A Stranger Things story

Hey all! Writing this fic has been kinda slow bc of my college work. However, i wanted to give a preview of chapter 1 and how things are going, so here ya go! This is only the opening bit of it, but enjoy!

The days seemed to go by faster and faster somehow. That was, oddly, the scariest thing of all to Mike. 

589 days had passed since their town had collapsed. The seasons had come and gone and yet their remained a giant gap in the earth. A literal and figurative gap. The day that Max had died and been resurrected, triggering the final phase of Vecna's plan had been the end of Mike's hope. As he had stood on the hill with his friends and sister by his side, watching the crumbling earth glow with red lights and the sound of screeching creatures, the sky grumbling with lightning and dark clouds, he finally realized how naive they had been. Despite all they had done and been through, it was the first time that he really grappled with the reality that he was going to die.

As the ground shook under him, his breathing and head becoming heavy, he realized that this was going to be a long shot. He would do what he could, he guessed. But he knew deep down that nothing mattered more to him than keeping his friends safe. He knew deep down that it was such a small chance of all of them surviving this. If one of them had to go, it might as well be him. The Heart of the Party, or so he was led to believe. Will had convinced him, encouraged him, to be that for El in that last battle and yet, she lost. He really thought they had it. That she had it. His determination and belief in her and his love for her had worked in the past, almost like a Disney movie. Love prevails over all, right? El was powerful and strong. He really believed that. So why? 

Why wasn't it enough?

Was he really the Heart when he had to be encouraged and coaxed into believing that he alone could help her? Was he really the Heart when he couldn't even be strong enough for his girlfriend? His extraordinary, superpowered girlfriend? He let her down, didn't he? She is incredible and was doing everything and he couldn't do this one thing for her. He can't be the Heart of the Party and fail. She believed he was the Heart and he proved that she was wrong. She wasted her time with him, wasted her time having Will create this beautiful piece of art just for him to mess it all up. 

           Now, these 589 days later, this sentiment was just as true. As their lives are invaded by hopelessness and regret, he was stupidly hanging onto these words that didn’t even come from El’s mouth. The words that made him feel so.. worthy. 

          So why wasn’t it enough to make her look him in the eye?
