There’s a new show on paramount+ called Happy Face that totally wants some of prodigal son’s nachos
it's definitely a very similar premise (about the daughter of a serial killer) but to be fair it's based on a real life serial killer and his real life daughter who wrote a book about it: the "happy face killer" aka keith hunter jesperson and his daughter melissa moore.
honestly prodigal son probably took some inspiration from that case- I know tom at the very least mentioned he listened to melissa's podcast about her father and his murders and how it impacted her and her family to prepare to play malcolm. and I'm guessing chris and sam had heard of it since it seems to be one of the only somewhat well known story of a serial killer who had a child that now discusses it publicly.
anyway sorry if you already knew all this lol I was actually thinking I'd post about the plot it since it's a really similar story so it's cool you brought it up. but yeah I might have to check it out...if any of you guys end up watching it lmk what you think!

Okay so for everyone wondering about happy face, I watched the first two episodes and so far the tone is rather consistently serious. It’s not a procedural so it’s a rather contained, heavy story so far. Not very comedic, like prodigal son, so if you’re hoping for a 1:1 replacement? This is not it. I do suggest giving it a shot, but don’t expect the same tone or approach. It’s very much about this one woman, her father and her family so far and rather serious consistently tonally, though it’s expected.
thank you for the info! yeah that was vibe I got based on the ads and the summary. and it makes sense considering it's based on a real serial killer and his daughter. I'm also not sure if it's supposed to be a mini series or not? all I saw on wikipedia is season one will have 8 total episodes but I'm not sure if they are going to keep it all self contained or if the writers want to continue it to a hypothetical season two. which could also impact how they write it.
