I have gotten OBSESSED with your selkie AU over this last week augh I need to see more PLEASEEEE on my knees ready to offer a blood sacrifice if I got to (but also take your time don’t burn yourself out or anything!!)
Blowin ya chaste kisses. With the socks on, of course, to eradicate any homoerotic implications from this friendly homosociality between two strapping individuals.
Jesting aside, I am actually glad that some folks see something in my relatively un-serious AU. I have always been a sucker for the sea and its associations with vast isolationism, and if a man sees a good opportunity to ironically flip a cliche (Selkie AU), he gotta go for it. The Selkie is typically a romantic tragedy or romantic abduction, interchangeably, with the relationship being focal point of the story. O woe, Romeo and Fishliet. Shall the Fishliet abandon everything they knew for a creature of the land? For loveeeee?
It's good. It's classic. It's melodrama. But throughout all this, I found one prospect about Selkies painfully underutilized. Ferality. Wilderness. The Selkie is oftentimes just a fella with a fancy coat: Perfect speech and impressive ability to adjust living on an environment not meant for it. Perfectly harmless, almost idolizingly innocent. It's weaved in it's archetype: A mirage of a beautiful, naive, wedlocked bride.
But remember, folks, real seals are wild animals. Wild carnivorous animals.
So, while the role reversal is the primary idea (Selkie becomes the chaser), Dirk's wild behaviour is a very prominent thing I want to illustrate. Something clearly inhuman in the flesh of one. Literally (38 teeth, scarred, with different internal composition) and personally (An asocial, violent creature who's odd even in seal culture). Savage isn't the word, but benign is definitely not it either. He's entirely apathetic to humans as he is to the sea life: It's the conveniences humanity have that interests him.
It's why Jake's irresponsible treatment of him is what roots love in him. As an animal, he isn't treated with the distant respect reserved or with intrusive groping attention: Cheesy, but Jake treats him as if he were a person. In the period where he is being nursed to health, Jake gets him a personal plate, lets him claim the couch, watch TV, and above all, talk to him. Talk and talk and talk. As isolation is getting to Jake, Dirk, in turn, is starting to get overtly used to having company.
Dirk is not a wedlocked bride: Rather, he’s the one who’s gonna try to chain Jake down with him for a very selfish desire. A 180 flip in roles and goals of a Selkie. He is a wild, lonely, lonely animal who’s gonna drown Jake with him unwittingly in attempt for him to stay (steal Jake’s coat, if you will), and Jake is an idiot who’s active enabling and lack of discretion is gonna endanger himself.
It's a small paradigm of their original life and dynamics: Dirk is a loner who only interacts with humanity through things they have (the net, the utilities, etc), and Jake is a source he becomes codependent with.
