Was watching the magic school mlp eps and it doesn't surprise me that I see like ZERO discussion about these flops anywhere online. Like I don't hate their idea in concept but as for like a pseudo mane 6 meant to carry on the mantle they come really short and frankly their designs don't help at all.
I guess take this as something done in spite cause I find they were designed without any group cohesion in mind (plus personality wise they are...uhh well pinkie pie lite, rainbow dash 1, rainbow dash 2, one that speaks in third person, fluttershy lite, and background pony)

The role of bringing the three pony tribes back together being given to Sandbar and two random unnamed children at Twilight's school in the finale is the perfect representation of how confused the show had gotten at that point. Roles that should've been given to other characters (Spike being the first nonpony connected to the Tree of Harmony, the CMC being the ones to bring the three tribes together) were given to these new characters in order to poorly justify their existence in the narrative.

I would actually argue that that issue started in season 7, specifically with Sunburst being the one to find Starswirl the Bearded's lost journal instead of Twilight. All of the rest of the Mane Six retrieve their Pillar counterparts artifacts… except for Twilight. It was most likely done just to justify Sunburst's existence in the narrative.
I think the only times the CMC participated in a major event in the show was when they indirectly freed Discord in season 2 premiere and them leading Cozy Glow somewhere else and getting trapped in a closet in season 8 finale. And an unknown thing that gave them a stained glass window in the future. Alright.
I guess if we're getting technical, Spike actually was the first nonpony connected to the Tree, since it summoned him to fix his own friendship problem in Triple Threat and it created a throne for him in the Friendship Castle (although the throne thing could just be because the Tree's sentient enough to know he's Twilight's righthand guy). It's just that it wasn't given the same fanfare within the show as what happened with the Student Six.
The original cast being sidelined in their own show just to validate a new gimmick/character actually started in season 6 with Flurry Heart and Starlight, but I tolerated it back then because they still added something new.
