THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Whips, family seals, clan battles, poison, silk, modern weaponry, skepticism, fur collars, bandits, scheming, genius daughters, despicable cousins, swords, red beans, braids, deserts, and drinking to forget.
HOT TAKE: This show was fantastic! I love a main protagonist who is a capable, knowledgable woman in a time when being such is considered a bother--even more so when she is supported by more than half of the men who find themselves in her presence.
This was a great role for Song Wei Long, as he got to be a broody, formidable military powerhouse, but somehow also didn't struggle to smile and laugh when the mood called for it. Yes, he did have a traumatic family history that gave him pause, but he dealt with it in a really adult way that made sense to the story and to his interactions with everyone around him.
Oh oh! Really good kissing in this show! Also, steamy flirting, consensual premarital sex, honest conversations about birth control, rational pregnancy planning, parental responsibilities, and not being ashamed of the decisions you made for love.
The one thing I could have done without was the over-the-top stubbornness of Xuan Qing Kou and the stiffness of Shao Qi Min. Despite being part of the core crew of characters, they needed the most work in making me care at all about them.
Am I a Song Wei Long stan now? This is the 3rd show I've watched with him in it so...maybe?
