also fair warning it’s been some time since i’ve played any of the dangan ronpa games and i haven’t been too active in the fandom as of late, so i may not remember some things super clearly. (as a result i think i just talked about komaeda entirely too much bc he’s my fave lmao.)

i’m sure this is a biased opinion on my part, but i loved the chapter 5 trial in sdr2. i also admittedly really enjoyed the first trial in both sdr2 and v3, because they both threw me for such a loop and i was not expecting how they turned out.

god, it’s hard to choose. i’m sad about a lot of them dying. i guess i felt pretty sad that rantaro died so early on in v3, after finding out that he had already gone through a previous killing game and survived. it sucks that he went through all of that just to be killed off immediately in the next one lol.

35. A character who should’ve got more character development?

the first person that popped into my mind here was owari. her character really didn’t interest me at all and she went through no actual development iirc, but after finding out that she was initially planned to be a big antagonist, it’s disappointing that instead she was sidelined to be a very one-dimensional character. it would’ve been cool if they at least did something with her.

again i am probably biased here but chapter 5 of sdr2, lol. i mean, komaeda specifically planned it out to be unsolvable, that’s pretty genius imo.

honestly the whole scene with komaeda in the final dead room, particularly the russian roulette moment. this boy is wild.

i always really loved nanami’s design (the one from sdr2), i’ve even cosplayed as her before bc i really dig the aesthetic.

90. Do you like Junko?

i do! i think she’s a really good and interesting villain, for a lot of different reasons, and i dig her aesthetic as well lol.

97. Overrated ship which is your NOTP?

i guess kamu//nami? i don’t know how popular that is but i don’t like it. i was going to say hina//nami as well but then i remembered i’ve written fic with that pairing before, lmao. but that was before dr3, to be fair. i feel like dr3 kind of tainted hina//nami for me.

100. Opinion on all the Protagonists!

naegi - i love this boy, he is so pure and good. i feel like i really didn’t care about him too much at first because he seemed so generic to me, but after playing through sdr2 and seeing him appear at the end, i had such a renewed appreciation for him for some reason. his capacity for hope and forgiveness is very admirable, and i like that he was really the only person junko was never able to get to falter.

hinata - like a lot of people, i was immediately drawn to how different he was from naegi, and found it endearing and amusing how he was kind of rude and sardonic and just so fed up with everyone’s shit. despite that, he had a lot of insecurities about being so ordinary, which i find kind of relatable. i also like how despite his complicated relationship with komaeda, he still tried to understand him. i love him a lot. 

komaru - i don’t really remember a lot about this game; i actually kind of forgot about it until i was sitting here thinking of all the dangan ronpa protagonists i knew of for this question, lol. but i liked komaru. she definitely went through a lot of development in the game and went from being a scared little girl to a hero, which was cool to see. i also thought her relationship with fukawa and syo was pretty cute.

saihara - words cannot describe how much i love this little emo boy. i’m not a huge fan of v3 in general, but i really liked him. first of all i thought the reveal that he was actually the real protag of the game was really cool and wild (even though it sucked kaede had to die). and once again he was a pretty different personality from the previous games, being so nervous and not confident in his abilities, and actually being depressed and fighting with falling into despair through the course of the game’s events. i found him to be the most realistic in terms of how an ordinary person would react to a killing game scenario. i also thought it was neat to finally have a protag who had an actual talent, and i’ve always had a soft spot for detective boys.

i know dangan ronpa has other installments and spin offs and stuff but i don’t really know any other protags well enough to give my opinion. (well, i did read some of dr0, but that was a while ago so i don’t remember much.)

C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.NieLan. I don’t dislike it. I also like it as a side ship. Just... never got much of an interest for them as main ship. 

D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.HuaLian...

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?Like... actively writing fics instead of just consuming, 8 months. Passively consuming... Pandora Hearts man... like... what... 7 years?

I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?Yuri on Ice. I didn’t really ship Victuri at first, cause their relationship dynamic seems really questionable to me in the first few episodes, but Tumblr keep insisting it’s the most progressive ship since sliced bread. So afterwards, after the revelation of how they met, even though their relationship is more balanced now, I no longer wanted to watch the show. 

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?I already answered Wei WuXian, but if you ever read Captive Prince... Oh my god. Oh my god Laurent. I actually really recommend it to you. I think you’d like it. Laurent is kind of like... a horrendous JC-JGY lovechild... which is like... a tiny human tornado fueled by spite. 

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves.Su She tried his best.

But like... unlike Laurent who is prickly and arrogant upfront, NMJ is really put off guard by how considerate and kind JGY is, and think JGY is the only good person in their court, until he learned that JGY murdered his brother...) 

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?NMJ died a virgin. 

W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom....Human character with animal behaviors (especially in ABO). I don’t mind it when characters turn into animals. But using animalistic descriptions on humanoid is just... a bit creepy for me.

Celesaya

1. My take on their canon relationship : I… don’t think they have one canon interaction, which is unfortunate.

2. Do I ship them : Hell yeah.

3. Reasons why I do/don’t ship them : So, the story is that I really liked their characters separately, but then I joined an Exchange where the person suggested I’d write some Celesaya, and I did, and it’s the best thing I’ve written since then, and that’s how I felt in love with their possible dynamics.

To be short, I’d say they are both very similar, in that they have an iron grip over their public image, for different reasons : Sayaka because she has to be a living doll, always smiling and playing a role under the spotlight, Celes because she can’t let anyone find a flaw in her armor as she navigates through muddy waters. With this sole description, can’t you just feel the good ship ?

4. Headcanon, if any : Sayaka not having to hide a boyfriend makes her life 100% easier, and no matter how many times she is seen with Celes on a date, no one thinks it’s anything more than friendship.

5. How much do I ship (%): Like, a lot ? 80% maybe ? Way too much for two girls who don’t speak together in canon but it’s a very important ship to me, and it really hits all my buttons.

Celes/Kirumi

1. My take on their canon relationship : They don’t have one. Crossover ship obliges…

2. Do I ship them : This is actually the first time I’m thinking about this ship. This is… pretty appealing, I have to say.

3. Reasons why I do/don’t ship them : I don’t ship them because I never see them around ! As expected for most crossover ships. I could totally ship them, because not only is their aesthetic on point, but their personnality would work so well. Kirumi is another character whose image is super-important, and she is very careful about everything she says or does : she also pretends being very humble and quiet when she really is full of herself.

It could end in disaster, because there is no telling how these personality would clash, but in any case, count me in for the ride !

4. Headcanon, if any : More a AU, but I could see them as the main characters of a gothic movie or novel, where the mysterious and deadly Celestia Ludenberg and her confidant and maid Kirumi Tojo arrives in town and… weird shit starts happening.

Some kind of Crimson Peak AU, minus the incest.

ANGIE IS TREATED SO FUCKING WRONGLY.

The narrative and framing are just so fucking unfair to Angie and it really pisses me off because she legit feels misrepresented more often not. And that’s just fucking rude.

Angie is explicitly referred to as manipulative but like… Her actual “manipulations” aren’t really leading people into doing what they otherwise WOULD NEVER fucking do like both Gonta and Kiibo clearly want the killings to stop and it’s not fucking like anyone else has any better ideas on how to go about doing that. Or any ideas at all, lbr. And Tsumugi is like…clearly just going along with it because…y’know.

As for Himiko, their relationship is seriously fine. Like Angie is legit trying to help Himiko find a peace of mind and a sense of direction where Himiko has like, none. Yes, it enables Himiko to be more passive and whatever but that’s more of Himiko’s own issues rather than anything Angie’s doing. And added to that, people forget that Angie DOESN’T just let Himiko sit back and do fucking nothing when the situation calls for the opposite as she immediately speaks up on Himiko being suspicious as hell in the Chapter 2 trial and points out, rightfully, that this is something Himiko needs to clear up. Something Himiko refuses to do. Again, not Angie’s fault. She’s actually trying to help and be supportive, but gets demonized because… Racism, let’s be real. (Yes, even if Angie’s writing in places is the result of racist stereotyping, she clearly is still getting mistreated based on the fact that she’s ‘foreign and weird’. Let’s not kid ourselves here.)

One other thing about Angie is that she actually is like, really incredibly reasonable. Pretty much every call she makes in Chapter 3 is logically sound and intelligent. She doesn’t trust Saihara’s group because said group includes Maki, the remorseless killer for hire. She destroys the flashlight because they disrupt the group’s harmony (and they’re built to do exactly that seeing as the memories are revealed to be fake down the line). She’s stricter on the group because she wants any would-be murderers to be restrained in what they could do with nighttime surveillance and less opportunity for anything unsavory. A lot of people get onto her for being ~controlling~ but…seriously? Isn’t that incredibly unfair? The situation is already really extreme and it’s not like she’s endangering them, like…the opposite? If anything it’s just inconvenient for the time being considering this lasts all of like…three days.

People really are so unfair to Angie, urgh. My girl is just trying her best to show support and keep everyone safe and she doesn’t get ANYONE killed so why is everyone so harsh? It’s unfair, it’s just so unfair.

Angie is honestly really interesting in how she’s always cheerful in spite of the situation and how, even though she’s ‘controlling’ and ‘manipulative’ (when tbh she really isn’t that bad, the narrative just claims she is because we’re meant to distrust her and that’s just shitty) she’s usually on the right track. She’s very intelligent and understands that the situation is dangerous but rather than letting paranoia consume her, she instead tries to make a safe environment for the others, including those she doesn’t trust and is aware that they don’t trust her, either. While she is still a little self-centered, she’s clearly trying to point her interests in the direction of the group’s well-being during the killing game rather than just trying to benefit herself directly. It would have been easy, for instance, for her to turn the group on Tenko after Tenko is discovered to be snooping around, but… She doesn’t. Instead she wants Tenko to still feel like she could be included even though she’s likely aware that Tenko hates her.

She’s a weird mixture of selfish and selfless and this is probably due to the writing in general not being that great, but I still find her incredibly interesting and engaging when it’s like…not clearly just there to be offensive. This is why she ended up being my favorite in spite of like…literally everything else working against her. She really is the unspoken heroine, similar to Komaeda but like…better because she’s the only one actively trying to take an active approach against potential killings…and yet gets vilified for it.

It’s bullshit. It really is. ANGIE DESERVES SO MUCH FUCKING BETTER.

imagine one day they open the gym and saw this giant poster of komaeda’s pictures in collage with big fonts saying “DO IT FOR HIM”, there’s mini posters neatly spread around the campus, no one knows and saw who put it up but they all agree anyway (spoiler alert it’s kamu)

I think he was sincerely and willingly an airhead before nmj died. Having seen through a war and what its done to people around him, he use to wholeheartedly agree that ignorance is bliss and wanted to remain that way. Anyone who thinks NHS was always scheming and calculating can fight me.
