Pokemon Card of the Day #2302: Yanmega BREAK (Steam Siege)
Yanmega BREAK was simply an upgrade to the Yanmega in the same set. It provided extra HP and an attack that actually did something to Pokemon not using Tools. The price of using it was having was what was functionally a Stage 2 that couldn’t use Rare Candy. This was rather annoying, but the extra uses were potentially worth it if you were already using the Stage 1 anyway.
140 HP was a nice boost to Yanmega’s bulk, and those common attacks that just barely broke through the normal Yanmega fell a little short here. That being said, any prior damage could change that, so there wasn’t a ton of wiggle room here. The other stats came from Yanmega, which meant a Lightning Weakness, Fighting Resistance, and being able to retreat for free. The positives and negatives weren’t any different than that card.
Barrier Break provided some solid damage if your opponent was avoiding Pokemon Tools. 100 damage for 3 Colorless Energy was actually a bit lower than the good attackers at the time, but remember that Yanmega BREAK attacked for free if you had 4 cards in your hand. The attack was also unaffected by Weakness, Resistance, or other effects on the opponent’s Active Pokemon. This usually didn’t matter much, though it got really annoying against something like Greninja, which had the Grass Weakness and could avoid a KO against Yanmega and its BREAK by simply not using a Pokemon Tool.
Yanmega BREAK brought a bit of a way out against an opponent avoiding Pokemon Tools, which was a typical play if Yanmega was on the field. Barrier Break had decent enough power, but wasn’t spectacular, and this still tended to be worse than the likes of Vespiquen and Golisopod-GX when it came to reaching those higher levels of damage. If you could manage to manipulate your hand correctly, Yanmega and its BREAK were still reasonably good, though the other low-Energy Grass-types did mean that they weren’t a common sight.
