Love Bomb #59 This is my pal Schnelle Schnecke, which is a bad name for a snail, as it means “fast snail” in German, but I call all snails “Schnelle Schnecke” and all lizards “Lizzy,” and all snakes “Snakey.” So see? I’m not as creative as everyone thinks. Anyway, I won’t share the video I took of our dramatic rescue bc it would only serve to embarrass me, as I knelt down on the sidewalk while wearing my almost 30lb pack, before sunrise, talking to Schnelle Schnecke, explaining that if we didn’t speed up his sidewalk transit, he would soon be a flat snail, and no one wants to be a flat snail. So I put down a walking pole, and I SWEAR ON MY MOTHER’S GRAVE that Schnelle Schnecke looked up at me with those big beautiful eyes on the ends of tentacles, checked me out, decided to trust me, climbed onto the end of the stick of his own volition (this was not a very schnell process, I might add), and then retracted into his calcified house for the journey. Such trust! Next was the part of the video that would be the most embarrassing if it ever got out bc I sound like a hard-core Olympian dude dead lifting a million pounds - you know that sound that comes out of them from the core of their beings? That vibration was heard by my phone and Schnelle Schnecke on the sidewalk this morning around 6:30am. I relocated my new buddy under a flowering bush with a big ol’ rubber tree trunk next to it, safe from birds and other schnecke snackers. And then I sang him (maybe a her but I feel like it was a dude snail) my “this is your new place” song that I wrote back in 2009 for relocating the brown recluse spiders that made it into our Rocky mark cabin, hitchhiking on pieces of aspen for the wood stove. Anyway, Schnelle Schnecke, I think you are awesome, and I’m glad we crossed paths today, and thank you for trusting me.
