Hi! How would you think teen/young Severus would react if a Hufflepuff of his age with a similar background (bullied, poor, history of domestic abuse) but with a lot of energy try to befriend him and give him some love because he's the only one that understands what does it feels like?
Well it's a bit hard to imagine what he thought about the other Houses (we're very aware of the rivalry between the lions and snakes but how the other two were perceived is a bit of a mystery) but since he was friendless, I don't think it would have mattered too much.
If that person tried to befriend him at the beginning of his time at Hogwarts (not too much bullying yet and still hope in the future and his social life), I think he'd have appreciated it a lot. He would have been quite awkward - don't forget he never really interacted with other children apart from Lily and Petunia - and surely overwhelmed but hopefully with time both of them would have adjusted.
And hanging out with someone who could understand what he went through would be invaluable to him. It would take time for him to open up (maybe for both of them) since he'd be surrounded by middle or upper class people and clearly you don't share this lightly.
If that person tried to befriend him out of the blue later tho, he'd be very wary. I think that in third year he'd be already quite unpopular and would think this is a joke or a ploy.

⢠You meeting Severus for the first time, Correction: You TALKING to Severus for the first time in 4 years. You had always avoided him but now..
⢠Warnings: None
⢠Word Count: 906
(part 1/4)
The cauldron in front of you bubbled, you sat on the stool stirring the spoon around with your wand. Your hair sat frizzing up due to the humidity of the room. You were bored to say the least, in your boredom you scanned the room when your eyes met a pair the room. They were a deep brown from where you were sitting, at first it didnāt register who you were looking at but then a second later it clicked in your head. These illustrious eyes belonged to Severus Snape, a boy your age with long, thick, black hair that swooped in front of his face when he looked down. He had a large, hooked nose and thin lips. Yeah, he was attractive to you, but youā never talk to him! Youāre complete opposites! You realised you had been staring for too long because your potion began bubbling over the side and was now green instead of dark umber.
āShit,ā you said out loud, pushing all your books away from the spillage and stepping backwards, the cauldron began melting before your eyes, āWhat did I do?ā you asked out loud, there was a small group of girls around you. A ravenclaw girl seemed to be crying over your potion which you didnāt understand why, Her Gryffindor friend was talking to you, āItās okay Y/N! Mistakes happen and they can usually be fixed butā¦I donāt know if your cauldron is going to survive this one honey,ā
āOh its fine, Iād rather everyone else be safe that have a cauldron,ā You levitated the cauldron away from the table and into the āscrap cornerā as your class all liked to call it. You had to get a new cauldron from over behind Severus which was going to be fun. You walked over, hair frizzed up, robes on the floor by my table in a heap; you were nervous cause you knew youād have to speak to him.
āHi Severus,ā you said awkwardly, crouching down to rummage for a new cauldron in the huge shelving unit behind where he was sat.
āYou stirred it too much,ā he said quickly. āYou were only meant to stir it 8 times, you stirred it 9,ā
āI didnāt exactly mean to, I left my book in my dorm, so I was just looking around and copying everyone else, I guess I shouldāve been copying you huh?ā
āThatās not what Iām saying at all, Iām just saying, you stirred it wrong.ā He turned around to look down at you, his hair falling in front of his deep eyes. You looked back at him, looking into his eyes.
āThen help me,ā were the words that followed what he had said, you didnāt mean to say it, but it happened. You didnāt regret what you had said because you wanted to talk to Severus now more than ever.
āFine,ā He replied sharply, āGet the cauldron at the back, its one of the best.ā
āThank you,ā you replied, reaching all the way to the back and grabbing onto it, yanking it out and placing it on the table, āSo, brainiac, where do I start?ā
āCrush up the beans and put them into the cauldron, Iāll fill it with water and put it on the flame to boil.ā He instructed, I pressed the edge of the blade against the beans one by one, crushing them as Severus put water in the cauldron.
āAguamenti,ā He said, water shot from his wand into the cauldron as it sat above the flame. āOkay now put those in and start adding in slowly the lacewing flies,ā
āLike that?ā you asked dropping in the beans and slowing tapping the lacewing fly bottle against the rim of the cauldron, fluttering in slowly.
āYes,ā He grabbed a wooden spoon and stirred the mixture anti clockwise 3 times. āYou know, earlier you might not have gotten so distracted if you werenāt staring at me, why were you staring at me?ā He asked.
āWellā¦Youāre interesting, you donāt seem to have many friends and I want to know why, youāre a pretty nice person.ā
āI do have friends!ā He said, stopping what he was doing and jerking his head towards me. āIām friends with Lily Evans! Sheās my friend, so donāt just make assumptions, I just like being by myself,ā Was his next reply
āI know! But you just seem to like being alone and I thought wellā¦You might like some company?ā you asked, smiling at him, āI promise Iām quiet! You wonāt even know Iām there half of the time, I promise! Youāre just really interesting and Iād quite like to be your friend!ā
He sat in silence thinking for a minute or two, looking at me. It felt like he was inspecting you, weighing up your pros and cons. As far as you were aware you didnāt have many cons.

~*~*~*~*~ *~
There was a strange static in the air this morning, one Severus couldn't quite place. He brushed his long hair back behind his ear and listened in to the hushed whispers of passing classmates.
"...Beauxbaton, can you believe it?"
"Nice to not know someone for a change - "
Beauxbaton? Severus gathered they were talking about a new teacher perhaps? Although it wasn't that odd to get new professors in the middle of the school year. Just last year the Dark Arts professor was promptly replaced when he went mad after a spell backfired on him; In fact, every year there was a new one.
It was strange that the new teacher should be a transfer from another school such as Beauxbaton... Maybe they were fired and no one else wanted them, must be down on their luck. And if that is the case, how very fitting for Hogwarts, home of inadequacy.
Severus, still deep in his bitter thoughts, almost tripped over the shoe that had extended out in front of him. He caught himself and whirled around angrily. "Watch it!" he growled, straightening.
James Potter smirked. "Oh, Snivellus. Didn't see you there.ā His Gryffindor friends snickered behind him, bolstering his ego. "I'd get along to class if I were you. Wouldn't want to be late on your first day back."
Severus grit his teeth and did everything he could to not growl his displeasure of being in so close proximity to the pinnacle of mediocrity that was Potter. It had been a week after winter holidays had ended but after another nearly fatal encounter with Black, heād been forced to stay in the Hospital Wing un-zippering his mouth and a couple of fingers before being allowed back.
The memory of the experience made his knees weak, making keeping his riled demeanor that much harder. He was lucky he'd had the foresight to cover his nose before Black unleashed his hex. It wasnāt a quick run from the lake to the nurse, and he certainly wouldn't have made it with his nostrils zippered together as well.
"Mind your own business, Potter." Severus spat out his name like rotten apples, furrowing his brows in an attempt to seem more threatening however he could not help but notice the hallways getting emptier by the second. He knew better than to get caught alone with Potter.
He laughed and turned to catch up with his friends. Severus watched him go, only relaxing his shoulders after Potter had rounded the corner and disappeared out of sight. The hall was empty.
He turned and continued down the corridor when his hearing perked at the scuff of loud footsteps. He whirled around, hand plunging into his robes, but it was too late.
"Levipeds!"
Severus' head snapped back as his feet whipped out from under him. He hung limp in the air, watching his wand roll away on the stone floor. His hair nearly touched the dirty ground.
James laughed. "Welcome back, Snivellus!"
He closed his eyes as his boiling blood rushed to his head. He was hanging upside down in the air, alone in the empty corridor. He couldn't scream for help, he'd just get yelled at for disturbing lessons, and he couldn't reach his wand - as long as his limbs might be, his wand might as well have rolled down into the dungeons. He'd have to hang there until classes were over or one of the portraits decided to help him out for once.
"Eh... Excuse moi?" A quiet voice wrapped in a thick French accent broke the silence.
His eyes flew open and stared straight into the face of a beautiful but completely unfamiliar student. She bent down low to meet his eyes. She must be the mystery person from Beauxbaton, the new student as it turned out.
This was worse, so much worse than being caught by anyone else in the school - except for a very select few. Severus looked around in search of anything that might make this all less embarrassing.
"You need help, no?" Her voice was more confident this time, laced with a hint of friendly amusement.
"Uhh..." He met her eyes and hoped this new student would excuse his red face to be due to all his blood rushing down.
She straightened and pointed behind him. "This is your wand? I'll give to you?" His wand was in his hand with one quick flick of her own.
His eyebrows automatically shot up at her use of nonverbal spells. "Thanks," he tried swallowing but ended up coughing. He covered his mouth and performed the counter-hex, dropping to the floor with a grunt.
She rushed forward, looping her arm through his and helping him up to his feet. She laughed and dusted the dirt off his back while he stood paralyzed.
"Better, no?" she smiled, facing him a foot from his stiff figure. "I'm new seventh-year transfer... And you?"
For a moment his mouth opened but no words flew out, and then all at once words poured out as fast as if under a curse. "I'm - oh - yes you're from Beauxbaton, right? Yeah - er - yes, seventh-year as well."
Her hands flew up and she waved them in front of herself with a laugh. "Slow please!" she laughed again. "One more time?"
Severus gave an awkward laugh that matched hers and nodded. "I'm also a seventh-year."
"Oh!" she held out a paper and pointed down to the class he was late for. "I am so lost! You help me now? Oui?"
She smiled up at him and his heart nearly leaped out of his mouth. He nodded quickly, "Yes - er - oui, I'll help you... Actually, that's my class too..."
"Oh!" Her smile widened, "I need partner for the class! You have one?"
For once Severus thanked his unlucky past self. His time in the hospital wing all week meant everyone would be already partnered up. "No, I don't..." his face flushed red again and he cleared his throat, looking away. "We could be partners?"
"Bon! Lead the way, partner," she motioned for him to lead, keeping a very close pace next to him as they walked. "I am lucky to find you, did not know anyone yet. You are only third person met!"
He gave her a small smile as they walked together, but he knew it wouldn't take long for her to find out his status at the school. Being a new student, he was sure sheād make all the friends she could ever want by the end of the day. Then she'd reconsider her luck after everyone tells her all about her lab partner, 'Snivellus'.
~*~*~
They made it to class late. The professor looked up and frowned, ready to tell them off when Severus' new āfriendā spoke up.
"Excuse us, Professor, I am new and got lost."
The professor sighed and waved his hand, giving her a pass. "And I see you're back Mr. Snape. Get to your seats, you'll both be working together - get moving."
The two back seats were empty and Severus was glad to be away from the front for once. His new partner set down her things, and as she bent to pick up her books Severus caught a glimpse of Sirius Black glaring at him from the front, a seat behind where Severus had been sitting the last term. Black had anticipated his return and was obviously annoyed with the change in seating.
"What may I call you, Mr. Snape?" The new student whispered, giving him her full attention despite the lesson continuing.
"S-Severus." He looked around to make sure no one was paying attention to him. He'd die of embarrassment if they started teasing him in front of her for daring to open his mouth. "And you?"
She smiled. "Severus Snape? That's a beautiful name." She looked back up to make sure their conversation was still private and turned back. She reached up and gripped his tie, pulling him towards her. She leaned and held a hand to his ear, moving her lips inches from his ear. "(Y/n) (L/n)."
Severusā heart beat faster than it ever had before. The immense drumming in his ears almost made it impossible to hear her whispers. When she released him, he turned to look at her, feeling his face heat up either from proximity or from her warm breath flowing over his face. "(Y/n)... Good to know." He swallowed and realized he had not moved since she had pulled him towards her. He would have felt like an idiot if she wasnāt looking at him so playfully.
"You gonna kiss her, Snivellus?"
Severus pulled back quickly and clenched his jaw at Black.
The professor smacked Sirius' head with a roll of parchment. "Mr. Black, disturb my class again and I'll assign you an essay for every night this week." Severus smirked. "And you, Mr. Snape," the Professor smacked the board, creating a puff of chalk, "- will hand me your notes tomorrow before class - legible notes, might I add."
Severus nodded as the class snickered and turned away from (Y/n). The rest of the lesson went by agonizingly slow. Severus counted the seconds until he could run away to the library, away from taunting eyes. He hated himself for turning so red, but he hated Black even more for making him the fool.
~*~*~
~*~*~
You could tell the boy, 'Mr. Black', had embarrassed Severus greatly. He was hunched over his parchment, focused completely on the professor's words, and never once looking back up at you.
You read the words on the board but soon your eyes ventured down to look at the tall lanky boy currently trying to visibly shrink in his seat. The moment shared between you both still played on your mind. He had beautiful long lashes and deep dark eyes to match. It had been fun to see him so flustered over you, but the guilt of what you'd caused sat heavily on your chest. That boy had noted Severus had been in the perfect position to kiss her, which... did she kind of wish he had?... Just to see - for just a curious taste.
You didn't know what specifically was so alluring about Severus, but you could imagine yourself wrapped in his arms, pulling on his long hair, biting his lips, and hearing that deep voice of his purring for more. Something about him - or maybe everything about him - made you wonder how gentle those hands of his could be.
The bells rang in the distance, marking the end of the lesson. You packed your things and sat waiting for Severus to do the same. He was slow at first and then after a quick flick of his eyes up to you hurried along.
You stood at the same time and motioned for the door, scrambling to translate your thoughts into English. "Lunch now? We can sit together?"
People filed out of the class, which Severus watched closely before turning back to her and answering. "Look, this isn't the only time⦠I'm not someone to hang out with unless you like hexes and spells to be thrown in your direction."
You could see the hurt in his eyes, the way his brows furrowed, and his down-turned eyes filled with tears that wouldn't fall. Before you could bring yourself to respond, he sighed shakily, giving you pause.
"It's not your fault... I'll show you down and then I suggest you forget about being friends." He pulled open the door and held it open for you without meeting your eyes.
What could you say to him? You stepped out into the corridor, contemplating how to phrase what you were thinking when laughter pulled your focus.
"I see you've met our Snivellus." The stupid boy, Black, came forward talking to you but keeping his attention on Severus. He had long curly hair nearly as long as Severus' and was taller, with proud shoulders held in a loose demeanor that still made him seem important in some way. His eyes shifted to you, "Hope he didn't drip any snot on you while he tried for a kiss."
You scoffed, āYou do not understand what you saw. Please leave us alone.ā
āLove, maybe youāre not understanding me. For your own safety I insist YOU leave this sniffling slime alone.ā Black took a step closer.
Severus pulled out his wand but held it low, at the ready in an instant. "Iām done with your games. Unlike you, you nitwitted tower troll, I have places to be." He finally glanced your way, "Excuse me," and made to leave.
Black blocked his way, laughing at the now pointed wand in Severusā hand. "Go ahead, Iāll be glad if you finally get expelled for using wands in the corridors. Mine's not even on me."
You eyed the smirk on his face and the tiny shift of his hand towards his trousers pocket. Was that a lie then? Whatever the case, you had enough of this game too. "My friend, Severus, is showing me to lunch. We are going now." You stepped between Severus and Black, giving the taller boy an annoyed look.
"Iām telling you, be careful," Black chuckled. "He might try to kiss you again if youāre too nice."
You paused and stepped back, looking up at Severus, whose eyes were fixed on Black, staring daggers into him. You bit your lip and chuckled the same way Black had, finding a different kind of amusement than him in this situation. "I hope he will."
Severus' head snapped to you, his cheeks slowly going a light shade of pink all over.
Black made a disgusted sound and a show of his fake nausea. āDarling, I donāt think I understood you correctly. Check your dictionary and if thatās not the problem maybe your eyes.ā
This boy was really getting on your nerves now. If youād been back at Beauxbaton youādāve already hexed him into a soggy pile of starter yeast, baked him into the perfect Pain au Levain, and chucked him out the tallest tower window. āMove it,ā you made sure your French accent coated the word heavily.
Severusā hand wrapped around your arm, pulling you back. He kept his wand and eyes trained on Black but spoke to you. āGo down to lunch. Iāll stay here to have the chat Black so desperately wants to have with me.ā He looked up again, āLet her leave.ā
Black smiled, āThatās fine. Been meaning to ask how your winter holiday was after I last saw you.ā
You turned to Severus, ready to protest when the door to the classroom opened, cutting Black off. You all stood very still and awkward, hoping to hide the atmospheric hostility that had been created.
The Professor locked the door with a flick of his wand and looked at everyone with concern. "Off to lunch, no need wandering the corridors. Now." He ushered everyone down the stairs, walking close behind in equal silence.
You reached the floor second to last, after Black and then Severus, and pulled on Severus' arm the second your Professor had turned towards the staff room. You kept your hand on him to make sure he didnāt decide to leave before you could talk to him. Before Black could step towards you to continue the āconversationā, other Gryffindor students pulled him towards a small crowd gathering across the floor. Whatever it was seemed to be of higher interest and he left with only single backwards glance.
You both watched him go dissolve into the rowdy group and suddenly the air around you shifted. Severus turned instantly, searching your eyes with an intensity you could almost feel. You blushed and slid your hand down his sleeve and lingered on his bare hand. Neither of you said a word but the electricity connecting your eyes and the comfortable silence that enveloped you both spoke volumes. "We could eat together, no?"
His eyes settled on your hand still on his until you let go. "Oui," he whispered with a smile pulling at his lips. āLunch then.ā
As you both walked on, he slowly crept closer with every step, making your shoulders brush against his arm. His pinky tickled the skin on your wrist, making you cough to hide a giggle as you entered the Great Hall. Your eyes flickered up at his and you smiled, seeing a gentle blush and an even gentler smile on his face.
Requested- Can i ask for a Ravenclaw student with an immense crush on Severus Snape? How would he react? S / o is a very nice girl and seems to understand very well the solitude he has to endure.
A/n- Okay, this is my first snapeĀ imagine, and i hope you guys like it :)

You are waiting for your friend Severus to finish his DefenseĀ Against the Dark Arts class outside of the classroom. And just as you expect, he is one of the lasts to exit the room.
āHey, can I speak to you for a second?ā
āNo.ā He looks at you for a while before answering and walking away. You catch up to him.
āI told you, for the hundredth time, that I fancy you. Alright?ā You hiss desperately, looking around you in case anyone heard you. Severus is right across you with his arms folded. A heavy hint of distrust is plastered on his face.
āHow do I know this is some sort of sick joke, y/n?ā He asks as his eyes go dark.Ā āHow do I know that you didnāt just get close to me all those times during astronomy not to befriend me but to pull out a prank?ā Severus shakes his head and turns around, walking away. You let out a huge breath, throwing your arms in the air. You run your fingers through your hair before rushing up to the dark-haired boy in front of you and pushing him into an empty hallway.Ā āWhat the hell?ā
āThis is not a joke or anything you say, Sev.ā You lower your head before staring into his eyes.Ā āAstronomy class is my favourite class because of you.ā
He looks at you, and his eyes softens for a second before going hard again.Ā āYou know, you are really good at this, Iāll give that to you.ā He tries to get away from you, but you press him harder against the wall.
āI know Iāve hurt you before, and I was an idiot, but Iām not lying. I understand that you have bad experiences with trust!ā You frown, and he simply scoffs.Ā āDonāt believe me? Feel for yourself.ā You take his hand and put it on top your crazily beating heart.Ā āMy heart canāt lie.ā
Severus visibly freezes for your sudden move, then his eyes widen.Ā āYouāre not lying?ā
āThatās what Iāve been trying to tell you for the past few days.ā You say sadly.
A look of guilt washes over Severusā face.Ā āIāmāIām sorry. I didnāt think thatāā
āāThat Iām not a pathological liar?ā You joke, chuckling.
āYeah, I guess.ā He laughs genuinely, something you havenāt seen him do in a while.Ā āFancy heading to Potions together?ā
āOf course.ā You grin, giving him a peck on the cheek, which resulted in a massive blush on his face.

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Severus was bent over his journal, quill scribbling across the pages at rapid speeds, feather dancing through the air as Professor Flitwick went on and on about the creation of information charms. Words like āimpossibleā and āfar too advancedā only made him roll his eyes. If wizards like the Great Ciera Vela and Sir Wicksley Brightington could create inventions such as the early telling clocks or talking chips at mere fourteen years of age, then who gave Flitwick the right to deem it impossible for a seventh year to create one?
Severus jerked his head up at the sudden bang of the classroom door as it flung open, almost giving himself a horrible headache at the sudden motion.
Flitwick jumped on his stool and turned wrathfully. āWho is interrupting my lecture!ā A little man, half the size of Flitwick himself, came storming inside just as annoyed with himself as Flitwick was of him, and held up a bouquet of flowers. āAh⦠alright, alright, get on with it.ā
The dwarf, dressed in a bright red robe with fake angel wings and a halo too small for his head, approached a Hufflepuff boy on the opposite end of the class. He pulled up his robe, which revealed his real clothes underneath ā grass-stained trousers and steel-toed shoes ā and took out a folded note from his pocket. āOh Huegert,ā he began in a raspy voice, reading out the poem as unenthusiastically as possible.
Severus groaned and sat back in his seat. His eyes narrowed in dislike at the Hufflepuff who didnāt seem to care that his admirer had interrupted class. As annoying as it was to hear Flitwick squeak away on a tangent about the creation of the type of charm they were learning about, he much preferred it than this.
The dwarf cleared his throat as thunderously as a rockslide down a mountain and bowed, ready to head out after completing his job.
āPsst,ā a voice whispered from the back. āSnivellus!ā
Severus ignored them, and turned to his fellow Slytherins instead. They all looked as annoyed as he felt and smirked when he caught their eye. The Slytherins had their own way of showing their āadmirationā and it didnāt include embarrassing poems or gawky flowers.
āSnivellus!ā The voices behind him snickered. āWhereās your flowers?ā
āDoesnāt anyone like you?ā
Flitwick went on with the lecture and Severus went back to writing feverishly until class was over. He packed his things and followed his friends out the door, keeping at their heels. He pulled out his scarf and wrapped it around once, twice, as the chill from the open arched windows blew through.
āLetās head down to Hogsmeade. I heard the Three Broomsticks is serving red butterbeer today, bet itāll taste different.ā
āIt never does. Not the green ones, or the purple ones ā ā
Severus slung his pack over his shoulder and followed his friends down the corridors, out the castle doors, and down the frozen lawn. They talked about food, their significant others, and the gifts theyād given and received. Some had gotten golden cufflinks, diamond pressed watches with metal so smooth it could reflect a candleās light from a mile away, while others had received nice ties or new shoes. Theyād given expensive bracelets with dancing charms, glittering jeweled necklaces, and remarkable earrings that reformed with every wear so as to never be the same twice.
āSo howās it possible to make those woodchips talk to each other from anywhere in the world?ā the tallest of them asked.
Severus pulled his eyes up from his scrappy shoes and looked at the Slytherin. He was referring to the talking chips. āTheyāre cut from the same wood, precisely from the opposite sides of the tree and bound with a complicated spell.ā
The Slytherins around him nearly jumped, forgetting Severus was among them.
The tallest one, Zander Ervingwell, whose father owned the Daily Prophet, rubbed his chin and smiled. āThat so? Then, could we chop any of these tree,ā he motioned at the forest as they walked down the trail to Hogsmeade, āand make one of them?ā
The others turned to Severus and he reveled in their attention. He kept his face straight and shook his head. āWe could. If we could get the charm from Flitwick.ā
Zander nodded thoughtfully. The rest reformed around him and they kept walking down the trail until they reached the popular little inn. They pulled the door open and were met by warmth, the smell of roast turkey, and wary eyes from the students of other houses.
Severus took his seat at the table they crowded around and refrained from ordering the red butterbeer they were all looking forward to. He pulled the strap of his bag over his head and shoved his patched up bag under the table.
āSee? Tastes different.ā
āIād cut my tongue off and have Pomfrey regrow it if I were you ā ā
Harold Binny and Regis Dunmarten always tended to natter about anything they could disagree on that held little to no importance. They never discussed anything with each other that could ever lead to an agreement, and Severus knew they took after their fathers, who were avid Wizengamot councilmen.
Zander looked to the others, Marcos Jugson ā one of the many brothers ā who was looking at a group of Ravenclaw girls, and Mumford Wilkes who stared impassively at the dark oak table. Zander turned to Severus. āYou think you could make one, Severus?ā
Severus stammered. āWe wouldnāt be allowed to chop down any tree ā And Iād need the charmā¦ā
āIf youāre so smart,ā Mumfordās eyes pierced through Severusā defenses and made him want to dissolve into the air. āWhy donāt you make one. Youāre always saying you can make spells but when we ask to see them theyāre never ready.ā
Severus wanted to disappear from the very seat he sat in. In this moment he much preferred his usual spot, behind them all, hidden from view of their scrutinizing eyes; but now every one of them looked his way, expectantly. āI can make one,ā he said, as evenly as he could muster. They were all rich purebloods who could smell unease and weakness from a hundred yards away. āEasily.ā
āYou could get in trouble, expelled even, with the way information charms work. Sure youāre not scared?ā Marcos folded his arms, eyeing him down.
Severus hated him. Almost as much as he hated Lupin and Pettigrew, but not nearly as much as Black and Potter. After all, Marcos had saved him on more than one occasion with his mere presence. And unfortunately, Severus knew what his words hid. It had been just yesterday Marcos had walked in on him pinned to the ground by a group of sixth years, three standing around with their wands drawn on him while their two ābraverā friends tried singeing his eyebrows off. As soon as Marcos had hexed them off, the minute their grubby hands had released his robes, Severus had crawled away behind Marcos.
It was a stupid moment of weakness fueled by fear driven by the sight of the flames bursting out of wands so close to his eyes. A mistake heād let himself make. Severus clenched his jaw and looked him steadily in the eyes. āOf course not,ā he gritted out.
Distant laughter caught Marcosā attention for a split second, and when he turned back his lips quirked up in a smile. āWhy donāt you give us a taste of your bravery then? An assurance youāll do it.ā He jerked his head back, motioning at the table of Ravenclaw girls. āItās Valentineās day, so why donāt you ask one of them to be yours? Its only just midday. Iām sure one of themās not yet taken.ā
Severus kept his face even and hands clenched tight under the table, unwilling to let them see how badly they trembled. He risked a glance at Zander, who looked at him with folded arms and an equally level expression. Harold and Regis exchanged similar looks, eyebrows raised, and Mumford smirked. There was always a risk when hanging around certain groups of friends, and this one constantly pushed him to the brink of humiliation.
He stood and made his way around their table to face the crowded space of the bar. Everyone was distracted, talking to other patrons or spilling drink down their faces. There was a stool knocked to the ground between him and the girls who only knew he existed from either rumor or witnessing one of his countless humiliations at the hands of Potter or Black. Theyād either know him as Snivellus, or as the Slytherin who knows as many curses and hexes as there were words in a dictionary ā although it never seemed to matter how many curses he claimed to know, he was never someone anyone feared.
He took a step, and then another, and kept going until he stood beside their table. He cleared his throat but it was as if he was invisible. He cleared it again and the closest one to him, the louder of the bunch, glared up at him.
Great, he had their attention⦠Now what? He cleared his throat again, made awkward by their obvious attention to him. āWould⦠Would you want ā ā
āWhich one.ā
Severus blinked at them. āWhat? Oh, err⦠Anyone?ā The look on their faces made his own go red.
āOh? Any of us? Doesnāt matter who?ā The closest one to him said, looking back at her friends with raised eyebrows and a smirk, causing a chorus of laughs. āSo what is it?ā
Severus wanted to turn around and bolt out the door. This had been a mistake. A miscalculation. His friends had lured him into a trap and he jumped right on it. He couldnāt run though; they were still watching most likely. This was about him proving he wasnāt scared.
He swallowed what little of his pride he had left and opened his mouth. āWould anyone want⦠to beā¦ā All he had to do was say it, no matter how humiliating, how embarrassing this was. āMy valentine.ā
Done. He did it, now he could turn around and go back to Zander, head held high. He didnāt really care what any of them thought. He already knew their answer before he even got out of his chair. He turned around as they laughed in his face, ready to face his friends and get back to business.
āWait! Severus!ā one of them called him back.
He stopped. Turned. And stared at the Ravenclaw who had stood up. She waved him back with a shy look on her face and his heart leapt into his mouth. He swallowed it down and walked back, feeling his blood rush into his cheeks.
āSeverus,ā she said, shyly twirling her finger around the mouth of her cup. āI havenāt given you an answer.ā
āYouāre answer?ā He couldnāt help the tremble in his hands now. He started pulling on the loose stitching on his sweater.
She smiled up at him⦠And in the blink of an eye she snatched up her cup and threw its contents in his face. āOf course not, Snivellus!ā
Severus gasped as the cold liquid splashed his face, drenching his sweater. He spit out cherry colored butterbeer and wiped his face with his wet sweater sleeve. He turned away from the laughter, but it circled him. He blinked through red-tinted droplets and scanned the faces of the crowd. Itād be easier to look for someone who wasnāt laughing because every face his gaze landed on was one that made his chest constrict.
He turned to his table, to his friends. They were all doubled over with pure glee, laughing as dignified as they could all while he dripped on the floor, the mock of the inn. He grit his teeth and closed his eyes, unwilling to let any more of this scene get stored in his brain. He stumbled through chairs and stools and pushed his friends aside to get his bag. He pulled it free and threw it over his shoulder. He stumbled some more as the laughter continued and threw his body against the door, throwing it open.
He ran out the door, out of the warmth of the inn and into the cold. The streets were nearly empty as wizards settled into homes or restaurants for lunch. He ran as fast as he could back to the castle, not caring about the sting of the wind as it scraped along his skin. His eyes burned and he felt tears begin to form as the realization of what had just happened began to bubble in the pit of his stomach.
He almost slipped on the bridge and as he reached its crest hands gripped his arms, stopping him on the spot. He blinked tears away and cleared his vision, looking up from the ground, ready to fight whoever had stopped him. He didnāt have to tilt his head up very far, easily staring into the eyes of another student, though he couldnāt immediately tell what house they belonged to.
āYou almost bumped into me,ā she said, releasing her hold on him.
āYou should have cleared my path,ā he spat.
She shrunk back and gripped the edge of her cloak. āWell Iāve been looking for youā¦ā
Severus stared at her. He couldnāt possibly fathom why. Heād never seen her before, never talked to her before, and couldnāt imagine what sheād want from him. āIām here arenāt I?ā
She swallowed and nodded. āI⦠I have something for youā¦ā
āThen hurry up,ā he growled. It was cold and the butterbeer was starting to freeze.
He watched her open her cloak and noticed she wore a light red dress, almost pink. He wanted to hex it and turn it black from how sick of everything Valentine he was. The cloak pulled back further and she pulled out a single pink carnation with a green ribbon tying a note to its stem.
Her cheeks blushed as she held out the flower for him to take and he couldnāt help but stand there motionless, waiting for his brain to think something, say something, act and do anything other than gawk at her.
āWill you be my valentine, Severus?ā she said, as if the flower hadnāt signaled just that.
He noticed his hand moving to take the flower while he remained stupefied, petrified, and perplexed. His heart, shattered and broken as it was, beat with immense longing as he pulled the flower to his chest.
āI⦠who are you?ā He wasnāt sure why he wasnāt asking more important questions like āwhy meā, āis this another prankā, or āare you realā. He could feel the air changing around him as hope seeped into his soul, giving him a breath of new air that seemed to revitalized and mend the most broken parts of himself.
She smiled and stepped closer, making his breath catch in his throat. He could feel a warmth radiating off her, reaching out to him, banging on his walls, begging him to let her in. Her eyes looked up at his and he felt his legs go weak. He wanted to run, to apparate away and corral his thoughts, but he also wanted to stay and stare back into the depths of hers. It was different the way her eyes looked at him. He couldnāt see any hatred or disdain like so many others had in theirs when their gaze ever landed on him.
ā(Y/n),ā she said. āIāve seen you around school and⦠Well Iām ashamed to say Iāve sort of been hiding from you.ā She blushed and looked down at her feet. āSeverus,ā she whispered. āIāve had a crush on you for quite a while.ā She looked up at him then and gave him another one of her gentle smiles.
He accepted her words without another thought and regarded her truthfully, willing to open his heart to her. Her smile melted him, her eyes dazzled him, and, he realized finally with one long look, she was very cute.
āSo, will you?ā she asked again, taking another step closer.
He gripped the flower tighter and it finally hit him. She liked him. She really liked him. Someone had a crush on him and ā Merlin, she was cute. Could he really be so lucky?
He opened his mouth when he realized something. She had broken his barriers and shields and so he hadnāt had the mind to analyze his surroundings. Laughter. He heard laughter coming closer. He turned and cursed the world for allowing anyone else but her and him to remain. It was the group of Ravenclaws making their way to the bridge.
āI ā ā He couldnāt get any other word in before the group had reached the very spot on the bridge they stood in.
The girl closest to them spotted the pink carnation instantly, pointed, and laughed. They elbowed each other, making sure everyone had noticed him and the flower, and stopped next to them.
āSnivellus! Why didnāt you get us any flowers!ā one of them guffawed.
The closest one stepped closer and crossed her arms. ā(Y/n), donāt let him fool you into thinking youāre special. He just came from asking for any one of us to be his valentine. He didnāt even care which one.ā
(Y/n) eyeās filled with tears and she looked up at him, expecting him to deny everything. Severus realized heād never felt true heartbreak until now. He knew now that the shattering heād always felt was nothing compared to the pain now, like stakes were being hammered into his still pumping heart one by one, emptying him completely.
He could lie to her. He could deny it all. But that warmth heād felt radiating off of her⦠thatās what heād imagined safety to feel like. If he could only step closer and feel it once more. If he lied, heād be bringing thorns and barbs into something so precious and delicate.
He took a step closer to her and lowered his head, ready to feel her pull away that warmth she offered him. āI can explain it. Please listen ā ā
She jerked back from him and the cold of winter swooped in to fill the air where the heat had disappeared.

The air was cold and dry, sapping the warmth from your hands that had, moment ago, been as hot as coals from the pure adrenaline that had coursed through your veins. The amount of courage it had taken to finally admit your feelings to Severus had taken you days to carefully collect. You had spent hours pushing away your fears, and now something much worse than rejection was taking place.
Your truest crush had asked out another girl, or many other girls, and your foolishness had landed you at the bottom of his list. Was what they were saying true? You didnāt want to believe it but⦠he didnāt deny it, no matter how much you begged him to with your eyes.
You closed them shut and sniffed. When you opened them again you marched right through the group of Ravenclaws, right passed Severus, and headed down the road to Hogsmeade. What a fool you were, charming your old dress into one you hoped would turn you into Severusā dream. All those breaks spent following him around, hiding behind pillars and admiring him from afar, watching how he always pushed his long black hair behind his ear when he got ready to read⦠Or the way he bit his lip when he paused to think before jotting things down in his journal. Youād even swooned at the way he walked, like a sulking cat trotting from one shadow to the next hoping to remain unseen. You had seen him. You had seen him and loved what you saw.
When you reached the low lamp post right before town you turned and wished you hadnāt. Severus was watching you, with his dark glimmering eyes that very rarely ever looked up from the ground. He never gave anyone his attention, but he was giving it to you now. His large nose was almost pink and nearly-invisible lines trailed down his cheek. He stood there, tall as he was despite always slumping his shoulders, holding your flower to his chest.
You sighed heavily and turned, starting back on your way down Hogsmeadeās cobbled road.

There she went with his heart in her pocket. Was it possible? Could someone so suddenly appear in his life, shake his world upside down, and then walk away like she hadnāt just changed him forever? Love; now whenever that word would be spoken, heād only think of her. Kindness; only her face would remind him of the definition. Safety, hope, happiness, dreams; her eyes, her smile, the softness of her curves, the allure of her scent, the wonder of what her hugs could have felt like, and that warmth that had melted away his armor. All his life⦠heād never felt that warmth. Not from his mother, not from his friends, and not even from ā
He winced as the numbness gave way to a heavy emptiness that hollowed him out. He began walking back to Hogwarts as if nothing had ever happened, except heād acquired a single pink carnation. With every step he heard voices, familiar and sharp, that stabbed him with words heād heard a million times before. He knew he was hated, despised, and unworthy of good things. He had just hoped, fueled by the encouraging gentleness of her eyes and welcoming smile, that he could finally be wanted.
~ * ~ * ~
Severus stepped into the common room and pulled on the strap of his bag, hearing several patches groan with protest as the seams threatened to come undone. He headed to the boyās dormitory and slouched on the wall, unsure if he could make it another step without collapsing. He felt crushed, pulverized, like his life energy had been spent and he was finally coming to an end.
A door opened in the distance and he straightened, staring at the stone floor as his housemate walked by, ignoring him like a ghost in the corridors. He let out a sigh and dragged his feet forward until he reached his room. It was empty, save for a spoiled grey cat which slept on a bed.
He dumped all his things on his bed. He wanted to close his eyes and sleep until he could no longer remember how beautiful her name had sounded coming from her lips. He held out the carnation and rolled its stem between his fingers. ā(Y/n).ā
He set the flower down on top of his things and pulled his sweater over his head. He threw it into his trunk and toed off his shoes, settling into the bed. If he slept heād be forced to replay the events of today in some horrible nightmare. He pushed things aside ā keeping the flower close ā and took out his charms journal.
He could work on the information charm and show Zander and the others how capable he was. Maybe then they wouldnāt try to humiliate him. Theyād finally accept him. He pulled out his journal and reviewed his notes. All an information charm really was is an incredibly invasive bonding spell. A spell that tied two things together and forced an object to display information about the other. The telling clocks told its owners where certain people where, and the talking chips merely displayed what their partner chips spelled. As long as he kept it small, it would be easy.
For the next few hours he worked on his spell, thinking about nothing more than the charm itself. He sat on his bed, legs crossed, bent over his journal and books as he crossed things out and rewrote spell after spell. It wasnāt working. Everything he tried was too complicated. He could barely get information out of and of the objects he tried. His quills were too old to withstand the bonding spells, his journals gave too much information. He sat back into his pillows and sighed.
He needed something with more purity, something which he knew he didnāt own. He looked around the room, searching for some sort of unused object, some material that could withstand the spell to even initiate the charm⦠His eyes landed on the carnation heād moved to his night stand.
Would he have been enjoying a romantic date right about now? Would she have tried to hold his hand? He would have been too nervous to do it himself but⦠He held up his hand and looked at it. What did it feel like to hold her hand? It would have been smaller than his, warm, and soft. He would have held on forever and never let go. What was she like? Would they have been perfect for each other? He thought of her smile and of her lips, supple and eager as she spokeā¦
He sat up fast as flashes of kissing her filled his head. No, he couldnāt endure this torture. He scrambled for new material and growled when nothing he owned fit what he looked for. He got out of bed and looked around, eyes glancing everywhere but the flower. He got on his knees and searched under beds until he found something gleaming and silver flashing back at him.
He rolled up his sleeve and stretched his arm under his dormmateās bed as far as it would go. His hands found the cold metal and closed around it, pulling it back to him. It was a small necklace with silver metal beads that encased delicate diamonds. He remembered how it got there, thrown aside for not being flashy enough, or expensive enough for his crush.
He held it in his hands and sat back on his heels. It had a round charm, flat as if calling out to him. The surface would be a perfect spot to display something small⦠a single word⦠a name perhaps. He ran his tongue over his teeth and felt he was on the verge of something great. All it would take was a single spark of an idea and he could create something grand and ā as Flitwick seemed to think ā impossible for any Hogwarts student to pull off.
He groaned as he stood and made his way back to his own bed. He set the necklace on his knee, and on his other began to write. It took precious more hours of writing, scratching out, and re-writing until the spell was as condensed as possible; long spells never worked well, the shorter the phrase the better.
Now that he had the bonding spell perfected⦠what could he use? He stared at the necklace and knew the answer. He sighed and took the necklace in his hand again and began the spell. It was quick to read, and as he moved his wand over the silver metal the air began to shimmer. His lips moved carefully as he focused his intent and finally, at the last word he pointed his wand at himself.
He felt a slight breeze brush his skin and shivered. It was done. He and the necklace were bonded with him as the information giver and it, or more precisely the flat round charm, as the information receiver. He thumbed over the metal and squinted⦠but no word showed up. The spell was to force the metal to engrave the name of his crush⦠but her name did not display.
Maybe he got it wrong. He looked through his notes, flipping only the last two pages where he had condensed the spell, and frowned. It is as it should be, unless his logic was somehow flawed⦠but no, it rarely was. If there was one thing he could count on, anything or anyone in the whole world, it would be himself and his ability to reason correctly.
He stared at the charm again. It could be⦠He furrowed his brows and pinched his nose⦠It could be that he didnāt have a crush on her? Not a true one⦠not like heād know what that really felt like. But he did like her, very much. He opened his eyes and fell back into his pillows, defeated. What was this even for? Would he really show this to Zander? Was he so foolish to believe Zander would look at her name engraved into this necklace and be impressed with him? No. He wasnāt.
So then⦠He sat up and looked at the flower once more, as if begging it to give him answers. Was he doing this for her? Did he really think he could fix what heād done? Right the misunderstanding and win her heart? āI want toā¦ā Then what must he do?
He pushed out of bed once more and dug in his trunk for a new sweater, pulling it over his head. Heād go down to Hogsmeade and find her, tell her the truth of what happened and then⦠then heād kiss her. He swallowed and slowed down. Could he kiss her? ā¦If heād been brave enough to ask out a group of girlās heād never met before knowing full well what rejection awaited him, then he could ask out the kind and gentle girl who had offered him her heart so willingly.
He slipped into his shoes and headed out the door, out of the boyās dormitory, out of the common room and ran up the dungeon stairs. He needed to find her fast before Hogsmeade hours came to an end. He ran through the castle and shoved open the doors, plunging head first into the cold February air. He sped down the slippery grass of the sloping lawn and nearly tripped out the gates. He caught his footing and continued down the trail, huffing and puffing at the exercise and hating the metallic taste in his throat and mouth.
He grimaced as he crossed the bridge and headed right into town. He checked the Three Broomsticks, she wasnāt there. He checked shop after shop, in alleys, behind houses, and even the lakeās edge and under every tree. She was not eating, shopping, wandering, or sitting anywhere in Hogsmeade. āWhere is she?ā he growled. Of course this is happening, he knew better than to believe luck was on his side. He walked back down the street slowly, and saw the door to Madam Pudifootās teashop open. A couple left, laughing and holding each other by the waists.
Severus swallowed. Was she in there with someone else? After she had realized her mistake in liking him, had she given her heart to someone else, refusing to let this day be a waste? He shook his head and looked away. He couldnāt give up hope, not this time, not with something so rare to ever happen to him. He had to believe the best of her, this (Y/n), who had so bravely confronted him and admitted to her long-standing crush on him. He knew very little about her, but he couldnāt imagine sheād give her heart out so flimsily.
He started his way back to Hogwarts, keeping at a slow and somber gait, and made it back to the castle just in time for dinner. He was too late. Valentineās day was practically over. He filtered in with other students and took his seat at the Slytherin table. Zander was there, with a spot open next to him but Severus couldnāt take it. He had nothing to show him and after today⦠he didnāt know how he could show his face around him. Severus took a seat at the back of the table with some lower years and ate in silence, his hand in his pocket, thumbing over the cold metal of the necklace.

~ * ~ * ~
You tried keeping your eyes on your friends, on the food, on your plate as you ate, but your gaze kept lifting to the back of the Slytherin table where a gloomy boy with inky hair sat bent over his food, barely touching it. Severus looked sad, sadder than most days. His nose was pink still and his cheeks red. Had he been outside again? In Hogsmeade⦠maybe⦠maybe looking for you? You shook your head. Of course not.
All through dinner you watched him eat alone and away from his friends. Had something happened? When you met him at the bridge he looked a mess with his soaked sweater and hair plastered to his head. And that group of girl, who so readily laughed at him⦠Maybe⦠maybe he did have an explanation for what had happened.
Your heart began to beat again, slow at first, and then faster and faster as if hope had filled your soul once more and given you life. You wanted Severus so badly, so badly it hurt and, could you really have him? Was it possible to have the boy of your dreams? If you listened to his explanation would he fix everything and give you his heart in return?
You bit your lip and looked up at Severus once more. You wanted him so bad⦠It was a chance you needed to take.

As dinner came to an end, students filtered out of the great hall and into the entrance hall, making their way to their houses. Severus walked among them, defeated and empty. His arms swayed limply by his sides and his head hung low, eyes glued to the ground in front of him. He turned the corner and kept to the shadows of the walls. He didnāt want to be spotted or looked at or found by anyone. There wasnāt a single person in this prison he wanted to see, none except for (Y/n).
He dragged his feet as he made his way through the corridor and nearly yelped when two hands pulled him deeper into the shadows. He stumbled backwards and heard a door slam shut. It was dark and the thud echoed off the walls. He squinted and saw nothing. He fumbled for his wand ā he always kept it on him, ready for anything ā but someone pinned him to the wall.
āLumos,ā a familiar voice whispered.
Severus stared into the glittering depths of warm, kind eyes. ā(Y/n),ā he breathed.
Her face was pensive as she stood there, looking him over. She was unsure of him.
Before she could say another word he shoved his hand in his pocket and pulled out the necklace. āI-I made this for you⦠er, well the charm doesnāt workā¦ā
She took the necklace he held out to her and looked at it carefully. āWhatās it supposed to do?ā
He heaved a quick sigh and looked away. āTāsupposed to display your name⦠er ā display the name of my crush.ā
She regarded the necklace and gave a breathy chuckle. āOf courseā¦ā
Severus frowned. āOf course what?ā
āOf course it doesnāt work. You donāt like anyone!ā She laughed and stepped back, the wandlight illuminating more of the empty classroom sheād dragged him into. āYou didnāt ask out a specific girl, you asked out that whole group. You didnāt care who it was, so long as someone accepted to being your valentine. And Iāmā¦ā She closed her eyes and sniffed. āIām just someone who has a crush on you. Thatās all you care about.ā
Severus blinked at her for several long seconds. ā(Y/n)⦠I⦠I want to like you.ā
She scoffed.
āNo! I mean ā I ā You ā No one has ever liked me and ā ā
She shook her head and reached for the door. Severus jumped in her way, desperate to continue talking, to clear everything up. He liked her, he did. She was nice and warm and everything about her made his knees weak and heart pound like crazy in his rib cage. She was pretty, far too pretty for him, and her voice was soothing, and she was perfect, he just knew it.
āPlease let me explain what happened,ā he begged her.
She stepped closer and placed her hand on the doorknob stubbornly. āI donāt need an explanation.ā
She was so close to him, he could smell her hair, smell the piney scent of Hogsmeade blown into her clothes, infused by the wind. He pressed himself to the door and looked down at her. āPlease.ā
The look on her face told him she was done. She was done with him and she was done talking. He couldnāt keep her trapped in this room no more than he could make her listen. And yet, he still kept on the door, not letting her pull it open. She huffed and before he could think, she gripped his sweater and pulled him away from it forcefully, shoving him back into the classroom where he tripped and fell onto a seat.
He looked into her eyes. She was fierce. Not the gentle, delicate girl she first appeared to be. There was stubbornness and power to her being. No one could control her if she did not wish it, and the only reason she still stood before him was out of that same kindness that radiated out of her.
āIām really sorry to have done that, Severus. You donāt deserve to be pushed around like that⦠but I want to leave⦠and I will.ā She turned around and stepped out of the room, letting the door close behind her.
His heart beat harder than ever before. The way she shoved him, with a calculated caution that told him even when heād gone too far, when heād pushed her beyond her patience, she still cared for his wellbeing. She was kind, warm, strong willed, fierce, beautiful, and courageous. The more he learned the more he wanted to her to like himā¦
He sat there and stared at the wall. Sheād been so close he could smell her. Sheād grabbed his sweater and for an instant heād thought ā heād hoped sheād kiss him. Merlin, he wanted to kiss her now. To press this fierce girl into him and kiss her long into the night. He didnāt know how to kiss, and imagined heād be horrible, but every inch of his body told him he was craving her with an intensity he hadnāt ever felt.
He wanted her, and he wanted her to like him. Needed her to like him again. His hands found the ruffled part of his sweater where her hands had gripped it, and he closed his eyes, imagining her hands still there.
He heard the door and his eyes flew open. Someone stepped in and closed it.
āLumos.ā
A wandlight shined and he could see (Y/n) standing there, looking at the necklace in her hands. He held his breath, waiting for her to speak.
She looked up at him and turned to necklace so he could see, although he was still too far and the engraving would have been too small. āIt says my nameā¦ā She stepped closer. āIf this is a trick ā ā
Severus shook his head and sat up. āItās not a trick.ā
She stared deeply into his eyes. āPlease explain.ā
He nodded quickly and licked his lips. āErvingwell and his friends ā they had me ask out those Ravenclaws to prove I wasnāt too scared to make an information charm⦠I donāt know why I did it. I thought, knowing theyād all say no, it would be an easy way to prove to Zander I wasnāt as pitiful as he thought I was.ā He lowered his head.
There was a long silence, one that made him feel worse than he ever had. He really was pitiful.
āMay I touch you?ā
Severus jumped. He looked up into her eyes and nodded. āYou can do anything youād like.ā His own words made him blush but it was true. She giggled and his heart felt lighter by the sound. Her hand brushed back his hair and he closed his eyes, focusing on the feel of her finger on his temple. āIām sorry I hurt you. I would never mean to.ā
Her fingers pulled back. āYouāre saying everything I want to hear⦠It almost seems too good to be true.ā
He stood up and slowly reached for her hand, giving her enough time to pull away, but she didnāt. His fingers hovered close to hers. āM-may I?ā She nodded and he took her hand, soft and small in his. āI want to be yours, if you still want me.ā
She wrapped her fingers in his and looked up at him. āDo you want me?ā
āMore than anything.ā He couldnāt help but glance down at her lips. Did he want her? His whole heart, mind, and body screamed at him āYes!ā
He wanted her in so many ways. He wanted to know her, to have her friendship, to feel her caring ways, to feel her. He wanted her touch.
āI want you, Severus,ā she whispered.

~ * ~ * ~
You breathed in the feint scent of ink and page. He was so close. His face lingered just above your and his eyes, those deep wells of pure darkness that looked your face over with lust that could not be hidden. You could tell he wanted you, and despite knowing he wanted your touch and, perhaps, to touch you as well, his eyes glanced up into yours with intensity; like he couldnāt keep himself from acknowledging your very being. You no longer felt like just a girl who had a crush on him⦠You felt important to him.
āI need you,ā he whimpered.
Without thinking you got on your toes and kissed him hard. He didnāt need any more encouragement than that. His hands quickly found your waist and he pulled you into him with a wild neediness that made you melt in his arms.
His arms snaked around you and pulled you closer into his body. He was warm and your own hands wrapped around his neck, playing with his hair, pulling it as you pleased. He moaned and stepped back suddenly, and you almost gasped as you felt him falling back.
You opened your eyes but his hands gripped your waist and pulled you onto his lap. He sat in a chair and waited for your arms to find themselves around his neck once more. You leaned in and pressed your lips to his, tasting him, biting his lip, moving your head with his. His hands pulled you closer to him and he whimpered once more.
āIāll be anything you want me to be. Iāll do anything to make you happy. Iāll ā ā
You pressed your finger to his lips, quieting him. āSeverus⦠I just want you to be you.ā His eyes trailed down and he looked away. āI like you the way you are⦠You donāt have to prove yourself to me or do anything to make me like you⦠Just be⦠Mine. Just be my valentine.ā
You brushed a tear out of the corner of his eye and pulled his chin up, meeting his eyes. He nodded and pulled you closer, pressing his face into your chest and sobbed. You held him close, rubbing your hands over his shoulders and back in slow gentle circles.
He pulled his face back to look at yours, as if checking to see he wasnāt ruining anything by displaying his feelings so openly. You bit your lip and smiled. Even with delicate tears trailing down his cheeks, he looked cute and dreamy, as he always did.
āI really like you.ā You kissed his forehead, his nose, his cheeks, and finally, his lips.
He moaned and closed his arms around you again. āWill you be my valentine?ā
āNothing would make me happier.ā You smiled and kissed him once more, feeling him draw you in closer.
āIāll be your valentine, (Y/n). Yours and only yours. Forever.ā

āAre you ready?ā your partner, Severus Snape, Mr. Irritable himself, snapped in your direction.
Why would Professor Kettleburn pair him with you? You were his best student in all the year, how could he do this? You always raised your hand, always answered his questions, always volunteered, and how did he reward you? By forcing you to work with someone who definitely didnāt want to work with you on a care of magical creatures assignment that involved long hours of working together!
You scratched your head and looked again in the cage you had brought with you. There were definitely only three guinea pigs here, and Lyla was the one missing. āUm, Severus?ā
Severus turned his scrutinizing gaze your way. Among the large leafs and tall foliage of the greenhouse, he looked very much like a poisonous plant, dressed in nearly all black. He held his books tighter in his hands and frowned. āWhat.ā
āOne of my guinea pigs is missing, we canāt leave the greenhouse yet.ā
He shut his eyes, very annoyed, and pinched the bridge of his nose. āLook, getting the sand otter to even poke his head out will take hours, let alone getting him to change colors.ā He looked back up at you and down at the cage. āWe only need one.ā
You gasped and heard identical squeaking from the cage that you were sure were little gasps of shock. You shook your head. āNo. Weāre not leaving Lyla. And what happens if we open the door and she runs out?ā
He let out a frustrated growl. āYou should have taken better care of your animals! Or better yet, you should have only brought ONE!ā He marched up to the table and picked up the seeds you both had collected from several plants to feed the otter in the hopes of luring him out. āIām going to get started, and if at any moment youād like to help me complete our task, please donāt hesitate to join.ā
He stormed back to the door and you held out your hand. āWait!ā He glared at you, making you wince. He had a point, somewhat. You needed to get started and⦠besides, Lyla hates not being around her friends. Maybe if she thought she was alone, sheād reveal her hiding place. āOk, your right.ā
A single dark eyebrow raised on his face.
You sighed. āYou get started and take the other three. Iāll stay here a few minutes just to look around one last time.ā
Severus rolled his eyes but released the knob of the door. āFine,ā he grumbled. He walked back, pulled his sleeves up, and picked up the cage. āBut if I get the otter to show himself and change colors, I wonāt be putting your name on the report.ā
You nodded and watched him awkwardly take the large cage to the door and struggle with the doorknob. His long arms wrapped around the cage clumsily as he balanced his books on top, where the cageās handle was. You refrained from laughing as he toed the door open and squeezed his way through. His fuming and hostile exterior while carrying a cage full of adorable little creatures really made his struggle an amusing sight to behold.
The door shut and you watched through the dirt stained greenhouse windows as he waddled towards one of the inflatable kiddie pools filled with sand. He set down the cage carefully and sat on the grass with crossed legs. You turned your attention to the greenhouse floor and began searching for your adventuring little girl.
āLyla, your missing out,ā you teased. You looked back out and saw Severus opening the cage door and placing June on the sand. āTheyāre all having fun out there, meeting new people, playing in warm sandā¦ā You heard a rustle and followed the sound to a little fern on the ground where two little eyes looked up at you. āHello there, little Miss. Would you like me to bring you back to your friends?ā
She hopped down from the pot and ran to your shoes, squeaking excitedly. You picked her up and smiled. āNothing keeps you from a new adventure, isnāt that right?ā She squeaked happily in your hands as you kissed her little head and headed out of the greenhouse. āNow letās ā ā
You stopped on the grass, eyes wide, as you took in the situation. The sand otter, golden yellow with little freckles of pinks, browns, and oranges, sat on its haunches enjoying the sight of Severus Displeased-With-Everyone Snape struggled to contain his laughter while three little furry bodies climbed all over his robes. Luie was licking Severusā neck, dodging his hands to his other shoulder to wiggle his whiskers on his cheek. Bow was running in and out of Severusā pant legs, avoiding being shaken off by climbing up into his shirt. And June was holding strands of coal-black hair in his attempt to stay sprawled on top of Severusā head.
Finally, unable to hold it in anymore, Severus barked out a laugh that unleashed a flurry of giggles. He was down on the ground now, struggling to contain the three traitorous guinea pigs from running all over him with soft little paws.
In your hands, Lyla struggled to get free and you put her down, running alongside her on the grass. You stopped before Severus and kneeled next to him. āDo you need any help?ā You tried holding back your own giggles but gave in as Lyla started licking his nose.
āPlease!ā he laughed.
You took each one off him and placed them in the sand to play with the otter. He breathed in and huffed out air as he laid on the grass still, trying to catch his breath. You were still smiling down at him. You hadnāt ever thought it possible that Severus could have such a fun side to him. Sure, he very much had tried to stop the storm of tickles, but he didnāt seem very mad. In fact, he looked positively happy. He looked up at you and blushed, and for several seconds you held his gaze with a grin of your own. It was nice to sit in the grass, forget about school, and just enjoy the day.
Voices sounded from a distance, and as if remembering where he was, Severus quickly sat up and fixed his face sternly. āWe did it,ā he said, picking up his books. āIāll write up the report tonight and put your name on it.ā He picked up June, Bow, Luie, and Lyla and placed them in their cage.
You nodded. Seeing the sudden difference between Severusā happy self and his serious self made your head swirl. If only that moment had lasted a bit longer. If only you could have looked down at his smile and glowing eyes longer, sharing in the joyfulness of life. You would never look at him the same again knowing this other side of him existed.
He stood just as other students made their ways to the other little sand pools. You stood as well, brushing grass off your skirt, and picked up the cage by the handle since you didnāt have long arms like him. Together, in awkward silence, you headed back to the castle.
When you reached the steps he stopped to face you but avoided your eyes. There was a light blush still present on his cheeks. āPlease donāt tell anyone,ā he whispered.
You nodded, knowing how precarious his situation was. He already got picked on, and if you told anyone that there was a softer side to him theyād surely take it as weakness and try to exploit it for their own amusement. āI promise I wonāt,ā you reassured him.
He nodded but before he could take another step you caught his wrist. He turned and his mouth opened a small bit from shock by the strange intimacy that was quickly forming between you. You twisted the cage to your back side and took a step closer.
āI really liked seeing that side of you, Severus⦠and⦠Iād like to get to know all sides of you.ā
His mouth still hung open but his face was slowly turning bright pink again. You smiled at him and stood on your toes, placing your hand on his shoulder for support, and gave him a peck on the cheek. You pulled back and giggled at his obvious delight by your kiss.
He shut his mouth and grinned from ear to ear. His eyes scanned your surroundings and after making sure there was no one nearby, he gave your cheek a quick kiss in return. āDo you⦠want to sit with me while I write our report?ā
āIād love to.ā
He took the cage in his arms again and the guinea pigs squeaked with delight, rushing to the cage bars to lick Severusā fingers lovingly. He bit his lip quickly, stifling a giggle and looked your way shyly. Unable to stop yourself, you kissed his cheek on last time before calming your little babies with promises that Severus would play with them again soon.
