It was bad enough just being there at the funeral. At her funeral. She would’ve been alive if it wasn’t for him, if only he’d been fast enough, strong enough, then maybe she’d still be breathing. Even now, just saying her name was like pouring salt in the wound. Stepping up to the podium? Being amputated awake would’ve been less p a i n f u l.

“ I-uh, ” He took a second, glancing around for a comforting face, only to quickly realize the one he was looking for was in the casket behind him. Clearing his throat, he continued. “ Max, was a lot of things. Kind, genuine, ready to smack anyone upside the head who had deserved it; but more importantly, she was loved… she loved others in return…. Even the most broken people, the ones everyone else had cast aside. I was beyond blessed to have such a woman in my life.

   –Max Sebastian was a great friend,                               an amazing lover,         and there is no doubt she would have been an outstanding mother…”

It was now that Scott brought himself to glance back at the woman in the casket, a deep look of regret in his eyes.
