Zechariahās Futuristic Prophecies
āZechariahās last prophecies, in the form of two oracles, are once again highly figurative.Ā They are undoubtedly messianic and give some of the clearest details about the life and death of the Messiah.

Israel's Repentance
The Salvation of Jerusalem (Zechariah 12:10b - 13:1) The āwailingā of Revelation 1:7 is an echo of the context of the āpiercingā prophecy in Zechariah 12:10. The immediate result of Israelās looking to Jesus as He returns to deliver them is that they will mourn and wail throughout their society. The verse concludes: āthey shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.ā (12:10b). This deep and thorough mourning in repentance will extend to all levels of Jewish society (see 12:11-14). Even though the chapter division prevents some readers from seeing it clearly, the first verse of the following chapter shows clearly that the mourning will lead to a cleansing from sin. āOn that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleannessā (Zech 13:1). This repentance and cleansing describes what other passages also affirm ā that there will be a national cleansing of Israel from their sin of rejecting Jesus as Messiah. This salvation is mentioned not only by the Hebrew prophets but also by the Apostle Paul in Rom 11:26, 27: āAnd in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, āThe Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob.ā āAnd this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sinsā.ā This passage describes their repentance in terms of sorrow and mourning. This language recalls another amazing messianic prophecy ā that of Isaiahās āSuffering Servantā in Isaiah 52:13 ā 53:12. This āpenitential dirgeā may very well be the words that will be used by repenting Israel as they mourn in sorrow over their rejected and crucified Messiah. Let me ask you to imagine Israel singing the following section of Isaiah 53 as their āSong of Repentanceā on that day that Zechariah 12:10ff finds its fulfillment. "He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all" (Isa 53:3-6). Israelās long night of exile from her land and also from her Lord will end someday. Zechariah, however, says that she will need to go through a dark period before the light breaks forth into their souls. O Lord, hasten that day! "Lev 26:40ff has been important in my own understanding of Israel's repentance and promised restoration" (Jason Beals).
