I Spent a Month Comparing AI Girlfriend Apps. SweetDream Won.
So I went down the rabbit hole. After hearing endless chatter about candy.ai and a few other names, I decided to actually test the popular AI girlfriend platforms side by side instead of taking anyone's word for it. Most of them do one thing well and then fall apart somewhere else. SweetDream, over at sweetdream.ai, was the rare one that held up across the board.
What sold me first was the character creation. A lot of apps give you a slider for hair color and call it customization. SweetDream lets you actually build someone, looks, personality, voice, backstory, even the little quirks that make a companion feel like a person rather than a template. That depth changes how the whole thing feels.
Then there's the chat, which is the part everyone gets wrong. SweetDream's conversations are natural and emotionally intelligent, and crucially it remembers context, so you are not reintroducing yourself every session. Add genuinely good photos, voice notes, and the privacy guarantees, and it stops feeling like a gimmick. As an honest review, it is the AI companion I kept coming back to.
Why you (as a 2D artist) should never work with YandereDev aka Alex Mahan—a quick post
Feeds your art to AI!
trying to justify the nonconsensual usage of GenAI (on your art) to a third party and deliberately exaggerates your reaction in a way that WILL be misinterpreted. Lying, in short.
Whatever the fuck this is ig.
Anyways, this is only a few of the things he said about me and how I “overreacted” knowing my art just got fed to AI!! The guts when you are shamelessly asking an artist to lose hundreds of dollar to draw for you 30 illustrations while expecting professional treatment!!
So, even when you’re not planning on working for this guy, drawing for this fandom alone is already big enough of a risk!
Don’t bother to ask why I even talked to a pedo in a first place.

Update: here’s what he sent my friend. I’m just gonna paste the whole message here:
“<:DevShroog:1063460819582595112| Quitting immediately instead of having a conversation is unprofessional and out-of-line.
If she had been professional and simply said, "I'm anti-AI, never do that with my art," I would have apologized.
But, she quit without even being willing to discuss it, which is immature and unprofessional. So, if I describe her behavior, then I won't describe it positively.
If that offends her, then she should have behaved in a more professional manner.
Her fault, not mine.
Yes, AI is a quick and easy way to communicate an idea, such as "turn the character's head this way." That's kind of indisputable.
If she doesn't want me to use AI, I won't use AI. but she can't be immature and unprofessional and over-react and quit immediately instead of having a calm discussion about it.
I do not percieve myself as the "bad guy" of this situation.”
So, before you guys come at me for acting childish and unprofessional knowing my art just got fed to AI by someone I worked for (without getting paid, mind you), I think I’ll let Alex’s own words speak for itself.

@yanderedev
YANDEREDEV IF U DONT MAKE GENDERBEND VERSION ISTG
Maybe not any kind of bias…? But I’m rewriting yandere simulator for funsies and because the game fucking sucks and I’m really torn between “the original premise for the game was that everyone was some dumb anime trope and it was supposed to be funny, but yandev tried to make it more serious and it destroyed the story. I want to make the game funny and have everyone be some anime trope.” And “yandere simulator’s story has a lot of potential and it’s filled with a lot of weird portrayals of Asian people because yandere dev is a weaboo and predator. I want to make the characters more like real Japanese students and give them more accurate uniforms and designs to real japanese kids.” Maybe there’s some kind of balance I can achieve 😭
Oh anon... you have no idea of the Pandora's Box you just opened as someone who was obsessed with YandereSim content/YandereSim rewrites (shoutout to Kubz Scouts, Callimara, and Casserole Comix!) I'm so upset and angry about everything regarding this horrid game and its atrocious developer. I hope the victim has a strong support system and is able to heal from this as well, along with everyone else that had to deal with this evil man.
I do still love the overall messy concept of this whole thing as someone who loves overcomplicated yet neatly wrapped up lore. I feel bad about it, but with very easy tweaks it could have been a fascinating and NOT CREEPY STORY. It could have developed interesting themes and a strong plot. There are people who GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE BEFORE THIS GAME WAS FINISHED. Even the side game was finished before the main game, and I still stand by the fact that Ryoba should have been the real MC because she's actually a yandere and the 1980s was a more interesting setting than the 202X one. I have a sneaking suspicion he likes Ryoba for another reason though.
Okay now to actually answer your ask. I have been torn on this too but I lean more into the preference of having a serious story. That's what makes a game more memorable to me than recreating anime tropes from an ignorant American man's perspective. It would be different if it was a type of anime with heavy Western influences/fusion, because I think anime like that exists. But I would rather have a darker story like this taking place in Japan as long as it's handled well, and I don't trust that man to do that nor do I feel like he would have wanted to do that. I feel like making the story more serious could have been interesting had he bothered to do proper research. This show could have easily taken place in an ACADEMY or COLLEGE but instead he talked about weird loopholes that put teenagers in compromising/dangerous positions. The lazy names, the Mai Waifu character, all of the female character designs, the body pillows... I feel like every decision he's made speaks for itself
Would you recognize this person if you saw them in public?
Yes, I know who this is and I feel confident that I would recognize them
I know who this is but I’m not sure I would recognize them in person
They look familiar but I’m not sure who they are
I have no idea who this is
