The hills on Dorena was far enough from the Capital City, so the light pollution was low. And the dry season just came, so the sky was clear and cloudless.
Just the perfect time and the perfect place to stargaze.
Zarkon took Kolivan on his hoverbike, bringing along a picnic basket with him. The hills would be inside a conservation zone, so they couldn’t hunt in there. That was fine, though. He’d rather enjoy some quiet time with his mate instead of rolling around on the ground and chasing prey.
The basket was filled with light snacks and drinks, some of them are Kolivan’s favorite too. When they arrived at the top of the hill, Kolivan helped him spreading a blanket while Zarkon secured the hoverbike.
“It’s so quiet up here”, Kolivan said when Zarkon returned.
Zarkon vaguely could hear roars from the conservation zone below and raised an eyebrow.
Kolivan gave him an annoyed ear-twitch. “Oh, you know what I mean.”
Zarkon sat down and almost immediately, Kolivan rested their head on his shoulder. Both of them stared up to the dark purple sky above where stars and galaxies twinkled lazily. Around this time of the year, he could see the constellation Kolivan was named after.
“You can see Kranorin”, Zarkon said quietly.
“Really? Where?” Kolivan perked up in attention.
Zarkon pointed at Kuril, the southern pole star and also the brightest star in the night sky. “Take a line from Kuril, parallel to Rotika. The first blue star after it is the tip of Kranorin’s blade.”
“You know a lot about stars, isaya”, Kolivan hummed— isaya, meaning stardust in Lorian, Kolivan’s first language.
Zarkon blushed at the affectionate nickname. Thank stars it was dark out here.

Have you shared any young and in love Zarkon/Kolivan headcanons with us?
There have bean a few mentions here and there in some of the memes I’ve answered, but here, let me give you some more:
Kolivan never expected to court or be courted by anyone even close to the royal line. So every time Zarkon showed him even the slightest bit of fond attention, he clammed up and tripped over his words.Zarkon was originally drawn by Kolivan’s striking features, but became really determined to court him after watching him lead a strategic fleet and also catching sight of him in hand-to-hand spars in the training fields.
Once they’re together, Kolivan is incredibly physically affectionate. He believes he’ll never quite have the way with words that Zarkon does, but he makes up for it with forehead touches, nuzzling and not-so-accidental brushes.
Zarkon dotes on Kolivan, and it’s never to make a show of the difference in their upbringing, but because he wants Kolivan to know nothing is too good for him. He’s even more insistent on it when he starts leaving the planet with the rest of the Voltron Paladins. Kolivan receives souvenirs and exotic food every time Zarkon returns.
Zarkon is not above sneaking away from the throne to spend time with Kolivan, making the other advisors in the court fret and fuss. Kolivan also fusses “You should not be here” when he sneaks into Kolivan’s military quarters. But never gets much further than that. Kolivan doesn’t really want to argue.
They are very passionate with one another, even more so when their time together is limited by their responsibilities. Becoming a Paladin takes Zarkon away from the planet a lot more than either of them like. It doesn’t stop them from talking about having cubs together and having a future in a peaceful universe. That’s why Zarkon fights so hard – for the future of their family.
i literally cant work on this any longer bc i’ve been so emotionally compromised asjkdhjkgshdja buuuuuuut yeah here goes the astral plane forehead touch _(:3」∠)_
Zarkon and Kolivan, eh? Do you think Zarkon remembers anything of him, or has his mind become so lost so to speak that he remembers close to nothing?
When I think about the current Zarkon (S1-S2), I definitely think he’s deteriorated to just about the worst he could be. His focus is on destroying the last Alteans, removing the new paladins and most importantly, getting the Black Lion back again. I really don’t think he has the capacity to see beyond stopping at nothing to attain those goals.
I’ve read some posts about how Zarkon felt like a really weak villain, a two-dimensional type of character. I actually see where folks are coming from. His focus is narrowed down so sharply that he has no room for anything he deems weak, his strategy for attacking is to just chase, trap and hit with everything. Even Commanders Sendak and Prorok showed better tactical sense when they were trying to capture Voltron. And yet Zarkon was willing to destroy others of his kind who showed signs of thinking without his direction or retreating to save lives. For a guy who saw his home planet get destroyed, he sure is liberal with turning his remaining army into canon fodder. It screams broken mind to me.
That being said, I think there is very little that he remembers of better times. That includes his mate, his customs, his traditions and everything he loved. I think there are those flashes, like that sense of seeing or hearing or smelling something familiar in the peripheral, but the minute he goes to focus on it, it’s gone. He’s grasping at smoke spirals, no clear pictures, no good memories. It’s incredibly sad to consider and maybe the only place he can ever find those parts of himself is within the bond with Black that has been severed. It’s clear he still has something with her, so maybe it’s not lost, but it is certainly far beyond his reach.

Do your Galra believe in some version of an afterlife? (Totally not asking because of your Thaxus ship).
I’ll be honest with you, that’s an avenue of the Galra I’ve never really explored! (Of COURSE you’re not asking because of them. You couldn’t POSSIBLY want them to be reunited in the afterlife to be together happily in eternity like I do..)
I feel like...maybe they don’t? One of my favorite things is that art of Keith looking at the memorials of fallen Blades and seeing Ulaz and Thace together. That really fucked me up made me realize that perhaps the Galra might see a finality at the end of their life cycles. Enough that burying the dead with their mate would be seen as a final respect, the thing you DO for those that have passed.
It may also be that they’re like the cultures who bury with the most precious possessions of that being. So that in death they can carry with them the things they prized in life. For me, let Thace’s memorial include something that Haxus had given him or a token of their time together. Let Haxus have been lost in the battle with Pidge while still wearing Thace’s signet ring beneath his armor.
pssst do something fluffy with zarkon/kolivan ~hello-my-stars
[before I even saw your url, I was like “arka, is that u?”]
Kolivan understands that ships are a necessary part of life, especially for a galactic trading hub planet such as his own. He gets it, but he prefers to keep his feet firmly planted on the ground as often as possible. He can’t take the love of flying from Zarkon, however, and he doesn’t dare try. He listens when his mate talks about exploration and diplomatic voyages, watches with a fond smile as he runs his hand over the hull of the newest crafts in their fleet. Kolivan is certain that when Zarkon ascends to the throne, his advisors will still be chasing him down to the hangar and beyond. Suffice to say, Kolivan has seen many ships in his time at Zarkon’s side.
He’s never seen one like the black lion before.
“She is stunning, is she not?” Zarkon rumbles, staring up at her from next to Kolivan.
Kolivan tries to take it all in, his gaze sweeping up and down. Her presence fills up the spaces between his ribs, and it takes effort to catch his breath. If this is how she affects him, he can only imagine what she does to Zarkon. He doesn’t have to be told, he knows in an instant that Zarkon is meant to be her pilot. Frankly, the thought is terrifying.
“Very stunning, my lord,” Kolivan replies when he realizes he’s let the silence stretch too long. A quick glance around them confirms they are alone. “What is she?”
“I know not. Only that she was crafted from the star that crashed here and she is part of something greater than anything we can imagine.”
Kolivan’s ears flicker back. “She lives.”
“She does. Alfor’s vision is that she and the others will help us protect our homes from any that would threaten us.”
Others. There are more. Truly a part of something greater. Kolivan appreciates the joy he can all but touch radiating from Zarkon, but the notion fills him with a low hum of dread. He can’t help but think that dread will follow him every time Zarkon takes flight with her, embarks on this noble mission to protect the universe and their people. As a soldier of the empire, Kolivan knows full well how this works. The oath to fight and defend comes with every risk imaginable, and in a galaxy full of unknowns – planets they’ve never seen, fleets they’ve never encountered – lives are at stake, particularly those on the front lines. It’s a life he’s always been willing to accept for himself, but from the moment their paths crossed, Kolivan has known that Zarkon is meant for greater things. He’s heard it in the barracks, but he’s also experienced it close and personal. It’s one of the many things that has drawn him in and never quite let him go. As unworthy as he sometimes feels to have this Galra, this prince as his mate, he is never more proud to stand at his side. If something were to happen to him…
“You worry, I can tell.” Zarkon’s tone is teasing but warm. He reaches out, tracing the bright red marks over Kolivan’s brow, also well aware they are alone and away from prying eyes. This intimacy can be afforded, and Kolivan is not immune to it.
He turns his face towards Zarkon’s touch, his eyes closing. “You know me well.”
“I ought to.” Zarkon is still teasing him. “Perhaps if you were not so adverse to the skies, you could join the fleet.”
“Ahh, but then who will be here to protect your lands?”
“More importantly,” Zarkon murmurs, turning to fully face Kolivan. He tips forward just enough that their foreheads touch, they breathe the same air together. “Who will be here to welcome me home?”
Kolivan feels the skin beneath his fur grow uncomfortably warm. Zarkon’s chuckle is soft, and Kolivan huffs out a sigh. “I will always be here, Zarkon. You know this.”
“I do.” The words are followed with a caress along the tuft of one ear, and down along the scruff at Kolivan’s jaw.
They share a kiss, exchange a nip of teeth along lower lips, playful and intimate. As Kolivan places his hands on Zarkon’s waist to draw him closer, he feels that sensation from before filling his chest. It feels like a purr, but no sound is coming from him. Zarkon laughs again.
