So as we all know, I love drow (I would not be here otherwise). But as a black person I also have very complicated feelings towards them. Y’know you think about them for too long and you’re like huh it is kinda weird that this historically evil race also has super dark skin. And I know they’re fantasy black but like it’s still very weird. Of course drow have a number of other controversies but this particular one was on my mind today. This is of course not to say that I hate drow and their lore and never want more of it. I think it’s very neat, but it’s also important to think about the fact that for a very long time drow could only be evil. We mustn’t shy away from the bad aspects of drow.
I’m just glad that they’re moving away from drow only being evil. Although I am still kinda irked by the fact that Drizzt is still like ultra special boy good drow, I love him. I just want more good drow. This is also why I absolutely love Eilistraee and stories of drow being good and going to the surface and all that jazz. Like it just feels very important to me. I’ve come to appreciate evil drow stories too because they’re often complex but I just appreciate the good drow more. Again, wish we had more stories in that vein. Wish we had more drow content overall. I know WOTC is going to move away from drow and their evilness because of it being problematic but I don’t think that really is the answer. I think drow being evil can be handled in a way that isn’t awful (ie. don’t make them like “born” evil, like seriously wtf). I think they can still come up with plenty of drow stuff and have them have their evil society but it just needs some better explaining, which I think they did explain a while ago but I may be misremembering.
Anyways this is all complicated for me personally as someone who yearns for drow content but is disturbed by drow past. I’m rambling, I’m gonna end it here cause I don’t even know if I’m making sense anymore lol.
