The Rescue (Pt. 2)
While it had been quite the relief for the shackle to unclasp from his ankle, Jackary nearly yelped, whining once tears formed within his eyes again. He tucked his face away further against Gentil's neck, panting desperately for air from the sudden strain. When the glowing metal hit the ground, part of his flesh had been caked onto it, burned and ripped from the limb upon release.
"Th... Thanks..." Jack barely managed and swallowed hard. The moment his body was able to allow his own mana to flow within his veins again, the air instantly cooled around him and a brief layer of ice reformed over his skin to relax the burning sensations. Just as soon as the frost coated his skin, it sank in and appeared to vanish.
The moment the cold was felt through the Priest's fingers that were connected to the Mage, Gentil pushed harshly and without warning, popping the arm back into the socket for the second time in two days. Jack hissed out, baring his fangs yet his tears finally spilled, forcing his eyes to close. He missed Darnath standing up and taking a few steps back from his attention ripped to his shoulder from his leg.
"Just... Put it in a sling or something... the joint's shattered... It's not safe here, for any of you..." Jack panted heavily, both notched and regular ear began to fall back.
"Easy now..." Gen sighed out, wrapping the entire limb to the Mage's torso to assure that it couldn't suffer anymore damage for the moment.
"You let me worry about that, Jack. I will keep us safe." Darnath assured, watching Gentil tighten the bandages with Mageweave.
Keeping still for Gentil's sake, his eyes closed as he gulped hard. "A-All of you, huh..?" He whispered, biting back any noises that came from the wounds being touched along his entire torso in the process. Amazingly, the dragon sat still while the Priest lifted his fingers to search for bumps and cuts along his head... Until he felt those adoring fingers caress through the shortened locks of hair.
Jackary flinched, pulling away.
Darnath lifted his gaze from the two to look over at Azurick and Zangen who had been busying themselves with another cage. "Besides, we plan on destroying these cages before we leave. At least slow down whatever the fuck is going on here."
"Heh... Good idea..." Jack mumbled, finally relaxing into Gentil's inspections again. He had to mentally remind himself that the one who had been touching him wouldn't harm him. He felt ugly, almost as if the smaller male's fingers didn't deserve to have to place their flawless beauty onto something so grotesque as what he only assumed he looked like.
When the Priest dug into his satchel, he produced a flask and uncapped it.. "Drink, you need some water. You're dehydrated and the herbs won't settle if you are." As he spoke, the flask was lifted towards Jack's lips in offering to help.
Jackary was careful in tilting his head to meet the flask's angle to gulp, not only following command, but he had been flat out parched. Fingers moved to curl around Gentil's robe near his knee, holding on out of desire for security while he drank as much as Gentil would offer him.
Pulling the water away before too much was taken, Gen sat it down at their sides and replaced it with a vial that he began to shake to mix the concoction completely. "This will help with infection. Normally takes a few days and you're not at your peak. Just let it work." He remarked, finishing up by uncapping the vial until he offered it over just as he did the water. "All of it, kay?"
The scent caused Jackary's nose to wrinkle yet he dared not fight it. He dared not deny the request of the one person who could have brought such a wild beast down with mere words. Instead, he chuckled and went to drink, nearly coughing part of the liquid up in the process from sore muscle and foul taste. After minor struggle, he managed to down the entire contents.
While Darnath finally walked away to join Azurick and Zangen, Gen lifted his sleeve up, gripping it with his fingers to gently dab Jack's mouth to clean it, offering the water again soon after. "You need rest. In a warm bed. No trees for a little while."
After a sip of water was taken, Jack swished the liquid around in his mouth a moment to rinse it, swallowing the remnants of flavour and medicine. "I lack one... Sorry, Doc." He murmured, lifting his gaze to meet Gentil's.
Much to the Mage's dismay, he was greeted with a no-nonsense look from the Priest, the serious look almost unfitting on the normally soft features. "Then you'll rest at the estate. I need to keep an eye on you."
A smile was forced through a breath of amusement. "I'd like that... I'm sure Flynn has a spare room."
"I'm sure he has more than he needs," came the Priest's reply in an amused tone.
Jackary lifted a hand gingerly once he had been left alone with Gentil completely, his fingers dared to caress along his cheek just to assure that his boyfriend was indeed real and right there. His mind was still doubtful. "I thought I'd never see you again."
"TIMBER!"
The loud crackle of Darnath's voice sounded out, followed by the sound and tremor of something falling in the distance. As the entire area shook from one of the generators being knocked down, Gentil nearly jumped out of his skin from the surprising noise. At the same moment, Jack's eyes had widened, unexpected of the loud noises.
The Priest furrowed once he was able to recollect himself, returning his gaze to the Mage. "I wasn't going to give up."
It was the pained truth that sank into Jack's chest and a bittersweet smile barely crept over his lips. "Guess I know who really cares now, don't I...?"
"Don't think of that now..." Gen frowned, watching over the dirtied face in front of him. "Let's just get you out of here and safe. I hate this place."
Jack exhaled at how brief the moment was to be. "Horrible time to kiss you, I suppose. You do still owe me one." The words were pained, the last time he had seen Gentil, it had been all he really wanted but everytime he turned around, he was denied and others received them instead. He simply couldn't fathom what he had done wrong. What had made him in trouble to be shunned from such.
Gentil's expression softened from it's stern gaze until he leaned in, pressing a careful kiss at the dirtied cheek.
Even as the other had done so, Jackary tilted his head at the last moment, capturing a soft kiss right on the lips. His heart ached, emotions were on high and he had been left in a cage to rot with his own wallowing doubts and fears. "I'm sorry... For everything. For upsetting you and leaving and all of this..."
The Priest lifted his fingers to touch along the good arm of his partner as he leaned back to be able to look up at him. "Jack, this wasn't your fault. Please just relax and don't worry."
He couldn't help it, Jack soon lowered his gaze, too ashamed to look into the eyes of the one he cared so deeply for. "It was unfair of me..." He choked out the confession, unable to hold back what he had wanted to explain. "All of it... I should have just stayed with you and waited to apologize when you woke up... I should have just..."
He was silenced when Gentil squeezed the arm, as if such a movement controlled the beast with little effort. "Jack please. You didn't know this would happen."
A growl escaped when draconic optics tightly closed, holding back the tears that had been working their way to the corners of his eyes. "I d-didn't mean to make you cry... Not then... Not now..."
A sigh escaped the smaller male, followed by a little smile. "No one can stop me from doing that."
As the dragon leaned in to nuzzle at the other, he stopped himself. Perhaps he wasn't even worthy enough to touch his counterpart, perhaps Gentil had been so angry at him that he had given a kiss to his cheek in pity. The mental strain and anxiety had begun to eat him alive. Such thoughts forced him to slowly recoil and frown to himself. "... Let's get you out of here, alright...?"
"For me? Of course." Gen teased and winked, even if the Mage missed such a lightly playful action. His attention turned to the side while hands busied themselves to repack his bag so that leaving could have come all the quicker.
The Rescue (Pt 1.)
The idle hum of the arcane cage around the Mage had been the only noise or sign of life. The facility seemed far too quiet and such a silence was welcomed by the sleeping blond. He was slowly aroused by the sound of footsteps approaching, several from the sounds of it. Jack had half hoped that they thought he was dead or they would simply walk by. The soft voices were almost mute to him, muffled and seemed so far away... Even the sound of someone crying.
"Jack!" The voice called out, warm and familiar, as if Jackary knew it from somewhere.
... Gentil?
"No! Don't touch it." Came another vaguely familiar voice which forced the Mage's ears to twitch. The muttered tones, the sound of goggles twisting and focusing... He knew them.
There was a buzzing noise which jarred Jackary awake, a Tauren having tapped his staff to the barrier to test what would happen. As much as they all feared, it would have killed them where they stood if they had physically tampered with it.
"Look around for a power source or something. I can try to blast it down, but I'd rather not have to." The same voice as before. Jack's memory became strained, trying to remember. They were behind him, circling him. was this a mere dream?
"I think it's built with pressure dividers, just overloading the thing would take a ton of juice. We need the generator." A deeper voice finally spoke up which forced Jackary's ears to twitch again. It must have been an odd dream for Jackary if he was imagining Darnath in it, too.
"We're here Jack... We've come for you... You'll be okay..." The Priest called out and dropped to his knees, mere inches from the wall that separated him from the trembling Mage.
No.... That was Gentil.
Within Jack's mind, Darnath began to speak again, almost as if whispering sweetly to coax him to fully wake up, he half wanted to stay clung to his hypnagogic state. "Can you hear us at all? I know there is a buffer between us still, just hold on."
Dulled peridot hues began to open from the voices, having chalked it up to heavy hallucinations, his desire to be rescued so grave that he had to have been imagining that someone was actually there.
As Darnath paced along the cage wall a moment, he finally glanced up to the top of the walls, sighing. "Oh fuck you guys..."
Azurick finally turned back towards Darnath before his eyes ascended to where the man had been looking. "Oh god. It's up there?"
Gentil's fingers lifted, lingering near the edge of the arcane barrier as another sob was choked back from his shaken form. "Jack... Don't worry, we have you now... You'll be okay... We'll take you home..."
He would have sworn that was Gentil. He wanted the comfort of his partner so bad... He must have let the Angel's voice dance along his broken ears.
Zangen offered a single nod, more focused on what Darnath and Azurick had discovered. "It should be rather easy to destroy that. A good Moonfire with Azu hitting it should do the device in."
No.... Jackary knew these voices. They were here, they had to be. Carefully, his trembling figure started to inch itself up until he sat there, exhaling out in a hiss of pain.
It was then that the Mage looked over, locking eyes with the horrified Priest. He was there. They were there... People were there! Jack's sunken eyes softened when he and Gentil both glanced up to the generator target only to once more finally stare at one another. It was like seeing a ghost, it felt far too surreal.
"It'd be worth a shot." Azurick called out again, reaching behind him to withdraw the staff from it's holster on his back. "On your mark."
"Fire." Zan replied, putting both large hands together until a purple sphere easily formed, conjuring a brightly glowing, purple-hued beam. At the same moment, Azurick lifted his staff to point it directly at their target, summoning a crackle of arcane energy. Both spells entwined in perfect timing, striking the Sphere and Conduit that had held the walls in place, destroying the technology.
As soon as the walls finally vanished, Jackary took in a deep breath, able to feel the pain from the constant shocks near his anklet waver and stop. His breathing became nothing more than struggled pants to enjoy a moment of actual air.
"JACK!" Gentil called out again and stumbled to his feet, running into the cage the moment he could. As Gentil dropped down to sit in front of Jackary, Azurick joined them soon after, just behind the frantic priest.
"Ironic..." Jack gasped, his voice strained as his left hand reached up for his partner. "That you came from the East, no...?
Gentil laughed softly through the tears that streamed down his face and gripped the hand, pulling it to his cheek. "B-But I was traveling west." he murmured. "We found you..."
Jack smiled a bit more, allowing his fingertips to graze soothingly along Gentil's cheek and jawline. "And I'm lookin' East." The movements were soon caught out the corner of his eye in which he glanced up, suddenly realizing just who all was there.... And who all wasn't. "I ah..." he stammered, in quite a bit of shock. "I owe you guys..."
Instead of dwelling upon it, Zangen approached, looking the elven-shaped body over as best he could through waning vision. "We should fix your arm," he noted, causing Jackary to glance at the limp, useless appendage.
Gen had been quick to reach into his bag, fumbling through until a shirt was fetched and he soon began to lift it up, his next biggest concern had been just how cold Jack's skin was, let along his still shivering body. "It's cold..." He crooned. "...Please let me help."
"Stop!" Zan grunted, forcing Jackary and Gentil to freeze within their motions.
"He's freezing." Gentil frowned with protest.
Even as Azurick folded his arms and took a step back to let Zangen have plenty of room to look, Jackary forsook the idea of the warm clothing and struggled to lift his right leg. It was battered, swollen and cracked in several areas, as if burn marks continued to split open. "Can we get this shit off my ankle first... It would be hella appreciated."
The Tauren watched quietly for a moment until he motioned with a hand towards the messy limbs. His head shook soon after. "His arm needs to be fixed before you put that on him or you will hurt him more. Darnath should be able to remove it."
"Hmm? Remove what now?" Darnath blinked, pulling himself away from oogling all over the technology around them.
Gentil furrowed, forcing himself to turn off his tears and focus on what needed to be done. Instead of lingering on his own trembling heart, he eased closer to finally take a look at the damaged arm.
The moment the Priest had finally been close enough, Jackary leaned forward the rest of the way to nuzzle at his boyfriend firmly, his face soon hid away. "The shackle... It's gotta have a switch or code or something..." He mumbled, pressing his nose to Gentil's neck to finally take in the calming scent.
Gentil allowed Jack to stay close to him in hopes that it had kept his occupied while he busied himself further with looking over the shoulder. "The swelling needs to come down... It needs to be frozen or I can't move it."
Jack gave a tired, amused grin. "Yeh well... If Focus can get it off... Ice is easy."
Azurick frowned, glancing down at Jackary. "Who did this to you...?"
"The shackle or this fancy cage thing?" he questioned in return, staying close to Gen as if it was the safest place to be. He hadn't moved an inch, knowing Darnath had dropped down to his knees to look over the shackle. Even as the Knight lightly grasped it and was forced to gingerly turn the leg here and there to see what he was working with, Jackary bit back his low growls of pain, his face tucked further away to hide.
"I can get it off," Darnath interjected, reaching for a few tools from his pockets. "Just give me a few seconds so it does not explode with all the energy he's been absorbing and kill us all."
Azurick stood there, baffled even as Darnath spoke. "Wha... all of this! All these corpses." He questioned as Zangen nodded his head in silent agreement of wanting to know.
"Never saw their face... B-Bunch of Zealots jumped me... F-Fuck I shouldn't have left the estate..." He spoke through clenched teeth from the handling of his leg. Gentil had finally braced Jack's shoulder firmly to hold him in place and let the Mage hide, watching Darnath's work in the process.
"What race were they?" Azurick questioned again, egging on the conversation.
"Humans, mostly... Smelled a few other species... The ones that did all of this to me... To them... Human, I think. I dunno...I couldn't smell anything but burning flesh and I couldn't see... They were covered head to toe."
With a frown, Azurick turned, pivoting on his heel. "I'm going to look around for any trace of them."
As odd as it was for Jack to say, he gave a faint nod, mumble out "Please be careful, yeah?"
Another nod from the Warlock assured he heard the Mage. "As always."
"I'll go with him." Zan suggested, turning to lightly tap the ground with his staff to follow Azurick to the cage across the room.
A sigh escaped Dar the moment the tell-tale clink of the shackled sounded out, letting the, know that it had opened. As it fell to the floor, he leaned back slightly. "There! That should feel better."
At least.... It was a start.
