Hi Eirikr!! It's been forever - if you forgot who I am, it's Francine, I used to endlessly bug you about Amemiya and Nira designs in IV and how much I genuinely liked Abdiel's Nahobino form, but I like to think we had a good rapport regardless and i've always hugely appreciated your insight into myth. I just wanted to come crawling back to say that I actually finally got to work on an rpg painting the monsters myself! I'm not going to front that we have a prominent mythological element (more allusions and a general mythic "Structure" narratively/thematically) BUT we follow on from the SMT sci-fantasy d.crawler tradition and I would love for you to take a look. Demo's out now on steam - it's called Descent of Lunaris! The weirdest designs I worked on aren't surfaced in the shown content so far but I wanted you to see it regardless, since your documentation of Kaneko's own approach to design was so deeply influential on me. Cheers!
Hey Francine!
A good friend of mine has been part of the Descent of Lunaris playtest for a bit now and he's really been enjoying it.
Investigate a signal emanating from deep within the moon and fight through a dark reflection of human nature. Are you being tested, or punis
He couldn't wait to show me a slice of it (within what is allowed) not too long ago and, upon seeing the art style of the monsters, I realized immediately I had seen it before. So I scrambled to look it up--and sure enough, it was your Francine/witnesstheabsurd self. I was delighted.
Everything about it looks terrific and I can't even begin to guess what the throughline behind all these crazy designs could be. I feel like I might have to finally watch something like Amemiya's Zeiram to get a clue.
I wish you and your team the best of luck with the game's full release! I will be there for it!
It means a lot that my point of view on Kaneko's designs might have played a small role in it all.
In today's episode of "fan art for things only I care about," been kind of obsessed with this 90s tokusatsu monster movie after finding it in a thrift store, everything about it is exactly my thing!
