it is the perfect day for waterbomb. yinuo had only spent about two hours on her outfit only to end up wearing pretty much what every other girl was wearing; swimsuit top, shorts, and a light coverup for when the confidence just wasn't hitting right. it doesn't stop her from absolutely gushing over her friend's outfit though, even if yulhee didn't exactly break the status quo either. "you're so hot!" yinuo squeals, pure excitement lighting up her face. "your tits look so good in that top, i'm not even kidding."
"c'mon, let's get something to drink. i'm dying out here and i'm not nearly wet enough to cool off," she grabs onto the other girl's arm excitedly, taking the lead despite having no idea where she's going. yinuo isn't exactly the best navigator to begin with and she certainly didn't memorize the map or anything beforehand. how hard can it be anyway? she manages to find a stand with sodas on display and gets in line before anyone else can sneak in before them. "would it be a waste if i bought a bottle of water just to dump it on my head?" she asks her friend with a grin. she won't actually do that. probably.
they've only just arrived and yinuo is already having fun, even if the heat is killing her slowly. it's the energy of the place, the music thump thump thumping in the background, and, frankly, the many attractive women walking around half-dressed to beat the heat. yinuo can't help but stop and stare as a woman she's never seen before with the prettiest bird tattoo on her shoulder walks by them. i'm so gay, she reminds herself for only the hundredth time. "oh, but was there someone in particular you wanted to see?" she turns back to her friend as the thought flits through her head. "we should make a plan, right?"
oddly enough, it felt like a blurābut thatās consistent with most of how yuwol spends his days, lately. he doesnāt really know what waterbomb is, nor was he actually interested to find out. but somehow, heās here anyway, in what feels like minimal clothing than what heās used to. after all, heās much more comfortable with wearing several layers, especially when heās wandering about outside. itās summer though, and thereās no way he could get away with his usual attire to this festival. heād probably suffer from heatstroke.
still, the biggest reason why heās here is because of @yulbe, who was very convincing in her attempt to drag yuwol out of⦠what was essentially jail. it isnāt as hard now, mostly because he had been steadily sticking to the curfew that was set out for him and attending every demanding lesson. sure, his eyebags are darker and he doesnāt even know what rest means now, at least itās getting relatively better.
āthis is so strangeā¦ā he comments aloud, but he doesnāt mean to be judgmental. āsorry, iāve just never really been to such a high energy⦠festival. not to this degree, anyway.ā he hums, scanning the area slowly, simply studying his surroundings. what else can he do? join in on the fun?
āis there a performance you have to watch? you can go, i donāt mind. iāll be fine on my own, i promise.ā half a life. thereās a high likelihood yuwol will get lost, or be crushed by the crowd. whichever comes first. or heād be the target of water guns, only because he doesnāt move around much.
it feels weird for yuji to be at a loss of words. nothing able to leave her mouth, just stuck in awe, eyes greedy and taking in every bit of yulhee that she can. before she canāt anymore, before itās too late.
with the sirens echoing around them, it very well could be their last. every moment spent feels like sheās on borrowed time. who could blame yuji for taking that fleeting moment to admire yulheeās beauty and excitement in that moment?
when the flush of her cheeks is a vermillion so pretty, she canāt turn her gaze away. the glow of the light behind her silhouette a similar color. she feels like sheās being mesmerized, hypnotized.Ā
ācāmon!ā the girl says, reaching forward to wrap her fingers around yujiās wrist and tug her along. and who is she to deny? tikis always been weak in the force of yulheeās joyā and this is no different. it doesnāt matter about the chaos occurring around them, as long as they can make it out together.
(and thatās the problem isnāt it? making it out together. alive.)
yulhee navigates these back streets like sheās known them her whole life, which would normally sound off warning alarms in her head, but every thought feels wiped clean. is this what it feels like to be powerless? she certainly feels like it. every alley they duck down, every corner they turnā it feels like a maze, and yuji steadily begins to feel like sheās being lured into a trap.
and maybe she is. but with yulheeās smile guiding the way, yuji doesnāt think she cares all that much.

ādang,ā stevie whistles, feigning surprise and awe as he stares at yulhee. āyou do all of that? talk about a busy bee!ā he leans further on the counter, nodding his head and watching each expression of glee overtake her face. itās sweet, and a part of him feels bad that heās conning her like this. not that she isnāt any of the things heās sayingā maybe she is! stevieās got not a damn clue, and heās not going to stick around to find out. āyouāre amazing me every minute of the moment.ā he says, shaking his head and batting his eyelashes at her.Ā
you do that too easily, heās been told before. smiles with teeth and laughter that seems interested even if stevie is anything but interested. itās fun, to play a roleā as long as he gets what he needs at the end of it. look out for the one and onlyā me, myself, and i.Ā
maybe in another universe heād be nicer. more genuine and earnest, like yulhee. but instead, stevieās rotten to his core and just blessed with a charming grin and a face that could make you sell your soul to the devil.Ā
too bad, so sad. thatās just the cards life has given them.
itās easy to wax poetry, strip out bullshit that falls off his tongue easily. like heās been doing it for years, like itās nothing but an artform perfected and mastered at this point. and itās even easier to reach forward in an attempt to brush a stray hair from the girlās face. itās supposed to be romantic, flirty in nature, only for stevie to knock over a glass of wine and have it spill all over her.Ā
āah! iām so sorry, iām so clumsyā oh my god,ā he laughs it off, voice squeaky, shoulders shaking with mirth as he rushes to grab napkins and shove them at her, going for more panicked than attempting to laugh at her. it is kind of funny though; if he were an outside, stevie would have snickered.
quickly getting up from his seat, he circles around and gently ushers her up, grimacing at the sight of her outfit stained with wine. what a shame, it had looked nice on her. though heās sure she can always replace it. āyou should probably go into the restroom, probably easier to clean up with the sink.ā he speaks, gentle and sweet. āand more towels. oh my god, iām so sorry about this, yulhee.ā he apologizes again, moving over to help her out of her seat, and gather her things.
he canāt help itā his fingers, so twitchy. if her wallet ends up in his hand and tucked into his sleeve, he blames it on his kleptomaniac tendencies.Ā
āiāll get you another one,ā he calls out to her before she hurries to the restroom, quickly wiping up the mess on the counter, though he keeps one eye on her until sheās all the way out of sight. pushing himself off the table, he gathers up the napkins from the mess and moves back over to the bar to replace her drink. stevie tugs out yulheeās wallet, pretending itās from the back of his pocket, and pays with yulheeās money, making a show and muttering about how clumsy and how much of a loser he is to the barkeep.Ā
as he returns back to the table, yulheeās new glass in hand, she still isnāt back yet. which is bad for herā probably because the stain is pretty bad. or sheās scathing and cursing his name before coming back with composure. either orā stevieās not sticking around to see the aftermath.Ā
he takes a hefty sip from the glass, going to pat his mouth dry with a napkin. his lips come back in the form of a wine pressed mouth mark, and he smiles at it, amused. ācute,ā he mutters to himself, shaking his head and giggling at himself as he sets it down next to her glass. reaching for her wallet once more, stevie plucks out every credit or debit card he sees, and takes about half of the cash inside. he leaves enough to get her home, because come on! heās a gentleman at the very least.Ā
and then he tosses the wallet on the table, humming a tune as he turns and walks right out of the establishment.
she should have known it was going to end this way.
could she be blamed, though? she's greedy when it comes to yulhee. when yulhee looks so happy to be with her, flirt and flaunt her off to anyone who will listen. yulhee, so earnest with her affection and adoration. sua's never deserved it, no matter how patient yulhee has been with her. when she's had too much to drink, and she self-destructs-- yulhee patching her back together.
sua doesn't deserve her. not in the beginning, certainly not in their rose colored prism in the middle, and not now.
and she feels terrible for it. because it's not as if it wouldn't ever be in the cards. but when yulhee falls to one knee, her heart doesn't skip-- it drops. seeing the ring nearly makes her throw up. because they're surrounded by yulhee's family, her friends, her loved ones. and sua is here, center stage to one of her worst nightmares come to life.
because sua isn't ready for marriage. her silence is deafening in the hall, the only thing playing is muffled voices and whispers, the sound of the radio churning out a tune that sua swears in the moment sounds warped. maybe it's the moment. maybe it's her.
"i..." she starts, when the silence bears too long and she can't stand to look at the expression on yulhee's face. there's a lump in her throat that's tough to swallow. anger licks at her gut, but it's weak; an initial reaction to wanting to cry that's beginning to overwhelm her.
she'd be miserable. a ring so pretty and a woman so beautiful on her arm is a dream to most people. not to sua, not when there's so much else she can do right now. it's selfish, she's selfish. she can't put herself through that. she can't put yulhee through that. she just can't.
"i'm sorry," her voice breaks on the end, hand tugging to her chest as she shakes her head. the champagne in her system causes her to stumble. she feels like she's running-- and in a way she is. like sua always does, time and time again.
and then she's gone. spun on her heel and through the mess of people.
it's become an endless cycle by now, one that vinn can't seem to escape. it always starts the same way tooāvinn does something yulhee doesnāt like and suddenly itās the end of the world. her eyes flash with anger, and her voice rises, sharp and cutting. she gets upset at him for the same things she does too, but when he does it, heās in the wrong. even now she wonāt allow him to get a word out to explain himself. sheās yelling at him so loud that heās certain their neighbors will call the cops on them again. her tirade grows more ferocious when she brings up his past mistakes. she always keeps them as spare ammo for their next fight, ready to point out all his wrongs and drown out her own mistakes.
āwhy do you always blame me for everything?ā vinnās voice cuts through her insults, his fists clenched at his sides. he finally wants to express what has been running through his mind for the past year they have been dating. heās tired of it; everything about their relationship exhausts him. heās reached a point where he doesn't know if he can endure further exhaustion just for loveās sake.
yulhee reacts predictably, her eyes widening before tears spill down her reddened cheeks. she knows those tears usually work, making vinn feel guilty for even voicing any form of blame her way. her body trembles with practiced vulnerability, a tactic to regain the upper hand.
any other time vinn would have given in and apologized for whatever mistake he had made, but today he has reached the edge of the cliff. if only they could go back to how things used to be at the start of their relationship. yulhee used to be so sweet, but it must have only been a facade to lure vinn into all this.
heās simply tired of feeling like heās constantly in the wrong, as if nothing he does will ever be right for yulhee. he feels like a disappointment and a failure, all because she always has to point out his mistakes. he has tried explaining before how it hurts him, but she never cares enough, always shifting blame and playing the victim.
āletās break up. do whatever you want, i donāt care anymore.ā yulheeās words are said so easily as if she doesnāt feel the same type of love that vinn feels for her. he should be used to it by now, but it still stings every time she tells him to break up whenever they have an argument.
his own eyes become watery, but he doesnāt allow himself to spill any tears. he wonāt allow her to bring him to his knees againānot anymore. āfine, letās break up.ā itās the first time heās agreeing, and perhaps he had seen this outcome a long while ago. things between them have always been rather predictable. even now, heās not surprised by yulheeās nonchalant reaction as she walks out of their living room, knowing full well that vinn will stay with her anyway.
but this time, he remains standing, watching her retreating figure with a new determination hardening in his chest.
