As I write this, I’m sitting in front of my 13” MacBook Air, but missing my iPad. As a writing device, many articles have come out describing using the iPad as a writing tool so I won’t rehash how to go about it, but I will tell you a bit about the ZAGGfolio. The ZAGGfolio is a keyboard/case/stand for the iPad 2, and it is simply fantastic at turning the iPad into a writing station.

The ZAGGfolio is stylish. I used to carry a black leather bound notepad. It was classy and I took it to meetings and everyone was impressed. I would carry the ZAGGfolio in the same manner if I worked for something other than the government and our meetings actually mattered. It’s got a sturdy, cross stitch pattern on the outside, and soft lining on the inside to protect your valuable iPad 2. And only iPad 2. The case is specifically molded for the camera and the thinner edges. If you have an iPad 1, best of luck, see you in hell. 

Functionally, the most important part of the ZAGGfolio is the keyboard. It’s not bad. It’s not a full keyboard that a laptop might have, but it’s not far from it. Most of the buttons and functions are there, just crammed into a smaller area. It’s comfortable, but right on the edge between comfortable and cramping. I have fairly large hands and if the keyboard was any smaller I wouldn’t be able to engage in any marathon writing sessions on it. But as it is, it’s perfectly fine. If you have normal hands it will be irrelevant. The keys along the top of the keyboard control things like brightness, music, screen sleep and home but I wish it had a page back and forward button for browsing on Safari. Other than that, I can’t see how any other buttons would be an improvement.

The keyboard works in tandem with the case to prop the iPad on it’s side, with a rubber protected groove at the top of the keyboard. It holds very firm and is big enough for work on a lap. Desk work is no problem. Moving it from one place to another is a bit risky since there’s no latch or anything holding it in place, just gravity and friction. The best way is to close the case then move it, or you risk a whole bunch of things going wrong. The case holds the iPad 2 in it’s landscape mode. You can remove the keyboard from the case and it will still function, and the groove will hold the iPad in the vertical orientation if you so desire. At that point it’s just the rubber groove holding the iPad and it’s much more unstable.
