For the character writing meme: Rin. But since that's an obvious choice...if it's all right with you, in addition to how you'd normally write her, how would you write a Rin who's in love but trying to hide it (whether it's just from being an embarrassed shoujo, or because she's crushing on someone she's convinced will never love her back, or something idk). I see a lot more "Maki is gay for Rin" than the other way around - maybe because Rin's usually more honest with herself?
ahh this is such a thoughtful question, thank
the two things i keep in mind when it comes to writing Rin in romantic situations is how sensitive she really is beneath her obnoxiously energetic exterior (an embarrassed shoujo, like you said) and how straightforward she is with showing affection in general towards others. honestly i’ve written her on both sides of the scale, from being shy and hesitant to shamelessly declaring her love, and that versatility is what makes her one of my faves to write.
because she’s not just “nya nyaaa so energetic nyaa”, she’s also very self-conscious in spite of all the ridiculous things she does and very self aware of her faults even if some of those faults don’t exist (believing she’s not feminine vs admitting she’s not very smart). but!! she’s not the type to openly wallow over her insecurities, hence why she’s always so cheerful and prefers to put others before herself. i think that’s also one of her faults, her tendency to gloss over unpleasant things and pretend like they’re not there.
SO ANYWAY i did write her with an unrequited crush once (in an rp not a fic). i don’t think Rin is very good at hiding things in the long run so it didn’t take long for her to confess, and when the other girl didn’t return her feelings, Rin did her best to pretend like everything was normal even though there was obviously an awkwardness left between them. she basically bottled up her feelings and tried not to let them get in the way of their friendship, but ultimately that all backfired on her tho that’s a whole different story. she’s someone who’s always so upbeat and cheerful, so dealing with such negative feelings really throws her off her game. it does leave a lot of potential for character development, though.
so yeah, like any normal person Rin has her reservations and exceptions to her honesty, since not everything is in black and white. it’s fun to put her in different dynamics since she obvs wouldn’t behave the exact same way with every girl she’s shipped with. with someone like Hanayo or Maki, she would be much more straightforward and honest with things, but with someone like that other girl, she was more cautious about where she tread.
this is getting long so im gonna stop here, wipes sweat from forehead
