Specs Released : 1 March 2016 Chronology : âOld Friendsâ 19 Jan 2016 â âEngine For Gabrielâ â âLanguage of Loveâ 15 March 2016 Genre : Afro-Pop Length : 03:47 Music : BĂ„rd YlvisĂ„ker/Vegard YlvisĂ„ker /Lars Devik Lyrics : BĂ„rd YlvisĂ„ker/Vegard YlvisĂ„ker/Christian LĂžchstĂžer/Lars Devik Producer : Lars Devik Director : Ole Martin Hafsmo Background The project was sparked when Vegard came across Gabriel Nderituâs story while he was browsing aviation videos on Youtube. Gabriel, an IT specialist from the suburb of Kahawa West in Kenya, has built 14 planes in his backyard. He tests them on Kitengela Plain, but so far none have flown successfully. His planes are called âUpendoâ which is âloveâ in Swahili. Ylvis was intrigued by his story and as they were having BjĂžrn Kjos (aviator and CEO of Norwegian Air Shuttle, born and raised in Ringerike, Norway) as a guest on their show, âI Kveld Med Ylvisâ, they thought that they should show him clips of Gabrielâs attempts and ask his advice on what Gabriel needs to do to succeed. His answer was that Gabriel needed a bigger engine, with at least 100 horsepower, like a Rotax 914. After their interview with BjĂžrn Kjos, people contacted them to encourage Gabriel and ask how they can help him and so the #EngineForGabriel project was born. Ylvis decided to make a music video to raise money to get an engine for Gabriel and BjĂžrn Kjos said they are welcome to use one of his airlineâs hangars as a shooting location. He also stars in the music video. A website was created, www.engineforgabriel.com, where people could donate money. They also asked people to make a short video to encourage Gabriel while holding a sign with the hashtag #ENGINEFORGABRIEL in a cool location. These videos would then be used in the music video, as well as a clip recorded with their audience of their talkshow in the Oslo Folketeateret. The project started at the beginning of February 2016, the music video was released on 1 March (on a season 5 episode of their talkshow) and by mid March enough money had been raised to get an engine and TV Norge had agreed to sponsor a pilotâs licence for Gabriel. Ylvis broke the news to Gabriel in a Skype interview. He was due to start his pilotâs licence training on 4 July 2016 at the Ninety Nines Flying School, Wilson Airport, Nairobi, Kenya.
