dexterity that never fails to remind you of a dance, graceful and sure. Youâll never tell Axe that, of course, knowing heâd only scoff or laugh at the sentiment, but itâs true nonetheless.
You love watching them work on you, too, whether it's in pursuit of winding you up or simply pulling you close. Axel tends to do both as often as he can.
He enjoys it â touching you. Softly, firmly, lightly. Harder, when desperation grips you both. Touch like that carries a lot of weight behind it when kissing is off the table.
Not that that's ever stopped you. You might have to avoid his mouth, but there's nothing preventing you from pressing your own soft, unhurried kisses to Axel's palm, across the ridge of his knuckles, against the pads of his fingertips.
You're no superhero, but as you watch Axel's eyes turn liquid and dark, his Adam's apple bobbing in a rough swallow, you wonder if this is what it feels like, having a power that no one else in the world possesses and knowing exactly how to use it.
Only for good, of course. Only for this: Axel's fingers twitching against your cheek, his eyelids falling heavily over dark, hungry eyes, lips parting around the syllables of your name -
You grin against the warmth of his palm, lips dragging along his skin and blood fizzing as he shudders.
Yeah, there's nothing in the world as good as this.
(for you, anon! thank you for the suggestion! I apologize for taking so long in getting this up, iâm working two jobs this summer and it eats up most of my free time. i finished this weeks ago, but just now sat down to edit it. chapter 2 is in the works, thanks for you patience :) )
Axel was sprawled lazily over one of the many couches that sat in the X-Mansionâs common area, tuning in and out of the long talk Wade was currently giving the team. Domino kept trying to tell him to wrap it up, but Wade would shoo her away and continue rambling, earning exasperated sighs from the other members. Itâs no wonder Cable never wanted to come to these meetings. This place would be a fiery pile of ash by now due to the time-travelerâs short temper and distaste for Wadeâs antics. Axelâs found his eyes wander to you, the newest member of the X-Force crew. He watched as you tried your best to stifle a giggle as Wade began flailing his arms to emphasize whatever point he was trying to make with this announcement. He watched as you put a hand over your mouth to hide your grin. A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. You had only been here for a day and you were already getting the full experience of Wadeâs ridiculous pep talks and the antics that went on in the mansion. Axel didnât know much about you, as it was technically your first day on the team, so he still hadnât gotten the chance to introduce himself. He had heard from other members of the Force that you had the ability to transform your arms and legs into tentacle-like tendrils. He hadnât seen a demonstration yet, but was sure it was avant garde like the rest of abilities held by his team members. That would definitely make missions more interesting. He wondered if you had chosen a name for yourself yet.Â
âYo, Barf Boy, Iâm talking to you!â Wadeâs voice roused Axel from his thoughts. He turned his gaze to Wade, who now had friendly arm around you. âYouâre in charge of the new kid around here.â Axel sat up from his position on the couch.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â he asked. âIâm no babysitter.â Wade laughed obnoxiously.Â
âWell, now you are!â he said enthusiastically. âStarting today, youâre Y/Nâs mentor! Meeting adjourned.â The team filed out of the room before Axel could even open his mouth in protest, leaving you and him to stand there together in stunned silence. What the hell had he just been thrown into?
Axel stood on the training grounds watching you spar with Domino. He observed that you were quick on your feet and incredibly skilled in combat already. You hadnât even used your ability yet. You ended the spar quickly, gently pinning Domino down. She let out a hearty laugh.
âDamn, newbie, you know what youâre doing!â You stood up and held out a hand to help her up, which she accepted. Domino dusted herself off and motioned to Axel. âYour turn!â Axel was reluctant to take on the role of mentor, but it didnât look like he had much of a choice in the matter. Everyone else was too busy with their own duties or missions to be helping a new trainee get her bearings for hours each day, so he was their best bet. Axel walked over to where you were standing and faced you.Â
âReady?â he asked. The nod you gave him in return signaled the beginning of the spar. Axel threw a swift punch to your left, which you dodged without hesitation. Your fist barely grazed his cheek as he avoided the punch you hurled back at him. Axel grinned. âNot bad, but letâs see that power of yours.â You shook your head.Â
âI donât want to use it unless I have to.â you said. âItâs weird and kinda gross, if Iâm being honest.â Axel laughed.
âWell, sweetheart, I spit up acidic vomit, so I think weâre both a little gross and weird.â Your eyes widened as he sucker punched you in the gut, causing you to stumble backwards. âNow, letâs see it.â The spar continued on with punches and kicks being thrown in all different directions, but you still refused to use your ability, no matter how many taunts Axel threw your way. He finally managed to kick your legs out from under you and you crumpled to the ground. Axel pinned you on your back, your faces inches apart from each other.Â
âPretty good, sweetheart, but it looks like you still need some wor-.â Axelâs sentence was cut off by one of your arms shapeshifting into a tentacle and wrapping around his torso. He could only watch helplessly as you lifted him off of you and flipped him around so you were now straddling him on the ground instead. All he could do was stare back up at you, silence falling over the both of you as his gaze met your E/C colored eyes. He must have looked visibly stunned, because you began to giggle.
âI told you I didnât want to use it!â you said sheepishly, slowly getting up off of him and offering your hand to help him up. Axel begrudgingly took it. Beaten by his own student on the first day, how ridiculous. He watched as Domino ran over to congratulate you on your victory, your face lighting up in a smile. After Domino was finished gushing over you, you approached him and held out your hand to shake his own.
âIâm really excited to learn from you, Axel.â you said. Axel shook your hand, feeling how firm your grip was. You were determined. He could already tell this was going to be one hell of a ride.
Everyday afterwards, Axel would train with you on the X-Mansion grounds. He noticed you were improving rapidly with each session and you took his feedback seriously, something he wasnât expecting. He had helped you condition and strengthen your arms and legs so you could lift heavier objects with your tentacles and have more stamina when using your ability. You had even received a specially designed battle outfit for missions that accommodate your tendrils in a way that wouldnât destroy what you were wearing in the process. Wade would come observe you on occasion and gush about how well you were doing, as well as propose to work on a move where you would catapult him and the other Force members into enemies by hurling them around with your tentacles. Axel shut that plan down before it could go any further, much to you and Wadeâs dismay.Â
Axel would never say it out loud, but he secretly loved being your mentor. He surprised even himself in thinking this. You were always so enthusiastic about learning new strategies and moves, as well as a fast learner. You proved to be a worthy opponent and Axel was never bored when sparring with you or bitter when he lost to you afterwards. The two of you spent several hours out of the day together and it honestly felt like he was hanging out with someone he had known for years. He wasnât one for close, meaningful relationships and considered himself to be closed off, especially when it came to women. There were reasons for this, of course, but he didnât want to relive that now. He was always so surprised with how genuinely kind and understanding you were, as you were always asking him if he was okay after a particularly rough training session even though you were pretty beat up yourself. He hadnât noticed it at first, but he definitely acted differently around you. He was often hyper-aware of what you or what he was doing. He would feel an unwanted twinge of jealousy when he saw Wade put an arm around on your shoulder when talking to yu or when you laughed at something he said. It felt like Axel had just completely forgotten how to act around you, no matter how hard he tried to push his feelings back down where they came from. When the two of you brushed hands by accident when putting away equipment after a training session, his skin practically lit up in flames. He had hurried out of the storage room without word, leaving you confused. Training with you had become difficult as well, since it involved close contact. Axel would toss and turn at night, his mind racing with these strange thoughts and feelings. He was never the type to become attached, so this was a first. How was he supposed to deal with this? He couldnât avoid you, you were his student for the time being and that wouldnât work, period. He could have Domino or someone else from the Force take the reins and train you instead, but you were so close to being finished that it almost didnât seem worth it. The best solution was to attempt to create some distance after you were done training with him and you had gone on your first official mission. This seemed like the most logical solution, for now, at least. He would start to further the gap between the two of you, beginning tomorrow.

Summary:Â Axel canât stop himself from falling for the girl heâs been told to protect, despite trying his absolute hardest not to.
A/Nâs: Guess who jumped on the Bill Skarsgard train and immediately fell in love with a character that we barely know anything about? This dumbass! Anyways, I started writing this fic and planning it out before Deadpool 2 had come out, so its not at all cannon complicit and due to my lack of knowledge about the plot or even Axel himself, its probably more of an AU. I was also thinking about doing a fluffier part 2. Would anyone be interested in that? Also, I havenât posted anything knew since October so, sorry about that! Requests are still open at the moment if anyone would like to send anything in, though please make sure to read my request rules first!
Masterlist & Request Rules
You arenât sure how to process what youâre hearing. And to be honest you already werenât quite sure what to think when you had opened your front door to the two people standing in front of you now. They were both a bit strange, this girl with her pixie cut and dark lipstick stained scowl and the tall man covered in tattoos. They might have been the ones coming to you, but that didnât seem to help with there standoffishness. Nor did the fact that what they were telling you was absolutely insane and horrifying. They both maintain straight, unchanged faces as they tell you that a man who had become interested in you was a complete psychopath and that you might be in danger because of it. Neither of them even tried to comfort you as they told you the man youâd come to mainly just come to know as a good tipper when he came in to the diner where you worked at was actually a very dangerous criminal.
Youâre quick to slam the door to your apartment in their faces, assuming they were both out of their minds. You couldnât seem to stop thinking about what all they had just told you as you locked every lock on your door before moving to sit on your couch. And more specifically about how it didnât actually seem completely out of the realm of possibility. You had always gotten a weird vibe from this man, especially after noticing how his knuckles were often all cut up, as if he spent a lot of his time punching something, or someone. About how it would explain some of the weird stuff that had happened lately, like how you had found a bouquet of your favorite flowers randomly on your doorstep on a couple of different occasions or why he was always staring at you. It would explain why he seemed to only come in when you were working, even though he shouldnât have any way of knowing your schedule and why he was always so rude to any of the men who worked with you, and only the men. And of course, it would explain the car with the dark windows that you kept seeing everywhere you went.
In fact, the more you thought about it the more it actually made sense that he could be exactly what they had told you he was. And the more you thought about the possibility of him actually being what they had said, being some sort of vicious mob enforcer, the more nervous and paranoid you became. You hadnât even realized how late it had gotten, you were so caught up in your thoughts. At this point your heart seemed to be trying to beat its way out of your chest and your hands were shaking so bad that you could barely grab your keys off of the hook by your door without dropping them. Your mind feels so scattered and you arenât even thinking through anything you were doing at this point. You donât know where youâre going, and you had absolutely no idea what to do next. You just knew that you needed to get out of your small, constraining apartment.
Though in the end, you didnât need to think through it much longer, because you didnât even make it fully out of your entryway before noticing the tall man, alone this time, who was now sitting against the wall across from your apartment. Heâs quick to hold his hands out in front of himself in a passive gesture when he notices the worried look placed on your face due to his presence, though you are quick to try to hide the emotion, not wanting to show this strange man any weakness. You take a deep breath before forcing yourself to speak, âW-What are you still doing here?â
He slowly pulls his large body up into a standing position before answering your question, âSomeone has to be here to make sure you donât get hurt, whether you believe us about your situation or not.â
Something about the way he says it throws you off. The monotone voice he uses and the relaxed way he is leaning his shoulder against the wall behind him makes it seem as if he couldnât give less of a shit about you or whether or not youâre ok. Like this is nothing more than a job to him. It throws you off enough that you donât make any move to stop him when he pushes past you and makes his way into your small apartment.
Your quick to pull yourself out of your daze though and cautiously follow him inside, though you make sure to stand close enough to the door to make a quick exit, just in case it comes to that.
âCan you prove it?â You try to keep your voice steady this time, not wanting him to know just how truly terrified you actually are. He takes a moment to look around before answering you. You watch him carefully as his eyes wander around the brightly lit apartment, taking in your large bookshelf and the photos of your friends and family that decorate the small place before allowing his eyes to wander over to you.
âI can,â he starts, his eyes staring straight into yours, an almost hypnotizing glow to them, âBut, I donât think a sweet girl like youâs gonna like whatâs on the photos I have, so how bout you let me actually fully explain whatâs going on and then you can decide whether or not you want to see them?â
He words it like itâs a question, like heâs giving you the choice, but the way he says it and the look heâs giving you say otherwise. So, instead of replying you just stand there, staring at him and raising your eyebrows, the closest heâs gonna get to an actual response from you. The corner of his mouth quirks up a little at your response as he walks towards your couch and sits down, making himself at home. You scoff when he gestures to the seat next to him, which gains an eye roll from him.
âIf I wanted to hurt you, I would of already and that weak door wouldnât have stopped me from getting in here. Now please, sit?â His first sentence is rough and cocky, which seems to just be his general vibe, but when he asks you to sit itâs gentler, more calming the agitating. After a moment of hesitation, you move from your spot near the door and sit on the far end of the couch from him. He nods at this before turning his eyes up towards the ceiling, trying to find the right words for what he is about to say.
âItâs not a large gang,â He starts, still hesitant, âbut they have some power behind them and a very anti-mutant agenda. Thatâs why we started paying attention to them.â His jaw clenches as he says this, though heâs thrown off when a chuckle escapes your lips, lips that heâs already had a hard time keeping his eyes off of if heâs being honest with himself.
Youâre about to explain when he starts speaking again, âWhich is why youâre important. From what weâve heard, their doing experiments on some missing mutants, most of them homeless kids theyâve picked off the street. And this guy whoâs interested in you clearly doesnât know about your mutation, Iâd assume?â
Youâre not able to keep the shock from your face when he says this. You didnât how he knew about that and it worries you. Youâve tried so hard to keep it a secret. He waits a moment for you to process what heâs said before speaking again. He explains how a friend of yours had gone to his group for help after figuring out who the man from the diner â Lenny, he calls him â was. He tells her that while the not so casual stalking was already bad enough, him finding out about your powers could be worse.
At this point you have began to shake  even worse than you had been earlier.  He must have notice this too because he leans towards you slightly before saying in a gentle voice, âItâs gonna be ok though. Weâre close to getting him anyways and until then, Iâm gonna keep you safe.â
He seems to soften just slightly when he says this, though heâs quick to hide it. You donât even know where to begin with the questions you have at this point. You donât know whether you should ask about his plan for keeping you safe or why this group of his cares about some random mutant girl who can barely make ends meet or even who his group was, so instead you ask the question that just keeps clawing its way to the front of you mind, hoping it doesnât sound too rude, âWhy you?â
He looks away when you ask this, trying to ignore the fact that he is hurt by some random girl he doesnât even know. You start talking again before he can answer, already feeling bad, âNot that I donât appreciate it! I do! Itâs just that-â You stop for a second trying to find the right words, âThat I donât get why you, your group would want to help me. Iâm not important or anything. And you, well honestly you donât really seem to care all that much.â
He fails to keep himself from staring at your lips when you start to bite them, but he pulls himself out of it quickly and answers you, âWe canât exactly just sit by and let an innocent girl get hurt and I happen to be the only one free enough to watch out for you.â Thereâs only a little bit of malice in the way he says it, but itâs still enough for you to know that you did in fact offend him, which only makes you feel worse.
Instead of forcing the topic though, you move on and ask him your next most pressing question, âSo, whatâs the plan then?â
To say that the next couple of days are awkward would be an understatement. You and Zeitgeist, as he had told you to call him, didnât exactly mesh all that well. Heâs all sharp edges and bitter words, while you are much softer, gentler. Neither of you seem to be adjusting well to being around each other as much as you have to be for this to work. And of course you didnât. You had gone from not knowing each other whatsoever to spending all of your free time together. He walked you to and from work, your internship, friendâs houses, and wherever else you were going on any given day and after more gifts had started to appear on your doorstep, he had even started staying at your place, sleeping on you couch. Which only made everything that much more awkward.
You felt bad that he was stuck sleeping on you small, crappy couch, â especially with how large of a man he is â and had been trying to make it up to him by making him breakfast and coffee in the mornings and trying to find little things in common that you guys had to talk about, but all of this only seemed to make him like you even less. He clearly isnât much of a talker, and you get that, you really do, but would it kill him to have the occasional, casual conversation with the girl heâs stuck spending all his time with.
That wasnât to say he wasnât keeping up his end of the bargain. You did absolutely feel safer with him around. He was an intimidating guy and Lenny had been coming into the diner less and less lately because of it. In fact, the only times Zeitgeist had been truly kind to you were the couple of times you had become truly worried for your safety. Like yesterday when a bottle of strong smelling perfume was left on your doorstep and he had kneeled down in front of you by the couch and talked you out of an anxiety attack, carefully to give you your space, but still keeping a hand on you knee. It had been just enough contact for you to ground yourself, and it reminded you that you werenât alone.
After that though, he barely said a word to you on your walk to the diner, only nodding along every now and then while you were talking to him. He had actually barely said anything to you since. Itâs not until you get back to your place after your day at the news station you interned at that you brought it up.
âAre you mad at me?â You ask him in a small, nervous voice.
He can hear the worry in your voice when you ask him. He almost wants to coo at how sweet you sound, but is quick to remind himself that this is just a job and you are just some random girl heâs been told to protect. That this was all gonna be over eventually and then you would probably never see each other again. And he wasnât about to lie to himself and pretend like you two were the kind of people to have any sort of unforced relationship. He knew you were both too different for that. There was no point in getting attached.
He takes a deep breath, before replying in a tight voice, âNo. I donât even talk much with my friends. What do you expect from me? This is just a job, Y/N.â
He immediately feels bad about how harsh he sounded when he sees your hurt face and the way your eyes widen at his sharp tone. He feels the need to reach out to comfort you but is quick to remind himself that getting close with you would only end with both of you hurting. The conversation comes to a quick conclusion when you mumble a quiet, âOk.â
It goes on like that for about the next week and a half. Neither of you talk all that much, though you do continue to make him breakfast and even goes as far as to buy him a bigger blanket the next time you go to the store when you notice that the one you had given him doesnât cover his whole body very well. You refuse to let his standoffishness affect you, choosing instead to continue to be sweet to the man protecting you. And to your surprise, it almost seemed to be working. I mean, he didnât exactly turn into a giant sweetheart overnight, but you had started to notice a bit of a softer side to him.
You donât know if he even knew he was showing it though. But you noticed. You noticed how he had started to hold doors open for you and how he had started to be less subtle with his protectiveness, even going so far as to occasionally rest his hand on the small of your back when you guys were in a shady area of town. And while you didnât bring it up, you had noticed how he had thrown a blanket over you the one time you had fallen asleep on the couch while watching tv after a particularly long day, before eventually carrying you to bed when it got late. And of course, there was the fact that he could never stop a slight blush from gliding over his cheeks the couple of times you had accidently let the nickname âZiggyâ pass through your lips.
Zeitgeist had noticed however, and if he was being honest with himself, it was really started to piss him off. Spending time around pretty girls wasnât exactly anything new for him, especially since he had joined the X-Force team, but none of them had affected him the way you did.
And to be fair, your current circumstances are more than a little different than how it had been with those girls. They were normally just one nights stands that he had met in some shitty bar. He didnât ever really get, or in some cases give himself, the chance to get to know them the way he had with you. He didnât know their favorite tv shows or their hobbies. He had never watched them dance around their kitchens in the morning to cheery music while they made him breakfast. And if he was being honest with himself, he knew that those girls didnât really care for him, at least not much. They were mostly just with him because he was some fucked up sort of superhero.
It didnât feel that way with you though. I mean sure, he was only around you because of him being part of the X-Force, but you didnât seem to idolize him for it the way the others had. You were kind to him just for the sake of being kind. You tried to have conversations with him because you genuinely wanted to, and on the rare occasion that he actually did join in, you truly listened to him, because you really cared about what he had to say.
And despite how hard he was trying, he couldnât seem to stop himself from getting attached to you. You and your sweet smile and big e/c eyes. He just couldnât stop himself from falling for you and your kind heart. And he hated it.
The more he recognized this, the more he tried to push you away. The way he saw it, it was better to push you away now then to have both of you become attached and just make it all that much harder when you inevitably lose track of each other. The two of you arenât similar enough to stay close without the forced circumstances you were currently under. Or at least thatâs what he though.
So, instead of just allowing his walls to get knocked down by you and your sweetness, he had started pushing back against his feelings, and therefore you harder. Which had led you both to where you were tonight.
You had only been back in your apartment for about 20 minutes when his bitter response to your question about dinner had set you off. It honestly wasnât even the worst thing that had ever been said to you, and normally you would just let it go, but for whatever reason, today it set you off. Maybe it was the fact that your day had been an absolute trainwreck, one bad thing followed by the next, or maybe it was how little you had slept lately due to the anxiety of having a psychopathic stalker, but you finally just hit your breaking point.
âDoes pasta sound ok? I havenât really had the chance to go to the store lately, so thereâs not much else to make.â
Even Axel doesnât like what comes out of his mouth next, he just says it hoping that youâll eventually tell him to go to hell and stop being so nice to him, âMaybe if you spent less of your time trying to force me to talk youâd of had the time.â
He knows itâs a low blow before heâs even had a chance to look at your face to see your response. Heâs not expecting what you say next though.
âWhat in the hell is your problem with me?â You throw the dish rag you were holding down on the counter and cross your arms over your chest, âI understand that you donât want to spend all of your time babysitting some random girl, ok! I get that, but I have gone out of my way to be nice to you and the least you could do is not be a giant asshole!â
You put your hand up to stop him when you notice him open his mouth to speak. Youâre not ready to stop talking yet, even though the logical part of your brain is screaming at you to shut up, âYou donât get to just act like youâre some sort of sociopath who doesnât care at all about the people around him, ok?! Because thatâs bullshit and we both know it. You care Z, I know you do! Youâre not as good at hiding it as you think you are and if you donât knock it off, if you donât start acting like a fucking human being, youâre not gonna have anyone left to care about because no one is gonna want to be around you!â
He can see your eyes widen when you say this last bit, clearly just as surprised as he is about how harsh you were being. He had never seen you like this before and he didnât like it. He missed the gentle girl he had come know, Â who had given him her softest pillow to sleep on and who had made sure had manly smelling shampoo in her shower. But, he also knew that everything you were saying was true, whether he wanted to believe it or not. He couldnât keep this up. And he had to start somewhere.
âZiggy-â Heâs the one who holds his hand up to stop you this time, and it works. You stare up at him with big worried eyes.
âAxel.â
âWhat?â You ask, surprised by both his strange reply and that fact that he said in such a calm voice, when you had half expected him to start yelling at you.
âMy name, my real name. Itâs Axel. Axel Cluney.â
And itâs a small start, but a start nonetheless.
Opening up to people hadnât ever really been Axelâs strong suit, though he does have to admit, it is at least a little bit easier with you. Once he had finally decided to give you a chance anyways. You were easy to talk to and a quite a good listener, not that he talked all that much still. Though, he did join in on conversations quite a bit more now. He had even started to open up to you about his personal life. He tells you about the auto shop he owns and about how he had joined the X-Force team. He eventually even opens up to you about how he had found out about his powers in the first place, about the girl whose face he had burned as a teenager, though it does take a night of drinking shitty beer at your place before he tells you all about that one.
Nights like tonight had become pretty common place lately. Nights where you get home from work and order a pizza or some takeout instead of actually cooking. Nights where you both just chill out, binge watching some sci-fi show or playing some random video game. You quickly learn that Axel is incredibly good at first person shooter games, to the point that playing them with him can be almost annoying.
Tonight, the two of you are slumped on the couch watching the most recent season of The Walking Dead and eating sloppily from cartons of orange chicken and lo mein. You eat in silence for a while. The quiet is only interrupted a few times, like when you start fangirling over just how badass Michonne is and when he makes a comment about being hotter than Daryl is while covered in grime, which makes you giggle. At some point during the night, after the food is long since forgotten, you had wound up laying on your side on the couch with your feet in his lap and his hand gently rubbing up and down your calves. Small moments of affection like this has become a regular occurrence between the two of you. Almost mindless even. Some things hadn't changed though.
Youâre still careful not to refer to him by his real name in public, instead just sticking to little nicknames that still make him blush a little, like Z or Ziggy. And he had even slipped up a few times recently, letting pet names like Sweetheart and Angel roll off his tongue before blushing just a little and looking away. And his protective nature had only gotten all the more obvious. He keeps his hand on the small of your back most of the time that you two are out and about and is quick to stare down anyone he sees as a threat, namely Lenny.
And you donât know if itâs because heâs scared of Axel or just because he doesnât want anything to do with anyone assorted with such an obvious mutant, but the gifts stop coming. They are instead replaced with glares and snarled insults when he comes into the diner and you still see the same car around enough to know that whatever this is, isnât over. So Axel continues to stick around and as you get to know him more, you canât stop yourself from developing feelings for the man sitting underneath your legs at the moment.
You honestly canât help yourself the more he shows his softer side around you and the more you realize that he really is just a gentle giant with a tough outer persona. And you canât help but feel incredibly special that heâs willing to let down that persona for you.
You donât realize that youâre staring at him until he does, when he turns his head to look back at you and gives you one of his rare, sweet smiles. You heart flutters at this and you almost want to kick yourself for letting this man turn you into a blushing school girl. He gives your leg a gentle squeeze before turning back to face the tv again.
Nights like this make you almost want to ask him what this unspoken thing between the two of you is, but you never do. You fear that bringing it up will throw off whatever this is. That your straightforwardness with scare off this kind man who was just starting to open up to you. Or even worse, that he wonât know what youâre talking about at all. What if he doesnât feel the same way and is instead just a really affectionate guy with the people he is close to and only thinks of you as a friend? It would break your heart to lose him, and whatever you to have, so instead you just keep your mouth shut and enjoy moments like this when you have them. When your lucky enough to be near him and have his affections all focused on you. Â
You and Axel arenât often very far apart when you arenât at your separate jobs. Today though, he had had to walk off for a few minutes to take a private phone call from Wade, so he had left you sitting at a small table at your favorite coffee shop with some papers for your internship to look over while he stood outside and talked on the phone. You glance out the window to check on him and find him looking back at you with his phone still pressed to his ear. Itâs clearly not a very happy phone call, so you send him a little smile and wave. He sends you back a small, timid grin but is quickly back into his phone call, so you go back to reading your papers.
Your eyes are drawn back away from your papers once again when the barista meanders over to your table and gives you a polite grin before asking if you need a refill. You decline, explaining to the young man that you should be heading out soon.
âWells thatâs a shame. âS always nice to have such a pretty face around here.â
You blush a little at his unasked-for compliment and thank him awkwardly, looking back towards Axel to see that he is still on his call. The barista, David his nametag says, continues to stand in front of you, a small grin still stretched over his tan face. He is attractive, thatâs for sure, but something about having another man flirt with you seems wrong. And, of course, you know this is ridiculous. That there probably isn't anything real going on between Axel and you and you know that youâve probably just built it up in you head, but it still feels like youâre his somehow.
âWhatâs your name, beautiful?â
You once again hesitate a bit before replying, deciding that there was absolutely nothing wrong with one little conversation with the hot barista. Your voice is slightly less confident when you answer than you would like it to be, âY/N. Iâm Y/N.â
âDavid,â He says with a cocky smile, holding his hand out to you to shake.
Axel comes back in less than a minute later to find David flirting with you and you replying with forced laughs and kinda awkward jokes back. He heads straight towards you table, before coming to a stop right next to your chair, his shoulders back and arms crossed.
âSorry that took so long. You ready to go, Angel?â He tries hard to keep the jealousy out of his voice, especially since he himself isnât quite ready to admit that that is indeed what he is feeling.
You nod quickly, ready to get out of this uneasy situation and give David a quick smile before standing up and following Axel out the door. Neither of you try all that hard to start up a conversation on your way back home. The air between you two is tense, though not tense like it was before he had told you his name. Itâs different this time.
His demeanor isnât distant like it was back then. His hand is still resting on your back like it had been lately, his other one hanging in a fist at his side and his chest is puffed out a bit more than normal. He seems almostâŚjealous. Youâre a bit shocked when you come to this conclusion honestly. He never seemed the possessive type to you, though you canât say your entirely disliking this side of him.
He shuts your front door a bit harder then normal when you both step into your apartment and thatâs when you finally decide to bring it up. âIs everything ok, Axel?â
Hearing you call him by his real name still did something to him, even though its been a while since he told you it and itâs still somehow enough to calm him down slightly.
âYeah, why wouldnât I be?â
You can barely stop yourself from rolling your eyes at this, and are quick to realize that if you wanted this actually resolved, you were gonna have to do it yourself.
âNo, I donât think you are.â
His eyebrows raise, and he canât stop himself from letting his more defensive side get ahead of him. âOf really, sweetheart. And whyâs that?â He crosses his arms back over his chest subconsciously.
âBecause,â you stop for a second, unsure of how to fraise it, before deciding to just go for it, âI think youâre jealous.â
His eyes widen a bit, but you start speaking again before he can say anything, âAnd honestly, I donât think you have the right to be.â
Your demeanor had started to imitate his and your arms had also made their way to cross over your chest. Though he uncrosses his just a moment later and scoffs slightly before running one of his large hands through his already messy hair. Axel isnât used to being left speechless and he definitely doesnât like it. But, at some point he knows that he has to just deal with the fact that you have some sort of crazy effect on him, because in all actuality, he kind of loves it.
His hands move to rest on his hips before he finally finds his voice again, âAnd how did you come to this conclusion?â
You take a deep breath before answering, forcing them out despite the anxiety they are causing you, âWell, you havenât exactly claimed me in any way that would give you the right to be upset that another guy was flirting with me, now have you?â
His head tilts a bit to the side at this and he narrows his eyes at you. His long legs move him towards you slowly, careful to give you enough time to tell him to back off before he stops to stand directly in front of you, forcing your back against the wall behind you. âAnd is that what you want, Angel?â
Air catches in your throat at his gruff whisper, but you force yourself to nod. That is what you wanted anyways, to be his and have him be yours.
He has to lean down to get close enough to kiss you, mumbling a quietly as he does so, âHave it your way then.â

âWhy do you act like this?â I yelled at him.
âLike what?âÂ
âLike Iâm a defenceless little kitten!!âÂ
âIâm doing it to protect you!â He snapped back.
âWhy? Why do you act like this? And only with me?! Iâm a grown adult that is more than capable of taking care of themselves!!â He took a deep breath as I glared at him.
âDo you think I-â I shut me up, crashing his lips onto mine, gripping my hips. I moaned in his mouth as he brought me into his chest. I pulled away, trying to catch my breath.
âWhat was that for?â I panted.
âNo reason,â He blurted out, turning around.
âWait wait wait,â I grabbed his arm, waiting for an explanation.
âI might have grown an interest in you..." He whispered. I nodded at him before pulling him back to me.
âWhy donât you show me how interested you are in me?â I smiled as the corner of his lips tugged upwards.
So basically Im finishing up the chapter and it should be up within the next couple hours. So why dont you guys keep sending head canons while I finish it up?
Hello, my dear! Can I get some sweet soft dom Axel aftercare with finger sucking?
Yeth maâamđĽľđ
This got long too because Axel just has that effect on me and this was too cuteđĽş
ââ-
Laying limply against the man who cuddled you close, your body barely even responded to the dragging of his fingertips up and down your arm.
âYou were so good for me,â Axel whispers, kissing your sweaty hairline. âAlways are such a good girl.â
âThank you,â you whisper hoarsely.
Axel smiles softly, kissing your hair again. âWhat can I do for you, my love? Is there anything you want to do?â
You shrug, âI could use a snack?â Axel nods before slowly sliding out of your grip, laughing while your hold instinctively gets tighter.
âBaby?â He teases, laughing some more when your glazed eyes look up at him. âIf Iâm getting you something to eat, you gotta let go of me.â He smooths your hair back gently as you whine, not wanting to let go.
âCan you help me in the shower?â You ask softly. Axel smiles, âof course, sweet heart. Youâd look like Bambi if you tried to walk on your own right now.â You giggle softly as Axel helps you stand, easing you towards the bathroom conjoined to the bedroom. He sits you on the toilet, turns on the water and dangles his hand under it to feel it.
âAll nice and warm, my love,â he says, helping you stand back up and easing you into the shower. Youâre entire body is against his as he washes you both down, and when he starts to rub the shampoo in your hair, you swear you could fall asleep right there and then against him. He places a soft kiss to your temple, snapping you back to reality, âalmost done princess. Then weâll get some food, and sleep all we want, okay?â You hum, letting the suds of your conditioner slide out of your hair.
The water shuts off as he helps you out of the shower, wrapping you in a fluffy towel and patting your butt to walk. He wraps one around his waist lowly, as despite your jello-like legs and exhaustion, the way the water glistens against Axelâs tattoos makes your stomach flip.
You dry off in your shared bedroom, and he catches you by complete surprise as he throws one of his shirts at your head, making you giggle at his silliness. You slide the shirt over your head and a clean pair of panties over your legs as he merely dawns a pair of shorts, hanging low on his hips. Sleepily, you wrap your arms around his waist and walk with him to the kitchen, his compliance making the experience even sillier.
âWhatâre you hungry for, sweet pea?â Axel asks, his hands resting on yours. You smirk against his back, âyou.â
âHar har, youâre so clever,â he teases, grabbing a box of cheese-its and a juice box before bringing you both back to your room, where he then proceeds to ease cheese-its past your limp, barely moving lips.
You both finish the box of cheese-its, and once he knows youâve finished your juice, he kisses the crumbs off of the corner of your lips, pulling you close to his chest.
You paw slightly at his arm, making him look down at you sweetly, âwhatâs up buttercup?â He asks.
You say nothing, merely reaching behind you at the hand thatâs wrapped around you, and bringing it to your face. He sweetly caresses the smooth planes of your cheeks and jaw before easing his thumb past your lips. You take it gratefully, suckling on the pad, slightly bitter from the soap he used in the shower, though the familiar salt taste and smooth feeling of him against your tongue overrides any issues you may have had. The comfort of having his large hand so close to you makes you feel so small, so sweet, and you donât even bother trying to fight the drooping of your eyes as you fall asleep.
You feel Axelâs lips plant against your forehead, âgo to sleep my sweetie girl... Iâve got you, my sweet.â
