She sits atop the tallest tower in the city, atop the largest fortress, full of palace guards and scheming politicians. Visible from wherever you stand, by some mad design of refracting lights and mirrors.

Every citizen is under her watch at all times. A panopticon to keep you safe, and accountable.

Few dare to match her gaze, carefully avoiding the blaring light. Kids have made a game of it ; who can stare into the Oracle's Eye for the longest? If you stare too long, they say, you'll be burned up.

The longest record was held by 14 year old Amanda Grey, a bold minute and twelve seconds.

She looks back at them, with particular attention and affection. Children laughing in the streets like ants scurrying about a maze, playing and daring, teasing and fighting.

'Who will they become?', she wonders. 'Who will grow old, and who will incur the panopticon's judgement?'
