So… that’s not what genocide is. But what makes me upset about it is the fact it’s literally just copied from undertale without pedodev understanding what it means 🥹

genocide isn’t just “killing a lot of people”

undertale’s genocide ending is genocide because you, a human, a being with objective systematic and physical power over monsters, enters the underground, the “home” which they were trapped inside of, and begins slaughtering their race. You don’t just kill in self defense with genocide, you sit in areas for hours and hours looking for and hunting down each and every creature until every single person is ground into dust. And you do it over and over in town after town after city until every soul you can reach is found and ripped apart. Not only that, but undertale itself is a commentary on violence, as contrast to yandere sim that was originally meant to play off the violence for laughs (not that yandere sim is bad for this, just that the two games have different themes). Undertale’s genocide is a commentary on genocide. You can never go back.

Regardless, Ayano’s violent acts are not genocide, and I would’ve preferred some other term like “annihilation” or “massacre” or something. Genocide is the act of killing or terrorizing a particular ethnic/racial group or religion; it is an act of war. What Ayano does is murder everyone in her school. What Ayano is doing is a massacre. Ayano’s killings do not have a racial or religious supremacy/discrimination as a motive. Genocide is also structural (as in, the state facilitates it) with the intention to make the victim’s lives worse overall, ie the Jewish ghettos, or in undertale’s case, the underground. And it is a product of war.

Let's be so honest Yandev never knew what he was doing. His vision for the game started with "yakuza but with upskirt" and has barely progressed beyond that. Not that he has the creativity or game design knowledge to rip off yakuza correctly in the first place.

Obviously I do agree there is some good to be scraped off the slop we have right now, but I think a lot of the "potential" people talk about was always doomed to crash and burn. It's a game made by 4channers as a joke that was funny on 2014 4chan to appeal to people who only socialize on /a/anime&manga, so anything that sounds like a fresh idea on paper immediately becomes stale and reheated once it's put into play.

Every rival is a trope that's never subverted. The love interest is the timlessly mocked flavorless audience self insert. The gameplay is at best stolen from better stealth games, and at worst newgrounds stick figure game tier hack&slash. Ayano chasing love to fill the void of a serotonin deficiency sounds fun! Too bad it was only retconned into the lore after it became a trope in like every popular horror anime. Even the uniquely bad things like pantyshots as currency are things yandev has only ever defended with "but look at all these other games that do it". You can do this for every aspect of the game no matter how far you zoom in or out on it.

Every individual thing it does COULD be done "correctly" if it was made by someone who wasn't so defensive of those tropes, maybe. It strikes such a weird balance between being over the top with its tropiness, and taking itself deadfaced seriously, that you go in thinking "what a good setup" and waiting for a punchline that will never actually come. The reality is that yandere simulator just fundamentally is not a game with any interest in being creative or unique, it's just a pile of things the dev likes stuck together with elmer's glue and dreams. You kind of have to decontextualize and then make shit up about any individual aspect you take inspiration from.
