Yardenit is the place many pilgrims came to be baptised in the River Jordan, following the Lord’s example. Then, in 1996 Bethany Beyond the Jordan was uncovered where Jesus was baptised and so believers can visit both places in Israel.

It was the final stop of the day’s overwhelming itinerary. We had just visited the Basilica of the Annunciation, Mount of Transfiguration, Church of the Beatitudes, Sea of Galilee, House of St. Peter, and the White Synagogue. Now we were at the Israeli side of the Jordan River, where Jesus was baptized. Qasr el Yahud, in the wilderness of the Jordan River Valley, is identified as the traditional site of Jesus’s baptism. It was closed, however, in 1967 due to unstable political situation in the region, and the Yardenit site was opened to accommodate pilgrims from all over the world. I don’t know. If I had brought a spare set of clothes, I might have considered renewing my baptismal vows.
